Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book followed the story of Katniss Everdeen. She lived in a North America made up of districts. Which district did Katniss and her family live within?

Answer: District 12

Katniss and her cohorts lived in a post-apocalyptic North America called Panem. It was unclear what the extent of the apocalypse had been, but it did not seem to have occurred under a mass nuclear war. Katniss narrated the book in the first person, and explained how there had originally been thirteen districts. District 13 had rebelled against the Capitol and been annihilated.

This uprising and subsequent elimination resulted in the Hunger Games. Katniss described 12 as the poorest district, and she lived in an area of it with the nickname of the Seam.
2. Each year two young citizens from each district were chosen to participate in the Hunger Games contest. What were these chosen ones referred to as?

Answer: Tributes

One male and one female from each district were chosen at random. Beginning at age twelve, each youth had to put their name into a lottery. Each year after that the number of entries required from each person doubled. You could also up the amount of times your name was entered in exchange for life supplies from the Capitol. Katniss herself had been doing that every year in order to keep her family alive.

This year was the first year her twelve year old sister Prim had to enter her own name. Katniss said she had around twenty entries on this particular year, as the food she received from the Capitol had helped them survive after the death of her father.

The Tributes' names were then drawn out from a large container called a reaping ball.
3. Why did Katniss volunteer for this year's Hunger Games?

Answer: To save her sister Prim

Given the severity of the Hunger Games, I could picture no other situation under which a person in District 12 would volunteer except to save a family member. Gale, not her boyfriend at all, may have wanted to volunteer in place of Katniss, had her name been called. But, he could've only volunteered in place of another male.

They were best friends and hunted together, another routine which saved both of their families year after year. They'd both lost their fathers in the same coal mine explosion. Madge, not Maude, was a friend of Katniss' and the daughter of the mayor. Katniss traded strawberries to the mayoral household, as those were a favorite of his. Maggie is a name I made up. Gale had at least three siblings, but I am not sure of all their names.
4. Did the chosen ones get training for the Hunger Games before it started?

Answer: Yes

Yes, the twenty-four contestants had three days of training and one final demonstration in private for a council called Gamekeepers. Katniss and Peeta Mellark, the boy from her district, were mentored by a former champion named Haymitch. Haymitch warned them not to show all their strengths to the other contestants.

When Katniss went before the Gamekeepers, they were distracted and bored. So, she used her strongest weapon, the bow and arrow, and shot it right at them all. She did not hurt anyone, but did get their attention.

Then, she left the demonstration without being dismissed. This show of ferocity caused her to get the highest score from the Gamekeepers. She received an 11 out of a possible 12, and Peeta did not do too badly with his own score of eight.
5. Katniss allied with a tiny girl named Rue from another district. Which choice does NOT describe the facts surrounding Rue?

Answer: Rue tried to kill Katniss

Rue was very small and reminded Katniss of her sister Prim. When she first saw Rue, Katniss described her as darker colored than she'd been used to seeing, with tiny features and stature. At one point, Katniss was hiding up in a tree from the Careers and Peeta, when she spotted Rue in a neighboring tree. Rue pointed silently upward, warning Katniss of a deadly wasp nest.

The wasps, like the mockingjays, were hybrid creatures created by the Capitol. She referred to them as 'tracker jackers' and described their stings as extremely hallucinogenic on the mild side and deadly on the strong side.

Her plan was to send the wasps down on the Careers, who were sleeping under her tree. But, she had to be careful not to get stung herself. The attack was successful, but she was also stung three times.

The hallucinations that followed her were awful, but the event led her to retrieving the bow and arrows from Glimmer. The pair joined forces a few days later, after Kat recovered from her stings, and formed a plan to take out the Careers' stores of food.

It worked, but not long afterward the boy from District 1 killed Rue by impaling her with his spear. Katniss killed him immediately afterward, and then stayed with Rue as she lay dying. She held her and sang to her as she passed away. She was rewarded by District 11 for this kindness with a loaf of bread.
6. One night, an announcement came out about a rule change. The new rule was to allow two winners of the games if they both came from the same district.

Answer: True

The two hard and fast rules of the Hunger Games, once they started, were that only one person could win and the contestants were not to eat each other. Katniss was not only surprised, but overjoyed, when she heard this rule change! She knew Peeta was out there somewhere, wounded and in need of her.

She also knew he'd been trying to keep her alive the whole time. When she found Peeta, he had done an amazing job of camouflaging himself with mud and foliage. The wound he'd suffered at the hands of Career Cato was disastrous.

It was a thigh laceration that went down to the bone. Katniss cleaned and sheltered Peeta, and attempted to administer aid. Her efforts were to no avail, and Peeta was on his way to death. Then, another announcement came out inviting the remaining players to a feast.

The feast was an instrument to induce more violence, by luring the players to a central location. In this scenario, the 'feast' would contain packs marked for each remaining player that held something they vitally required. One would just have to survive the meeting to get to their pack. Katniss did survive in time to get medicine to save Peeta, but was wounded badly.
7. Who killed the Career player named Clove?

Answer: Thresh

At the 'feast' to claim the backpacks, Foxface was very smart. She got to the location first, hid inside the huge Cornucopia, and waited for the packs to materialize. When they did, she grabbed hers only and sped off into the forest. Katniss was enraged when she saw this because she couldn't believe she herself had not thought of it. Now, her job to save Peeta was much harder. Finally, she ran up to get her pack, grabbed it, and was attacked by Clove, one of the Careers. Clove was practically enraptured with the idea that she'd be the one to get to kill Katniss.

She did inflict a nasty head wound on her, but just before Clove could make her kill, Thresh came up behind her and lifted her off of Kat. Then, he bashed her head in with a rock. It did not kill Clove immediately, and her district partner Cato witnessed her death a bit later. But, instead of killing Kat, Thresh let her go because she'd allied and helped his district partner Rue.
8. Which player was NOT one of the last three left in the game?

Answer: Thresh

Thresh was killed, then Foxface, and then that left Katniss, Peeta and the Career player Cato. Foxface died right after stealing cheese from Peeta and Kat. It's assumed by Kat that Foxface died after eating a poisonous berry called nightlock. She was able to sneak in and steal their cheese while Kat hunted and Peeta collected edible plants. Peeta had collected the bad berries as well as good plants, but Kat identified the nightlock before either of them had consumed any.
9. Near the end of the book, what did Katniss call the creatures that were chasing Cato in the area by the Cornucopia?

Answer: Muttations

The muttations were not natural. Katniss had never seen one before this time, but she knew they were mutations bred by the Capitol. The people in charge of the games had amazing control over the ecology within the arena. One thing they did early on was set fire to the woods to try and regroup their players, which was an attempt to create battle.

In this case, with only three players left, the group drained water from the area to push their people toward the lake. The Cornucopia was near the lake. Peeta and Kat waited for quite a while, out in the open near the lake. Finally, Cato emerged weaponless, but equipped in some kind of skintight armor.

He was on the run from a beast, so Kat and Peeta ran with him. The muttations were some sort of wolf-human hybrid, huge and able to stand on two feet. Atop the Cornucopia, the three tried to remain out of reach of the beasts. Katniss realized that one was the former Career player Glimmer.
10. Did Katniss and Peeta get married at the end of "The Hunger Games"?

Answer: No

After Cato's death, a merciful death from Katniss, District 12 had its two winners of the 74th Annual Hunger Games. Of course, in true Gamekeeper style, the previous rule change was reversed. It appeared Kat and Peeta would have to fight to the death after all. Only one winner was to be recognized. Well, Peeta would have none of that, so he abandoned his weapon and told Kat to kill him. Kat refused to do so, and came up with a rebellious plan to thwart the Capitol and Gamekeepers alike.

She took out the poisoned berries and offered them to Peeta.

She and Peeta would consume the berries, and leave the people in charge with no winner at all. She was not totally sure it would save either one of them, and was willing to die to make her point. Well, sure enough, the pair was spared and declared co-winners as promised.

Afterward, they were taken away to have their bodies repaired as much as possible. Katniss was transformed completely. She had no remaining evidence of any wounds sustained before or during the games. Peeta had to lose the leg that was injured by the muttations, but was otherwise completely healthy. But, in order to save herself or family from any punishment for her defiance, she had to play up the lovers angle.

She had to pretend that living without Peeta was nothing she could do, and that was what had caused her to attempt suicide with the berries. Her ruse worked, but left Peeta deeply saddened when he realized it had all been an act. He did love her and was hoping she felt the same. Book one ended with their arrival back at home.
