Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of this tale Mowgli leaves the jungle and goes to the village beside the river Waingunga. Upon arrival there a woman steps forward and claims that Mowgli is her long-lost son. By what name is the woman called?

Answer: Messua

Messua had lost her child to a tiger in the past. The village priest stated that "what the jungle has taken the jungle has restored." The fact that he could interpret Mowgli's return as an act of God also went in Mowgli's favour. The other names are animals in Jungle Book.
2. What was the name of Mother Wolf's eldest cub who came to find Mowgli and keep him informed about Shere Khan's whereabouts?

Answer: Gray Brother

Gray Brother and Mowgli grew up together in Mother Wolf's den and they are very close. Throughout the tale it is Gray Brother who keeps Mowgli informed about where Shere Khan is and what he is doing. Akela and Raksha are members of the wolf clan that Mowgli grew up in.
3. The village, on the banks of the river Waingunga where Mowgli lives, has a hunter. What is the name of the hunter?

Answer: Buldeo

Buldeo is a pompous figure with his Tower musket and his exaggerations about the jungle and his hunting skills. Buldeo gets his comeuppance later in the story. Machua Appa, Petersen and Toomai appear in another Kipling story called 'Toomai of the Elephants'.
4. The village hunter believed Shere Khan was a "ghost tiger". He stated that the tiger was possessed by Purun Dass. Who was Purun Dass?

Answer: A moneylender

Purun Dass had limped from a blow he had received during a riot in the past. Buldeo said this meant that because Shere Khan also limped then Purun had inhabited the tiger, as a ghost, and had kept his limp.
5. Shere Khan, because of his infirmity, tended to kill the livestock of the local communities as well as attacking any humans he saw. The local government, accordingly, placed a bounty on Shere Khan's pelt. How much is the tiger's fur worth?

Answer: 100 rupees

Buldeo, upon seeing that Mowgli had killed Shere Tiger and was skinning him, tried to take the pelt off Mowgli so that he could get the bounty. Mowgli set Akela on to him and he quickly acquiesced.
6. After confronting the village hunter about his spurious stories, Mowgli is told to take the buffalo herd out. Mowgli rides the herd bull when he leads out the herd. What is the name of the herd bull?

Answer: Rama

Mowgli preferred to be out near the jungle and not stuck in the village listening to lies and grandious fabrications from Buldeo. Also the village elders did not trust Mowgli and wished him to be away from the village.
7. During the argument over the tiger pelt, the name of the city where the pelt was to be taken was stated. To which town is Shere Khan's pelt to be taken?

Answer: Khanhiwara

In an attempt to get the pelt for himself the hunter castigates Mowgli for stampeding the herd and tells him that he will collect the bounty and give Mowgli one Rupee. Considering the pelt was worth 100 rupees and that it was Mowgli who killed the tiger the hunter in my local parlance "is pulling a swifty".
8. Before the final confrontation between Mowgli and Shere Khan, Mowgli is informed that one of the tiger's allies has been ambushed and killed. Who has been killed?

Answer: Tabaqui the Jackal

Gray Brother ambushed the Jackal so that he could not help Shere Khan in killing Mowgli. Sly Tabaqui had been helping the tiger in planning the death of Mowgli. He was also the one animal that the wolves feared the most.
9. On hearing that Shere Khan is in the vicinity Mowgli puts his plan into action. He asks an old friend to help him split the buffalo herd into two groups. Which old friend helped him in this task?

Answer: Akela the Wolf

To block off the ravine where Shere Khan was sleeping Mowgli had Akela and Gray Brother split the herd into groups of bulls and mothers and their calves. One group was sent to one end of the ravine while Mowgli drove the other group, the bulls, to the other end trapping Shere Khan between the two groups.
10. Mother Wolf's eldest cub was worried that Mowgli would forget something. What was it that he was afraid that Mowgli might forget?

Answer: That he is a wolf

Gray Brother was sad to see Mowgli go to the village and was fearful that he would forget his wolf upbringing. Mowgli assured him that he would always love his brothers and he would remember their cave.
