Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What conflict are the characters involved in?

Answer: The French and Indian War

What we now refer to as "The French and Indian War" was but one theater on a nearly global war between France and Great Britain.
2. How does Hawk-Eye habitually refer to his Huron Indian enemies?

Answer: All of these

One of the interesting things about Cooper's writing style is his habit of having the characters use varied and colorful vernacular. The term "Mingo" was a derogatory term usually reserved for members of the Iroquois nation. Hawk-Eye, however, freely applies it to Hurons as well.
3. When Hawk-Eye says something like "Kill-Deer will end the question!" To who or what is he referring when he says "Kill-Deer?"

Answer: His Rifle

Hawk-Eye is very proud of his fine rifle and frequently speaks of its merits.
4. Why are Hawk-Eye and his friends forced to choose whether to flee or surrender when they are cornered at the waterfall hideout?

Answer: They are out of powder

Hawk-Eye and his Mohican friends are not overly concerned that they are outnumbered until their powder supply runs out and their reserve supply is stolen by an enemy.
5. Who is Hawk-Eye's lifelong friend and Uncas' father?

Answer: Chingachgook

Chingachgook and Hawk-Eye are both older men. Uncas is young and eager. Both older men frequently act as mentors and teachers to the young Uncas.
6. After the Fall of the fort at William Henry, the treacherous attack by the Indians, and the kidnapping of Cora and Alice, who sets out to track down and free the girls?

Answer: Hawk-Eye, Duncan, Munro, Chingachgook, Uncas

The old and tired Munro accompanies the party, but participates very little.
7. What is Magua's French appellation?

Answer: Le Renard Subtil

Magua - The Subtle (or wily) Fox
Chingachgook - The Great Serpent
Uncas - The agile deer (or swift elk, or swift deer)
Hawk-Eye - The Long Carbine (or rifle)
8. Does Hawk-Eye like his "Le Longue Carabine" moniker?

Answer: Not at all, he objects to the words used

Hawk-Eye objects to the name several times. He is even reluctant to answer to it on one occasion until explaining at length that his long rifle is a superior weapon and should not be compared with an inferior French trade "Carabine".
9. What happens to Cora at the end of the tale?

Answer: She is killed by an unnamed Huron

Duncan is in love with the younger Alice and he eventually takes her out of the woods and makes her happy. Magua cannot bring himself to kill Cora in the end. One of Magua's companions kills Cora in the confusion of Hawk-Eye's pursuit. Hawk-Eye has no romantic designs on either of the girls.
10. Who ends up being the "Last of the Mohicans?"

Answer: Chingachgook

With Uncas killed by Magua, Chingachgook becomes the last surviving member of his tribe.
