Question 1 of 15
1. In the book's introduction we learn how the Thiefmaker of Camorr picked up the orphan Locke on the streets and started to teach him the skills needed to be a successful thief. But he soon found himself with a big problem on his hands, and, in an attempt to make a small profit from the situation, sold him to Father Chains, the Eyeless Priest. Which of these did the Thiefmaker claim was the main problem with young Locke Lamora? Hint

Question 2 of 15
2. One of the major plots of the book revolves around how Locke's gang, the Gentlemen Bastards, attempt to swindle a Camorri nobleman out of his fortune. This requires quite a bit of skill from Locke, who masquerades as a foreigner (down to a perfect accent and mannerisms, not to mention unseasonably warm clothes) and play on every emotional string Don Salvara possess, from greed to revenge to his sense of nobility. What role does Locke assume for the part? Hint

Question 3 of 15
3. Father Chains and Locke are both priests in a secret priesthood, to a god most of the world does not even know about. This Thirteenth god is nameless, but by what name do his adherents usually call him? Hint

Question 4 of 15
4. At the market known as the Floating Revel in Camorr, Locke and the Salvaras witness the unique gladiatorial game called the Teeth Show. In it, female gladiators balancing on tiny wooden platforms fight against a type of fish that is famous for jumping at its prey. Ten feet long, heavier muscled than bulls and with multi-colored hide hard as tree bark, what are these monstrous fish called? Hint

Question 5 of 15
5. When the Gentlemen Bastards come to pay respect (and their weekly dues) to crime boss capa Barsavi, he has locked himself in his headquarters, the Floating Grave, in fear of assassination by his greatest rival and enemy, the Grey King. Barsavi's bodyguards, the Berangias sisters, and his torturer, Sage Kindness, make a messy business out of three suspected traitors as Locke watches. But the Gentlemen Bastards soon have other worries on their hands, as Barsavi makes a special request. What does he ask? Hint

Question 6 of 15
6. On his way home from a visit with the Salvaras, Locke is abducted by the Grey King, and given an ultimatum. He is to play the Grey King in a meeting with Capa Barsavi, where the war between the crime bosses will be settled. The King claims he has pressing matters elsewhere, and needs someone else to take his place for one night. What does he promise Locke in return for one virtuoso acting performance? Hint

Question 7 of 15
7. In an interlude, we get the story of how Jean Tannen came to learn combat in the House of Glass Roses, the finest school in Camorr, under the tutelage of don Maranzalla. However, the don trained Jean a little differently than his other, more noble, students. What did don Maranzalla say Jean was to learn, that differed from how the others trained? Hint

Question 8 of 15
8. Locke has no choice but to play the part of the Grey King and go through with the meeting with capa Barsavi. During this meeting, he is ensured that he will have the protection of the King's Bondsmage, the Falconer, that he can not be cut or pierced by weapons, and that anyone touching him will die. Does the Falconer really give him this magical protection and keep Locke safe for the entire meeting?

Question 9 of 15
9. After their near-disastrous meeting with Capa Barsavi, Jean, Locke and Bug return home, only to find the place wrecked and ransacked. Things quickly go from bad to worse as a magical trap incapacitates Jean and an assassin steps out from the shadows with a crossbow! How many of the Gentlemen Bastards falls to this killer before Locke knocks him unconscious? Hint

Question 10 of 15
10. When Jean and Locke recover from the attack on their headquarters, they find themselves homeless and almost completely penniless. In order to appear more respectable and squeeze some funds out of the Salvaras, Locke needs better clothes. He goes to the counting house of Meraggio and pulls off an elaborate scheme to get his hands on finer attire, but whose clothes does he eventually end up with? Hint

Question 11 of 15
11. Disguised as Lukas Ferwight, Locke is pressured by the Salvaras into attending the Day of Change party thrown by Duke Nicovante at Raven's Reach tower. Once again, matters take a turn for the worse when he discovers he is in a room with the Duke's Spider, head of the secret police, who has just revealed that she knows who he is!

After quickly incapacitating her, Locke is in a room six hundred feet above ground, with no chance of simply walking out unnoticed. What dangerous maneuver does he make use of to get away?
Hint

Question 12 of 15
12. The long-standing rule of the Bondsmagi of Karthain was that if anyone kills a Bondsmage, ALL the other magi would come after the killer. They would kill him, his family, his friends and destroy everything he worked for in his life.

Locke and Jean managed to overcome and subdue the Falconer by killing the scorpion-hawk he was magically connected to - and it sure helped that the Falconer's spell failed because he mistakenly believed that "Locke" was our friend's real name! But do Jean and Locke kill him afterward?
Hint

Question 13 of 15
13. Under torture, the Falconer details the Grey King's horrid plan - he plans to destroy the minds of the nobility of Camorr, using alchemical traps filled with Wraithstone to Gentle every single man, woman and child in Raven's Reach! Locke rushes back to the tower, and with his recent exposure as a criminal, it is now easy to get dragged before the Duke's Spider and explain what is going on. Who is the person at hand that proves to be invaluable in disarming the traps, with his/her hobby of alchemy? Hint

Question 14 of 15
14. In the Floating Grave, Locke seeks out the Grey King for their final showdown. But while they duel with both rapiers and daggers, it becomes clear that the Grey King has far superior skills with a sword, and he injures Locke several times before Locke unveils his final trick. What clever plan does Locke use to finally overcome the Grey King in the fight? Hint

Question 15 of 15
15. For the deaths of his friends, Locke promised them a death-offering of blood and gold and fire, one that will overshadow any such offering made in Camorr and make the gods take notice.

In the end, do the shades of his dead friends get this offering?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: He stole too much

Locke was indeed very skilled, but the Thiefmaker never saw this as a problem, nor investigated into who could have taught the boy. But it was a major problem that Locke not only enjoyed stealing, but was so hungry for it that he never passed up a chance to show off his skill to the others, regardless of the consequences.

When the Elderglass Vine tavern got burned down after one of Locke's escapades, the Thiefmaker started to suspect the boy to be more trouble than he was worth.

Answer: A Vadran master merchant

Locke even goes so far as to pose in a different role, that of a member of the secret police, and expose himself as a fraud! When the Salvaras are truly convinced they will be doing the Duke a patriotic favour, and that their money will be reimbursed, it is easy to make them keep paying. And as they do not expect to see any viable results from their expenses, Locke and his crew do not have to produce any.

The story of how the Gentlemen Bastards acquired the cask of 502 vintage brandy that perfected the image of a Vadran liquor merchant is just hinted at in this book, but will be covered in full in the novella collection "The Bastards and the Knives".
3. Father Chains and Locke are both priests in a secret priesthood, to a god most of the world does not even know about. This Thirteenth god is nameless, but by what name do his adherents usually call him?

Answer: Crooked Warden

Followers of the Crooked Warden are allowed by the other gods to commit their crimes in peace, even when they go so far as masquerading as priests of other deities. This is taken as a sign that someone really is watching over the thieves, and staying the wrath of the other gods.

Other names for the Crooked Warden are the Benefactor, the Thiefwatcher and Father of Necessary Pretexts.

Answer: Wolf sharks

Devilfish, salt devils and death lanterns are other creatures living in the Therin world, all of whom are extremely dangerous to encounter.

Scott Lynch once stated in an interview that "I'm afraid that there just isn't much happy, cuddly, friendly wildlife in Locke's world. It's all out to kill us."

Answer: He wants Locke to marry his daughter

Barsavi knows that he might be assassinated any time, and does not feel his sons have the necessary skills to successfully run his empire. So he wants Locke to be in a position where they will have to listen to his advice. But while Locke and Nazca are good friends, neither of them think of the other as a potential spouse!

The woman Locke really desires, Sabetha, never appears in the novel, all we know about her comes from dialogue between the other characters.

Answer: His silence about Locke's con-artist schemes

Somehow, the Grey King has found out that Locke and his gang have secretly been conning thousands of crowns out of the nobility for years, and that none of this have found its way to capa Barsavi. As far as the Camorr underworld knows, the Gentlemen Bastards are a small, insignificant gang of common burglars. Needless to say, the capa would not be pleased if he were to learn the truth!

Answer: To kill men with a sword

The other students were there to learn fencing, with its sporting limitations and rules of conduct. Jean would learn how to win a serious fight in the streets, when his life would be at stake and there would not be any rules.

As we see later, Jean never became more than a fair swordsman, but he proved more than lethal with his favourite weapons, a matched pair of hatchets.

Answer: No

The Bondsmage cuts off all contact with Locke at the crucial moment, and Barsavi, thinking Locke is the Grey King, has him beaten up before attempting to drown him. Luckily, Jean and Bug were in the exact right place at the right time!

This was a clever double play by the Grey King; not only does he eliminate the Thorn of Camorr, but he also tricks capa Barsavi into lowering his defenses and setting himself up for an assassination attempt.

Answer: One; Bug

Calo and Galdo were already dead, but as we find out later the Berangias sisters had done this deed. "Twins done in by twins, same wounds to the throat, same pose on the floor. Seemed appropriate".

The assassin who stayed behind only gets off his one crossbow bolt, but it is enough. Bug is hit in the throat and only lives long enough to hear Locke proclaim him to be a full Gentleman Bastard, and never just an apprentice.

Answer: Giancana Meraggio, the master of the house

Locke does get Benjavier's uniform for a while, but only until he can reach Meraggio and start the second part of his plan, which is to convince Meraggio to give Locke some of his clothes.

In this sequence, we really get to see how good Locke is at fast thinking and improvising plans!

Answer: Jumping from a ledge onto a descending elevator-cage

The Gentlemen Bastards had on a previous occasion used poison to make Locke ill, to get out of the meeting between Capa Barsavi and the Grey King. As part of the same plan, they climbed down the vines of the Broken Tower to get out of their rooms unnoticed.

The trick of smuggling in equipment to rappel down a tower was used in the sequel, "Red Sails Under Red Skies".

Answer: No, but they prevent him from ever doing magic again

The Falconer's fate is pretty grim, for a sorcerer! The Gentlemen Bastards cut off all of his fingers in succession, cauterizing the wounds so he will not bleed to death, and complete it by removing his tongue. Without fingers or tongue, he will never be able to cast spells again, but he will be alive.

In the sequel, "Red Sails under Red Skies" Locke and Jean find out that even though they did not break the law of the Bondsmagi, the Falconer's friends are not going to forget easily...

Answer: Doņa Sofia Salvara

Doņa Sofia had studied alchemy to use on her gardens, and knows that the safest guard against Wraithstone smoke is water. The four traps are dumped into the cistern in the topmost garden at the last minute, and even if the alchemical fuses go off, the Wraithstone smoke can not rise.

On Scott Lynch's webpage, he tells that alchemy in the Therin World is in fact not simple chemistry, but also a form of magical process, one that the Bondsmagi don't regulate.

Answer: He tells a well-timed bluff, and distracts the Grey King just long enough

In the past, the young Gentlemen Bastards had gotten some fame for utilizing a strategy in a fight, where Locke simply distracted and held onto the leader of a rival gang until Jean Tannen could get to them. The Grey King knows of this, and so is bluffed when Locke tells him "I just have to keep you here until Jean shows up!". Jean had been too hurt by the Berengias sisters to come, but the distraction is enough for Locke to get the Grey King's own dagger and use it against him, one stab for each of his dead brothers.
15. For the deaths of his friends, Locke promised them a death-offering of blood and gold and fire, one that will overshadow any such offering made in Camorr and make the gods take notice. In the end, do the shades of his dead friends get this offering?

Answer: Yes

All the money the Grey King had stolen, both from the Gentlemen Bastards and Capa Barsavi, were hidden on board his ship, the "Satisfaction". Instead of stealing it back when he easily could have, Locke convinces the authorities to burn and sink the ship in three hundred feet of shark-infested waters, where it will be impossible to reclaim.
