Question 1 of 10
1. "Elantris" is the story of a race of fallen gods. Elantrians had once been all-powerful beings who could work magic, were beautiful to look upon, and were benevolent to the mortal humans who came to them for healing and other boons. The most incredible thing about Elantrians is that anyone who lived in the land of Arelon could become one -- it was known as the Blessing of Elantris. What was this transformation called? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Ten years before the opening of the novel, Elantris fell from grace with a cataclysm called the Reod. What caused it was unknown, but it arrived with a storm so terrible that it cracked the earth itself, leaving a vast chasm in the lands to the south of the Elantrian city. After the Reod, there were no more Shaod transformations.

Question 3 of 10
3. The basis for Elantrian magic was something called the Aon, which was also the basis for the Elantrian written language. These were drawn symbols that could be as simple as a single element (Ehe = fire), or in intricate combinations to create complex magic like healing. When performing magic, how were these symbols drawn? Hint

4. What was the source of Elantrian magic? Hint

Question 5 of 10

Question 6 of 10
6. Whatever broke the ability of Elantrian magic to work, some aspects of it still exist. One of these are the creatures known as Seons. These are mystical floating balls of living light. Question 7 of 10
7. The followers of Holy Jaddeth, leader of the Fjordell empire, have come to Arelon to convert the populace to Shu-Dereth. What Hrathen, the gyorn (priest) sent to bring this about, does not know is that an alternate plan to wipe out the people of Arelon has also been made. The demon-like creatures that begin to carry this out are trained where? Hint

Question 8 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: The Shaod

Also known as 'The Transformation,' the Shaod would totally alter a person's existence. Once a normal human with everyday problems, one who had experienced the Shaod would become an Elantrian, live in the city of Elantris, and "live in bliss, rule in wisdom, and be worshiped for eternity."

Answer: False

The Reod brought about a terrible transformation of all Elantrians. They changed from luminous beings into creatures of horror, looking like walking corpses. Most terrifying of all, the Shaod continued, transforming random people into these nightmarish creatures.
3. The basis for Elantrian magic was something called the Aon, which was also the basis for the Elantrian written language. These were drawn symbols that could be as simple as a single element (Ehe = fire), or in intricate combinations to create complex magic like healing. When performing magic, how were these symbols drawn?

Answer: With their fingers

Elantrians could draw on objects, infusing them with magic, or directly into the air, leaving a bright light in the path the finger travelled as though writing on a surface of some kind.
4. What was the source of Elantrian magic?

Answer: AonDor

Elantrians drew power from AonDor, a vast source of power that can only be tapped by properly forming Aons -- the more complex or powerful the need or use of AonDor, the more complex the crafting of Aons was required. While it might have been possible to create something from nothing, the power and skill required to do so would have been enormous.
5. All of the pathetic creatures that would once have been known as gods are now locked within the city of Elantris, cut off from the rest of humanity. They have no heartbeat, yet still have a form of life where they can talk and move like normal people. Can they feel anything?

Answer: Yes

The current Elantrians live in a constant state of pain. Even the slightest hurt - as simple as a toe-stub - would never stop hurting. Eventually, this drives them mad, and those that have succumbed live in their own worlds of pain, uncommunicative to the world around them. These are called the Hoed.
6. Whatever broke the ability of Elantrian magic to work, some aspects of it still exist. One of these are the creatures known as Seons. These are mystical floating balls of living light. They are formed around a glowing Aon in their centre, from which they get their light. Which of these is not true of Seons?

Answer: They cannot die

Seons are sentient, autonomous creatures that have chosen to give themselves in service to mankind. They can communicate with other Seons, whatever the distance. There are two ways that Seons can die: if the human they are linked with is taken by the Shaod (post Reod), or if they are released from service (and not taken on by anyone else) - their power slowly fades away.

Answer: Dakhor Monastery

The most rabid adherents of Shu-Dereth are sent to the Dahkor Monastery to learn to be assassins, and to be transformed into creatures of darkness and magic.
8. The magic of Shu-Dereth is inscribed on bones beneath the skin of the demon-like beings, and they begin to glow as they chant. How many of them are needed to instantaneously transport from the city of Arelon to the island country of Teod?

Answer: 1

As a dark magic, a sacrifice is required to effect something as powerful as instantaneous transportation over such a great distance. Fifty people are teleported, but the one monk at the center of the circle loses his life to make it happen. The Dakhor take Princess Sarene, Hrathen, and the monk Dilaf to Teod in an effort to complete their mission and subjugate the remaining lands free of the Shu-Dereth religion.
9. In every Elantrian use of magic, an initial Aon must be drawn that represents the link of the magic with the land of Arelon. The Aon as described in the book is "with a line at the top to represent the coast, a line down the side that looks like the Atad Mountains, and a dot in the middle to be Lake Alonoe." What is missing from this representation that came with the Reod?

Answer: Chasm

When Prince Raoden makes this realization in the story, he is suddenly able to draw on the power of AonDor. The full magic of Elantris is not restored yet, at this juncture, but the first step to restoring Elantris is taken.
10. Prince Raoden manages to restore the magic of Elantris by redrawing Aon Rao (the Spirit of Elantris) in the ground, now able to be made complete with the realization of what had been missing. What is Aon Rao a physical representation of?

Answer: Elantris and its four surrounding cities

One square, four circles, and now also the chasm line. A representation of the city complex: Elantris and its four surrounding cities (Kae is the only one of the four still inhabited).
