Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Grasshopper dies of starvation; neighbor Ant lives through winter.

Answer: Be prepared for when hard times come

"The Ant and the Grasshopper", one of Aesop's fables, promotes the idea of working when times are not hard and saving for adverse times. The grasshopper laughed at the hard-working ant, but the ant got the last laugh.
2. Creditor shows mercy, but when his debtor imprisons another servant, changes his mind.

Answer: Forgive others so we can be forgiven

This parable is found in the New Testament. Jesus Christ used this story to teach why it is important to forgive. Originally, the creditor forgave a huge debt. But when the man he forgave demanded payment from another servant and would not forgive the much smaller debt, the creditor imprisoned the debtor for not being merciful.
3. Four Oxen bicker; Lion eats them one by one.

Answer: United we stand, divided we fall

"The Four Oxen and the Lion" is another of Aesop's fables. At first, the oxen were able to protect themselves when they worked together by forming a circle with their horns out. But when they had a disagreement and didn't work together, the lion was able to overtake them.
4. Man whips Donkey for dancing on roof, trying to imitate Monkey.

Answer: What is right for one may not be right for another

Another Aesop fable told of "The Monkey and the Donkey". A man saw a monkey dance on the roof and laughed. The donkey also wanted to make the man laugh, so he tried to do the same thing, with disastrous results.
5. Wolf kills sheep; townspeople blame dishonest shepherd boy.

Answer: No one believes a liar, even when he tells the truth

"The Boy Who Cried Wolf" is a well-known story in which the boy continually lies to the townspeople about a wolf coming to kill the sheep. One day, a wolf actually comes and this time no one believes the boy.
6. Wolf disguised as sheep kills many.

Answer: Don't be deceived by appearances

The old "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" fable has been used by many throughout history to show how outward appearances can often hide the inner truth.
7. Man and son take advice from everyone and end up losing their donkey.

Answer: When you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing no-one

Aesop told of the Man, his Son, and the Donkey, who tried to please everyone by taking their suggestions. Every time someone complained, the man changed, but eventually the two ended up carrying the donkey, and when the donkey heard everyone laughing, he kicked until he fell off and ran away.
8. Jew robbed, beaten on road; taken in by Samaritan.

Answer: Be a good neighbor to everyone

The Parable of the Good Samaritan, as given by Jesus Christ in the New Testament, was given in response to a question about the commandment Jesus had given to "Love thy neighbor". The question was "Who is my neighbor?"
9. Lion lets Mouse go; Mouse returns later to free Lion from trap.

Answer: Small friends can be a big help

Aesop's fable about "The Lion and the Mouse" told of a lion that was about to eat a mouse. The mouse begged for his life saying that maybe someday he could return the favor. The lion didn't think that would ever happen, but let him go anyway. Later, when the lion was caught in a net trap, the mouse saved him by chewing on the ropes.
10. Tortoise beats hare in big race.

Answer: Slow and steady wins the race

The classic fable about "The Tortoise and The Hare" tells of a rabbit who races a turtle and, thinking he has the race won, takes a nap. This allows the turtle to overtake him and win - demonstrating that careful, slow diligence pays off in the end.
