Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lawrence Stratford is murdered in the first 30 pages. How was he killed?

Answer: poison

His nephew, Henry, used the ancient poison found in Ramses' tomb and disguised it in Lawrence's coffee.
"Drink your coffee, Uncle Lawrence. I poured it for you."
2. What is the name of Lawrence Stratford's friend helping him in Egypt?

Answer: Samir

Samir also works at the British Museum, and is a native Egyptian. He is a faithful companion to Lawrence, and later to Ramses.
3. Why does Ramses finally rise from his sarcophagus?

Answer: to save Julie

Henry is attempting to poison Julie in the same way he poisoned her father, Lawrence, and Ramses rises to intercede. His first words are "Come and have a cup of coffee with me, Julie" followed by "Drink your coffee, Uncle Lawrence", to inform Julie that not only did Henry just try to take her life, but also that he had killed her father.
4. Which Egyptian queen did Ramses council, and fall in love with?

Answer: Cleopatra

He is the one who encouraged her to seduce Julius Caesar to try to keep Egypt separate from Rome.
5. After Julie shows Ramses London, where does the group all take off for?

Answer: Egypt

Ramses feels as though to start fresh with Julie, he needs to see Egypt and say goodbye to his demons.
"Julie, this age can never belong to me until I say farewell to Egypt, for Egypt is my past."
6. Julie is engaged to Alex. What are her reasons for ending the engagement?

Answer: all of these

Alex sensed it was coming. He says as much when she ends it.
7. After Cleopatra is brought back, who does she seduce and use to get closer to Julie? She intends to kill Julie to get back at Ramses for not saving her lover, Mark Antony, with the elixir.

Answer: Alex

Although she does "hook up" with Elliott and he helps her get the rest of the elixir and fully heal, she develops real feelings for Alex after meeting him.
She never interacts with Samir, and she doesn't seduce Henry, she kills him.
8. Which opera is everyone attending when the final confrontation begins?

Answer: Aida

Written by Giuseppe Verdi, "Aida" takes place in Egypt, and originally premiered in Cairo in 1871. Nice of Anne Rice to write that into the book.
9. Immortals in this novel are inhumanly strong, and unable to die from normal means. Which supernatural beings are they similar to? [Anne Rice is famous for writing about them]

Answer: vampires

Although Anne Rice does write about other supernatural beings, they are most similar to vampires. I think she may have done that on purpose.
10. Ramses drank an elixir to become immortal. By the end of the book, who else has drunk the elixir?

Answer: all of these

Cleopatra drinks it after Ramses brings her back from the dead by rubbing it on her, but she is not fully healed until she ingests it. Ramses gives Elliott and Julie the choice to drink it, and they both opt to.
