1. A goddess who has had favor with Odysseus since he fought in the Trojan War. She continues to help him to return home.

Answer: Who is Athena?

Athena is the goddess of intelligence, so it only makes sense that she would show favoritism to Odysseus, who shows great cunning through the whole book.
2. Creatures whose beautiful sound will draw all men unto them. Odysseus had his men tie him to the boat so he would be secure and not be able to go to them.

Answer: What are the sirens?

Odysseus wanted to hear their beautiful sound so he had his men tie him to the boat. Then he had his men plug their ears.
3. This person is Odysseus' loyal swineherder. When Odysseus first came back home it was this person's hut that he went to.

Answer: Who is Eumaeus?

Eumaeus was always loyal to Odysseus. Athene disguises Odysseus when he first gets back to Ithaca and although Eumaeus doesn't recognize him he still shows great hospitality towards him.
4. This rocky island is the home of Odysseus. He returns there after many years of being away.

Answer: What is Ithaca?

We know Ithaca is a rocky island because Menelaus offers Telemachus many gifts, including horses, but Telemachus tells him that Ithaca is a rocky place that only goats could live on.
5. This man became very drunk and met a very tragic end when he fell off Circe's roof.

Answer: Who is Elpenor?

While Odysseus and his men are in Hades they meet up with Elpenor who tells them that he would really appreciate a proper burial, so in book 12 you find them burying him.
6. This girl found Odysseus by the river. Athene gave her strength not to be scared. She eventually took him to her father the king.

Answer: Who is Nausicaa?

Nausicaa was on the search for a husband and in the end she wanted to marry Odysseus.
7. This man is the first of all the suitors that Odysseus destroys.

Answer: Who is Antinous?

During the whole competition all the suitors think that Odysseus is just some beggar. Then he just rips his rags off and kills Antinous with the bow and arrow that was supposed to be used for the competition. The other suitors become outraged so he begins slaughtering all of them.
8. This soothsayer asks Telemachus to help him by giving him a place on his ship.

Answer: Who is Theoclymenus?

After taking him in, Telemachus didn't want to take him to his house because of all the horror going on so he refers him to Eurymachus' house. Then Theoclymenus saw a terrible omen and eventually ended up going to Eumaeus' hut.
9. This is the wife of Odysseus. She is the person that all the evil suitors are trying to court.

Answer: Who is Penelope?

She waited the whole time it took for Odysseus to get home and remained loyal, unlike Clytemnestra who killed Agamemnon when he got home.
10. All throughout the poem there is a pattern story. This is a story within the story that creates anticipation. This pattern story is about a man that came home from the war and was killed by his wife and her lover.

Answer: What is the story of Agamemnon?

The story of Agamemnon is referred to in many of the books, including 2,4, 8, 11, and 24. It lets the reader and the character have an idea of what could happen. Many Greek novels have pattern stories. "The Odyssey" has another smaller pattern story, when Demodocus sang the story of Aphrodite and Ares.
