Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the narrator of the book?

Answer: Ponyboy

Ponyboy Curtis is the main character and narrator of the book. He is youngest of the gang, and feels like he's different from his friends.
2. Where does the book take place?

Answer: Tulsa

The book takes place mostly in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is also where the author grew up and attended school. A few chapters however, are set in Windrixville, in an old church on top of Jay Mountain.
3. Who is Pony's oldest brother?

Answer: Darry

Darrel, called Darry, is his only brother listed in the choices. He is twenty, but Ponyboy described him as looking older then his age. He also says Darrel would be handsome if his eyes weren't so cold, as he calls them two pieces of pale blue-green ice.
4. Who was Soda's girlfriend?

Answer: Sandy

Sandy was the girl who cheated on Soda, and got pregnant with someone else's child. She left him and moved to Florida with her grandmother.
5. What is Johnny's last name?

Answer: Cade

Johnny's parents abuse him. He is like the gang's pet even though Pony is two years younger.
6. What book does Pony read to Johnny in the church?

Answer: Gone with the Wind

Johnny asks for this book in the hospital. He writes a message in it for Ponyboy, who sees it at the end of the book.
7. Who go together to visit Johnny in the hospital?

Answer: Pony and Two-bit

They only got to stay for a short amount of time, because Johnny's mother came to see him. But he didn't want to see her and passed out after yelling at the nurse to tell his mother to leave him alone for once.

Cherry refused to visit him, because he had killed her boyfriend. Pony and Dally visit Johnny after the rumble, and are there when he dies. It never says if the others visit him.
8. Why doesn't Johnny want to bleach his hair?

Answer: He says his skin is too dark

Johnny makes Pony bleach his hair as a disguise from the police. Because Johnny says his own skin is too dark for blond hair, he has Pony cut it for him, then washes the grease out of it.
9. Who visits Pony at his house after Dally and Johnny die?

Answer: Randy

Randy comes by and talks to Pony about the incident in the park, which causes Pony to freak out, saying that he is the one who killed Bob. He also says that Johnny's not dead. Both statements are false, as Johnny is the one who killed Bob, and is now dead.
10. What was the last thing Johnny told Pony?

Answer: "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold."

This is my favorite quote of the book. Johnny explains what it means in the letter he wrote to Ponyboy. He says it means that as a kid everything is new. You're gold as a kid. So as you grow up, things start to dull out, lose importance. Johnny tells Pony to stay gold. To stay the way he is, not to grow up and lose what makes him, him.
