Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the book, Paul and Sophie are in the waiting room with four other potential employees, all of whom seem much better qualified for the job than Paul or Sophie do. Which of these was not one of the other people waiting to be interviewed?

Answer: Mr Perfect

Paul decided that 'Dog Boy' would get the job, simply because he hated him most of all. Sophie thought it would be the Pre-Raphelite girl. In the end, it was Paul and Sophie who ended up working for J.W Wells and Co.
2. What are Paul and Sophie's full names?

Answer: Paul Carpenter, Sophie Pettingell

Sophie Pettingell lives with her parents, and Paul Carpenter lives with his parents. Paul's parents decided to go to Florida one year, and then never came back.
3. The first job Sophie and Paul receive at J.W Wells and Co. is sorting spreadsheets, which later on in the book turn out to be Mortensen Counter readouts. There are Mortensen readouts for every month but one. What month do Mortensen readouts not appear for?

Answer: October

Mortensen Counters analyse the amount of paranormal activity going on world-wide, but the book never tells us why it doesn't operate in October. I suppose even the Mortensen needs a sabbatical now and then.
4. The second job that Julie, the woman who supplies Paul and Sophie with their work, gives them is a series of blank photographs. Paul and Sophie are told that they are to look for deposits of a mineral, and Paul finds out that he has the ability to scry for it. What mineral can Paul scry for?

Answer: Bauxite

Sophie finds out she has telepathic powers at the same time, as Paul and Sophie decide to play 'Spot the Bauxite', their version of 'Battleships'. As Sophie read out co-ordinates, Paul ran his fingers over them, and detected Bauxite.
5. On that fateful Friday night when Sophie and Paul get stuck inside the J.W Wells and Co. building (because they failed to leave the building by 5:30, when the doors are locked), Sophie is attacked by a goblin. The goblin turns out to be the mother of one of the partners of the business, but which partner?

Answer: Dennis Tanner

This Goblin is Rosie Tanner, who turns out to be the gorgeous receptionist Paul sees every morning. She has the ability to morph into an appealing human form, and tries to seduce Paul throughout the book.
6. When Paul finds the Portable Door in the strongroom, and Sophie decides to go to lunch without him, what is the first place Paul visits?

Answer: Venice

While there, he has a cup of coffee and a slice of cake, which he pays for with money that he wished for.
7. When Paul and Sophie's relationship begins to break down, Sophie meets a man called Shaz at a party. His job is a Ceramic Artist, or as Paul likes to call him, a Performance Potter. In the end, Shaz and Sophie break up because they become distant. This turns out to be because Shaz is a goblin. What substance reveals the truth about Shaz to Sophie?

Answer: Imp Reflecting Tinfoil

The foil is stapled to the roof of the bus where Sophie and Shaz live. This turns out to be a ruse by Rosie, Mr. Tanner's mum, to get her hands on Paul.
8. One of the assignments Paul and Sophie are given to complete is to slip a love philtre into the drink of a famous celebrity. This is so he will fall in love with a woman who has paid for the company's services. Who is the famous celebrity that falls hopelessly in love?

Answer: Ashford Clent

Sophie also gets a dose of the love philtre, as Paul failed to tell her that he already laced one of the glasses of champagne with it. As she laced the other glass, she took a sip out of one of the glasses, fell asleep, and as Paul was the first man she saw when she woke up, she fell in love with him.
9. In the book, Paul has a recurring dream where he is stuck in a room with two other clerks, who are both wearing period dress from the Victorian times. It turns out that they were trapped there by Humphrey Wells over 130 years ago, and the only way to get them out of the room was to combines the two halves of the talisman. What are the names of the two clerks stuck in the room?

Answer: Pip and Arthur

Arthur turns out to be Mr. Tanner's dad, husband of Rosie. Incidentally, Rosie is short for Rosencula.
10. In the end, the two halves of the talisman turn out to be a gold chain and the elusive long stapler. The long stapler has moments where it disappears and then turns up in rather random places. Who IS the long stapler, though?

Answer: John Wellington

John Wellington was turned into the long stapler by Humphrey Wells, who wanted him out of the way so he could take over the company. And in case you're interested... Paul gets the girl in the end.
