Answer: Captain Hathaway

Fleeing her abusive uncle, Charlisse bartered passage aboard a merchant ship headed for the Caribbean in the hope of finding her father.
2. Captain Edmund Merrick Hyde has been commissioned by the governor of Jamaica to "set upon by force of arms" all ships owned by the king or citizens of which country?

Answer: Spain

Merrick, an ex-pirate, is a soldier for His Majesty King Charles II. His job - to remove all Spanish vessels and goods from the Caribbean. He is also following his God-given calling of ridding the sea of notorious pirates.
3. Why did Captain Merrick and his crew stop at the island where Charlisse was stranded?

Answer: His ship needed to be careened

Careening a ship takes a couple of days so Merrick wanted to be in an isolated spot. If an enemy happened upon them while their ship was grounded the pirates wouldn't have had much of a chance at fighting back.
4. What is the name of Captain Merrick's quartermaster?

Answer: Sloane

Sloane is more than just a quartermaster, he is also Merrick's good friend. Sloane's respect for Merrick means he will defy his Captain, if need be, to assure his safety.
5. Which notorious pirate is Charlisse's father?

Answer: Edward the Terror

Edward Terrance Bristol was once a respectable merchant sailor. After the love of his life stopped replying to his letters, or came to live with him in the Caribbean, he was so upset that he turned to pirating. He couldn't believe it when he met Charlisse and discovered she was the daughter of Helena Charlotte Bristol, the only woman he had really loved.
Helena's brother had not approved of their marriage and slowly prevented all communication between them, one letter at a time.
6. Charlisse's father is the same man Merrick has been searching for so he can hand him over to the authorities in order to be bought to justice.

Answer: True

Edward Bristol was Merrick's captain when he was younger. After witnessing the atrocities that Edward committed Merrick could stand it no longer. Gathering the crew, Merrick mutinied and became the new captain. After he became a Christian, Merrick was determined to see the wicked man get the punishment he deserved.
7. Captain Merrick is being tried for treason. Who planted the false evidence on his ship?

Answer: Master Kent

Kent is the nephew of Edward the Terror and both of them would love nothing more than to see the great Captain Merrick sent to the gallows.
8. What is the name of the young, red-headed pirate who was sentenced to be hung with Merrick?

Answer: Rusty

Merrick gave the young lad the name 'Rusty' because "his fair skin had been sunburned so many times it remained a hardened, rusty colour..."
After they escape the noose, Merrick makes Rusty his new helmsman and they set off in search of Charlisse.
9. What is Jackson's position on board the 'Redemption' at the beginning of the book?

Answer: Master gunner

Jackson is an ex-slave. With his dark skin and standing a head taller than most he can be quite daunting at times. He is a quiet man who doesn't usually have much to say, but when he does he is worth listening to! He is loyal to his captain at all times. After Master Kent's attempted mutiny, Jackson is promoted to first mate.
10. How does the story end?

Answer: Charlisse and Merrick are together on the same island where Charlisse was stranded

Merrick's father 'rescues' him from the Port Royal court house and they set off to find Charlisse.
Sloane has been looking after Charlisse on the small, uncharted island where Charlisse was stranded at the beginning of the book.
Upon seeing each other Merrick proposes and the answer is a resounding "Yes!"
