Tate had red hair that she kept short. Later on she grew it out, only making Matthew consider her more beautiful. She inherited the color from her mother Marla, as well as her piercing green eyes. Tate also got her name from her mother, who became Marla Beaumont from Marla Tate. Matthew called her Red throughout the entire story.

It was actually Matthew's mother that abandoned him. James Lassiter and his financial backer/partner, Silas VanDyke, were searching the sea for treasure. Before he went in the water, VanDyke sabotaged James' tank, making him intake too much nitrogen. Everyone assumed it was an accident, but Matthew knew better.

Tate nicknamed a barracuda that appeared daily "Smiley." When she first saw the fish she feared it (Matthew mentioned his uncle had been bitten by one), but soon realized it wasn't going to attack. The barracuda showed up while she and Matthew searched for treasure. She noticed another one right before she found Angelique's Curse.

Matthew and Tate found the "Santa Marguerite" while diving and began to bring up different types of treasure. Tate appreciated each artifact and its history while Matthew enjoyed the gold. After Buck was attacked by a shark, VanDyke swooped in and took the site. He also robbed them of every piece of treasure on their boats.

Matthew saved up for years and bought parts here and there. Eventually he created a double-hulled beauty he dubbed "Mermaid." "The Sea Devil" was the name of his old boat he traveled on with Buck; he was forced to sell it. "Adventure" belonged to the Beaumonts and "Triumphant" was VanDyke's. He blew his boat up to fool VanDyke into thinking he had been killed.

VanDyke wasn't the only one obsessed about finding the priceless piece of jewelry. Matthew wanted to find it and use it to lure VanDyke so he could exact his revenge. The storied amulet was worth millions of dollars and was said to come with a curse. It featured a large ruby, gold, and diamonds. The rubies and diamonds symbolized blood and tears.

Angelique Maunoir was essentially accused of witchcraft in 1553. Matthew showed Tate a page from her diary that described her agony over losing her husband Etienne and the curse she placed upon it. Tate found it while diving with Matthew and marveled over its beauty. On it were the names Angelique and Etienne.

Tate didn't want them to find it because Matthew would use it to commit murder. VanDyke wanted to find the amulet himself, not the Lassiters and Beaumonts. Buck was terrified of the curse the amulet carried and didn't want to have anything to do with it. Ray researched extensively and recruited Matthew and Buck to help him find it.

LaRue worked with Matthew for years. He gained Matthew's trust and convinced him to take him along to search for the ship "Isabella." LaRue and Marla went shopping while the others harvested treasure. While Marla shopped, LaRue contacted VanDyke and reported that the "Isabella" had been found.

He had agreed to be a spy for VanDyke. In truth, he and Matthew were true friends and he was fooling VanDyke the entire time.

VanDyke also served lobster for lunch.

When the group discovered the ship "Isabella" they struck it rich. Tate and Matthew finally realized that they were in love, after eight years separated. They decided to get married. One of the gifts Matthew purchased for Tate was a small island for her to build her museum, which she named the "Beaumont- Lassiter Museum of Marine Archaeology." Also, Buck and LaRue bought a boat together and decided to sail off to find more treasure.
