Menolly had run away from home earlier and no searchparty had been sent to look for her. She now lived in a cave, but on this day she had gone looking for food and was surprised by Threadfall just as she had her mouth full of cress. She ran as fast as she could and had almost, but not quite, made it when a dragon swooped down to take her to safety at the Weyr.

13. "The little queen all golden Flew hissing at the sea, To stop each wave Her clutch to save She ventured bravely." The queen in the song is Menolly's Beauty.

Answer: False

Actually the queen is Beauty's mother. Beauty and the others in Menolly's fair came from the clutch she rescued that day.
14. "As she attacked the sea in rage A holderman came nigh Along the sand Fishnet in hand And saw the queen midsky." Who was the "holderman"?

Answer: Menolly

Menolly was out collecting greens for the hold when she caught sight of the agitated firelizards in the queen's fair. She got too close to the edge of the cliff when she wanted a closer look and fell to the beach.
15. "He stared at her in wonder For often he'd been told That such as she Could never be Who hovered there, bright gold." Why would he have thought she couldn't be?

Answer: Nobody had ever seen a firelizard for sure in the north.

The fact that most young boys had set traps for firelizards and nobody had caught one meant that firelizards were considered a myth even though some otherwise creditable people claimed to have seen them in the distance.
16. "He saw her plight and quickly He looked up the cliff he faced And saw a cave Above the wave In which her eggs he placed." Were the eggs really placed in a cave?

The little queen wouldn't let Menolly leave the cove until she had rescued the eggs by placing them in a cave some distance up the cliff.

Menolly later inadvertently impresses a tenth firelizard (bronze Poll).
20. "My nightly craft is winged in white; A ____ of night-dark sea. Swiftborn, dreambound and rudderless; Her captain and crew are me. I sail a hundred sleeping tides Where no seaman's ever been And only my white-winged craft and I Know the marvels we have seen."

I must be free to talk Not choked with grief, clear-minded. My mouth cannot betray The anguish that I know. Yes, I'll keep my tears till later: But my grief will never go." Who had died?

Answer: Petiron

Petiron had been the only on who really understood Menolly, but Mennolly had to sing at his funeral and so she couldn't allow herself to cry 'till afterward.
22. "Don't leave me alone! A cry in the night, Of anguish heart-striking, Of soul-killing fright" Who had left and who didn't want to be left alone?

Piemur almost never buy anything for others, he must really want Menolly to feel at home.
24. "The fickle wind's my foe, With tide his keen ally. They're jealous of my sea's love And rouse her with their lie." Who told Menolly to sing a sea-song at the Gather at Fort?

Answer: Robinton

Robinton wanted the landsmen to know how seamen feel about the sea. He applauded Menolly's choice as the audience had never heard that one before.
25. "Oh sweet sea, oh dear sea, Heed not their stormy wile But bear me safely to my Hold And from their watery trial." Speaking of trial, what did Piemur think of Menolly singing at the Gather?

Answer: Loved it

Piemur wanted to know why she hadn't mentioned the sea-song before and he said that she should always be the one to sing the lizard song.
