Although it is well known that Hiroki Sugimura and Takako Chigusa were extremely close friends, and Hiroki describes Takako as being his best friend, Takako actually says that her best friend is Kahoru. Kahoru went to the same school as Takako, but fortunately for her, she was in a different class. They had been best friends for seven years.

Otaku is a Japanese word which has recently entered the English language, and become more common as anime has become more popular. It basically means a person who is obsessed with anime. In Japan, this is seen as quite a negative thing, but in English it's more neutral, usually just referring to a fan, rather than an obsessive.

Although Mitsuko did have Megumi and Yoshimi's weapons on her, by the time she met Yuichiro and Tadakatsu she was limited on weapons, due to her previous run-ins with other classmates. Yuichiro takes possession of her sickle for a short amount of time, but she takes it back again before she leaves.

In the manga version, Yuichiro and Tadakatsu have opposite weapons to those they actually received, and they swapped when they met up, but this does not happen in the novel. Also, Tadakatsu doesn't give Yuichiro his gun while he is on watch, instead choosing to keep it with him as he slept.

There are a couple of points in the book where characters' blood types are mentioned, and I've noticed that this seems to be quite a common piece of information given about characters in Japanese media, for some reason. When Kazushi Niida asks Takako if she is a virgin, she is annoyed that he asks her in the same way as if he was confirming her blood type, which she then says is B.

Takako held the school record for running the 200m sprint. She was described as being the best sprinter on the girls' team. Takako used to get away with things like innappropriate dress, jewellery, and hairstyles at school because she excelled so much in sport - she was often allowed to get away with breaking the rules.

Yuichiro tried to stop Tadakatsu from shooting Mitsuko by getting in the way of his gunfire. He was shot twice at first, then he was shot a further three times while he was injured, almost as a mercy killing to put him out of his misery.

Tadakatsu was the first person to shoot Yuichiro - albeit accidentally. Mitsuko then killed Tadakatsu, and came back to Yuichiro. She kissed him and hugged him, and then shot him three times in the head. This was the only time we really see Mitsuko being compassionate in the book - Yuichiro actually showed her that he trusted her, and made her feel good about herself, so she shot him quickly when she knew he was in pain.

Takako was shot by Mitsuko Souma, three times in the back, as she ran away. Although Takako kept running, Mitsuko assumed that she would die right away. She didn't count on Takako surviving and telling Hiroki Sugimura that it was Mitsuko who had shot her, and she nearly gets killed by Hiroki later on as a result of this mistake.

Mitsuko Souma shot Takako and left her for dead, but Takako did not die. Hiroki eventually found her half an hour later, and held her in his arms as she died. Takako confessed to Hiroki how she felt about him as he died, and learned that he was in love with Kayoko Kotohiki instead.
