Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following students was Hiroshi Kuronaga shorter than?

Answer: Keita Iijima

We find out from Toshinori Oda, while he was thinking about how much he hated the other boys in his class, that he, Hiroshi, Yutaka, and Yuichiro were the four short boys in the class. Hiroshi's small stature didn't stop him from being friends with the tough crowd.
2. We know that Yuko Sakaki received a small bottle of poison in her bag, but that this wasn't her designated weapon. What was her real weapon?

Answer: Baton

Yuko received a telescoping spring baton in her pack as her designated weapon, and a small bottle of poison as an extra. In the manga version of the story, Yuko is given the poison because the organisors of the program are considering introducing it as a fully-fledged weapon in the coming year.
3. How many people did Yuko kill during the infamous lighthouse scene?

Answer: 1

Yuko accidentally killed Yuka Nakagawa, after she poisoned Shuya's food, and Yuka ate it. She was indirectly responsible for the whole massacre, but during the gunfight she never killed anyone.
4. Hiroshi was a member of Kazuo Kiryama's gang. True or false?

Answer: False

Hiroshi was given the message about meeting the gang at the south peak, and was one of those killed during this meeting, but he was not a full member of Kazuo's gang. Hiroshi sometimes hung out with Kazuo, because he was in awe of his strength and skills, but despite being depicted as a gang member in both the film and the manga, in the novel it is explicitely stated that he was more of a casual friend.
5. What was written on the small bottle of poison Yuko found?

Answer: special bonus

As mentioned above, the bottle of poison was given as a special bonus, and this is what was written on the bottle. Yuko doesn't tell the other girls that she has the poison, which is why nobody realises it was she who poisoned Yuka.
6. Yuko commited suicide by jumping off of the lighthouse after she realised what she had caused to happen. True or false?

Answer: False

Yuko ran to the top of the lighthouse to get away from Shuya Nanahara, who she believed was a murderer. When he reached the top of the lighthouse too, she slipped and fell from the roof in a panic. Shuya caught her and held her, even though he was in great pain, and Yuko realised that Shuya was a good person, and that she had caused the death of her friends because she was scared unnecessarily.

This is when she chooses to commit suicide, and she does it by prying Shuya's hands off of hers.
7. Which weapon was Hiroshi provided with?

Answer: We never find out

Hiroshi and Kazuo's gang members were killed before we got to learn much about them, and we are never told what their supplied weapons were. It can be assumed that the weapons would have been taken by Kazuo if he thought they were good enough, and that the machine gun came from one of the people killed at the rock.
8. Who used to abuse Yuko as a child?

Answer: Her father

Yuko was abused by her alcoholic father when she was young. He was later killed by local Yakuza members. These events caused Yuko to have an extreme fear of anything gory or violent, and she had nightmares about her father long after his death.
9. How was Hiroshi killed?

Answer: Stabbed

Hiroshi was stabbed when he went to meet Kazuo at the south peak of the island, along with Izumi Kanai. This leads us to believe Hiroshi was killed before Kazuo found his machine gun.
10. Whose death did Yuko witness before she arrived at the lighthouse?

Answer: Tatsumichi Oki

Yuko witnessed Shuya and Tatsumichi fighting, and then she saw Tatsumichi dead, and naturally assumed that Shuya had killed him. This is what led her to be so afraid of Shuya when he was brought to the lighthouse. Yukie Utsumi was the one who witnessed Sakura's death.

I apologise for the uneven number of Hiroshi questions, but he is hardly even mentioned in the book, and very little information is given about him. Yuko is an important character, because she triggers the events at the lighthouse, so happily it balanced out enough to make a quiz!
