Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old is Becky at the beginning of the book?

Answer: 16

Becky Winter becomes Adelaide's language tutor, playmate, and friend. She is originally from Razkavia.
2. What is the name of the Razkavian flag?

Answer: Red Eagle

There is a legend which states that as long as the Red Eagle flies over the Rock of Eschtenburg, Razkavia will remain free.
3. What is Sally's full name?

Answer: Sally Goldberg

Sally married Dan Goldberg, socialist and journalist, whom she met in "The Tiger in the Well." He seems okay but I still miss Fred :(
4. Which two countries are fighting (not literally) over Razkavia?

Answer: Germany and Austria-Hungary

They both want the nickel in the mines, or "Devil's Copper" as it is known, because it poisoned the workers who mined it.
5. What is the name of the eldest prince who "died" a long time before the book was set?

Answer: Prince Leopold

He wasn't actually dead, but was hidden away in an asylum. He went mad.
6. Who assassinated the newly-crowned king?

Answer: Carmen Ruiz

She did it to get Prince Leopold, the love of her life, crowned. Seeing as he was a gibbering fool after being shut in a cave for years, this wasn't really a well thought-out plan. Herr Egger was the man who owned the flat that Senora Ruiz shot the king from. I'm assuming you know who Fred (sob!) and Becky are.
7. What profession is Becky's mother?

Answer: An artist

Well, she's listed as an artist in the list of characters but really she's more of an illustrator. She draws pictures of cheap novels and "Penny Dreadfuls" - the kind of thing Jim reads.
8. Which English county is Razkavia frequently compared to in size: "It's hardly bigger than B........"

Answer: Berkshire

According to Becky, there "were dozens of these little kingdoms once but most of them have been gobbled up now."
9. What was the name of Adelaide's kitten?

Answer: Saucepan

Saucepan saved Adelaide's life by munching away at her breakfast one morning. The breakfast had been poisoned and poor Saucepan died, but it meant Adelaide survived.
10. Back in England, what is Adelaide called by the papers?

Answer: The Cockney Queen

After all the action, a newspaper prints an article that implies that Adelaide was just out for what she could get from Razkavia and that she ran off with lots of valuables. Jim said that he was going to write a book to set the record straight. I don't really think people will take him seriously, though.
