Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where and when is the novel set?

Answer: London in November 1849

The novel is set during the time that writer Charles Dickens was active. Dickens is omnipresent in this book: in fact, the main character's name, John Huffam, was part of Dickens' full name. London, so central to Dickens' life and art, was a fascinating place for writer Avi, and he made it a true character of his story.
2. How old is John Huffam at the time of the story?

Answer: Fourteen

All of writer Avi's books have adolescents as their protagonists (if they're human). It necessary that John be a teenager, because he is still living at home when his father is imprisoned. It is much scarier for a young person to be dealing with the mystery of the book than it would be for an adult.
3. Where does John's father, Wesley, work?

Answer: The Naval Ordinance Office

At one point, John goes to the office to report that his father won't be in to work. Wesley's job plays into the plot. Charles Dickens' father really did work for the navy establishment.
4. Who is Sergeant Muldspoon?

Answer: John's teacher

Muldspoon is a mean, one-legged curmudgeon who would be right at home in a Dickens novel. He becomes one of John's suspects in the mystery of the story.
5. What is the occupation of Mr. Tuckum?

Answer: Bailiff

Tuckum is the Huffam family's "host" until Wesley is convicted. He takes them into his home to stay because their house is seized. He charges them for their stay, of course. Mainly, though, he is Wesley Huffam's guard until the trial.
6. How much money does Mr. O'Doul say Wesley Huffam owes him?

Answer: Three hundred pounds

Wesley denies owing this money from the very beginning. Apparently, O'Doul bought this supposed debt from other people. But it is, in fact, an element of the plot to get secrets from Wesley's important government job.
7. To what prison is Wesley Huffam sentenced?

Answer: Whitecross Street Prison

This event is based on one of the central ones of Dickens' life: the imprisonment of his father for debt. The quiz maker doesn't think there was such a thing as home confinement in 1849. Even the rich had to go to the Tower of London.
8. What is the name of John's friend and ally?

Answer: Sary the Sneak

Sary is so sneaky, John isn't even sure he can trust her until the end of the book: after all, she started out being paid by someone else to follow him! Her last name, Magwitch, is the same as a character in Dickens' "Great Expectations".
9. Which Charles Dickens novel is mentioned several times in the story?

Answer: David Copperfield

The novel was just being serialized at the time this story takes place. It is Dickens' famous semi-autobiographical novel.
10. What object does Mr. Snugsbee (the church caretaker) always use in his metaphors?

Answer: Coat

Mr. Snugsbee likes to hide from the world in his coat. But he also comes to think that John fits very well in his own "coat".
