The Untold History of Westeros: Part I Quiz

This is my quiz on "The World Of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros", a companion book for George R.R. Martin's ASOIAF. The book is too rich in information to fit in one quiz so this first part deals with the time before the Conquest.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote "Unnatural History"?

Answer: Septon Barth

Septon Barth was the son of a blacksmith, who was given to faith when still young. He came to work in the library at the Red Keep. King Jaehaerys later named him Hand of the King.
2. Obsidian is a special and rare material. What was the meaning of the word the Valyrians used for it?

Answer: Frozen Fire

Obsidian or Dragonglass (as called by the Smallfolk) is a special type of material that the children of forests used as a weapon. It was known to Valyrians by a word that meant "Frozen Fire". It is apparently the only material that can slay an Other, as was displayed by Samwell Tarly in "A Storm of Swords".
3. The First Men crossed the land bridge that connected Essos and Westeros. What is the name of this bridge?

Answer: Arm of Dorne

In the place of this bridge all that remain are Stepstones and Broken Arm. There is a contradiction on how this bridge was destroyed. Old legends claim that it was destroyed by Greenseers (the Children who had magical abilities) to halt the invasion. They say that the swamps of Neck are also their work. Archmaester Cassander claims that it was destroyed due to long summers and short winters that caused the frozen lands beyond Shivering Sea to melt, and the ocean level to rise.
4. After seemingly endless years of fighting, the First Men and Children of Forest at last made the Pact. What is the name of the place where this pact was made?

Answer: Isle of Faces

After much fighting, the elders of both races met in an island in the lake of God's Eye, where they forged the Pact. The Children carved faces in every tree on that island so that the gods might bear witness; that's the reason the island later came to be known as the Isle of Faces.

Some claim that Children still exist in the Isle of Faces, although no one has ever proved it. Forging of the Pact sealed the end of Dawn Age and heralded the coming of Age of Heroes.
5. It is told in songs and tales that, long before, a winter long and terrible befell on Westeros. What is the name of this period?

Answer: Long Night

It is stated that, in the Long Night, the Others came from the Lands of Always Winter riding on monstrous spiders and dead horses that had been resurrected to serve them. They brought cold and darkness with them, and their aim was to extinguish all warmth and light. The winter lasted such a long time that a whole generation of boys died without ever seeing the Spring.
6. Valyria was a kingdom.

Answer: No

Valyria was not a kingdom, it had no King. Instead, it was called the Valyrian Freehold because all the citizens who held land had a voice in the matters of the state. The Lord Freeholders sometimes chose Archons amongst them to help lead, but for a limited time.
7. Bricks and blood built _______ and bricks and blood her people. What is the word in the blank?

Answer: Astapor

It is an old rhyme about the City of Astapor, a city on the Slaver's Bay that is famous for its eunuch soldiers called The Unsullied. It is ruled by the Good Masters. This rhyme refers to the fact that the walls of the city are red and that blood was shed by the slaves of Astapor.
8. The Andals were a foreign people who conquered much of Westeros. What was the place where they first landed in Westeros?

Answer: The Fingers

Andals were a foreign people that originally lived in the Hills of Andalos but, due to the Dragonlords of Valyria, they migrated to Seven Kingdoms. The place where they first landed was on The Fingers in The Vale of Arryn. This is shown by the fact that there are carvings in stone of Seven-Pointed Star. The Fingers are four tiny peninsulas that extend into the Narrow Sea.
9. It is said that an Andal killed many Children of the Forest on the Hill of High Heart. What was the name of this Andal?

Answer: Erreg the Kinslayer

It was Erreg the Kinslayer who killed many Children that lived on the great hill, the High Heart, where they tended to mighty Wierwoods. It is said that there the Children and First Men fought together, but to no avail, they were all cut down by the Andals.
10. Which of the seven kingdoms was not conquered by the Andals?

Answer: North

Only one of the Seven Kingdoms was able to resist the wave of Andal invasion that swept the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, and it was The North. The major reasons for this were the swamps of the Neck and Moat Cailin, the old castle that now is ruin. Thus the Winter Kings of North were able to preserve their crown as well as their Old Gods.
11. The Warrior Queen, Princess Nymeria, landed in Westeros with ten thousand ships. What was the place where she landed?

Answer: Dorne

It was in Dorne that Princess Nymeria landed with her ten thousand ships. She married Mors Martell, the Lord of Sandship and crowned him Prince of Dorne. The Sun of Rhoynar and the Spear of Martells were joined to make the sigil of House Nymeros Martell. Both of them then conquered most of the Dorne, and to this day the Martells rule Dorne.
12. After the Doom of Valyria, which city laid claim to the mantle of Valyria?

Answer: Volantis

It was Volantis, the oldest of the Free Cities, that laid claim to Valyria's mantle after the Doom befell Valyria. They won some quick victories conquering Lys and Myr, but when they tried to seize Tyrosh, Pentos and Tyrosh joined to waage war against it; Myr and Lys rebelled, Storm King warred against a host of Volantis and then even Aegon the would-be conqueror set ablaze a Volantis Fleet on Balerion the Black Dread.
13. Before the doom befell Valyria, the Targaryens migrated from Valyria to Dragonstone because one of the Daughters of Aenar Targeryen had already seen the Doom coming. What was her name?

Answer: Daenys

It was Daenys the Dreamer who foresaw the coming of Doom, so the Targaryens migrated from Valyria to Dragonstone with all their wealth and dragons, thus escaping the doom. The Targaryens stayed on the Dragonstone for many generations until Aegon the Conqueror decided to conquer Westeros. The Targaryens ruled Westeros for about three centuries.
14. In which city was the Palace of Love situated?

Answer: Chroyane

It was in Chroyane, the festival city, the greatest of the Rhoynish cities, where this famous monument was found. This city was destroyed during the war between the Valyria and Rhoynish.
15. What was the name of the fiery mountains of Valyria?

Answer: Fourteen Flames

They were known as the Fourteen Flames and it was there the Valyrians found their dragons. When these mountains erupted the whole Valyrian Empire was destroyed; this event is known as the Doom of Valyria. These mountains are still reported to be active.
