Sandry's visiting her cousin, the empress. Sandry's mother and father died in the smallpox epidemic in Hatar. Sandry inherited her Namornese lands from her mother. During the book, Sandry realizes that her mother hadn't always done the best things for her people, and hopes to do better.

Daja realizes that she is a lesbian in Namorn. When it's time to return to Emelan, she asks Rizu to return with her, but Rizu says no. Daja is very upset, because she really loved Rizu, and hates to leave her behind.

Pershan, or Shan, kidnaps Sandry because he wants to marry her. Finlach (Fin) also kidnaps Sandry, but he does it at the palace. Fin was ordered by the Empress to court Sandry in order to keep Sandry in Namorn. Berenene was very angry when she found out because Shan was her lover, and she didn't like that he wanted to marry Sandry.

Quen, as he is called, helped Shan try to kidnap Sandry. He was defeated by Briar and Daja and wrapped in a cocoon. During the book, Shan is the Empress's lover, but Quen still hopes to take his place.

Ambros was her parents' steward. He managed the estate for a long time. In the end, because Sandry knows that her people won't get the attention they deserve if she continues to live in Ememlan, Sandry signs over her lands and title to Ambros, so he becomes the Cleham.
