Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" consisted of six sections. Of these six, how many sections concentrated on the punishment?

Answer: 5

The first section described the Crime, while the remaining five sections (including the epilogue) focused on his Punishment. This includes both his mental punishment and the actual physical punishment that eventuated.
2. What type of imagery was not present in Margret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale"?

Answer: spiritual

The gustatory and olfactory images of food and perfume, as well as the kinesthetic imagery of cutting flowers, juxtapose the discontentment of Offred's life as a handmaid. Spirituality was not present in the novel.
3. What kind of society does Aldous Huxley's dystopian work, "Brave New World", allude to?

Answer: communist

This is evident by the names of the characters in the novel, such as Bernard MARX and LENINa Crowne. Conformity and communism go hand in hand, and Huxley's correlation is evident as a motif in the novel.
4. What is the name of the alien race created by Kurt Vonnegut?

Answer: Tralfamadorians

They are present in a few of Vonnegut's works, mainly in "Slaughter House Five". They are an advanced alien race that explain the nature of time and existence to Billy Pilgrim, the protagonist.
5. Who is the protagonist of Albert Camus' "The Stranger"?

Answer: Meursault

Salamano and Raymond are Meursault's neighbors, and Celeste is the owner of a restaurant Meursault frequently eats at.
6. Which of the following is not a work by Kurt Vonnegut?

Answer: "Return to Slaughter House Five"

"Return to Slaughter House Five" is something I made up. "Welcome to the Monkey House", "The Sirens of Titan", and "Cat's Cradle" are all very existential works. In each work there is at least one character that searches for the meaning of his existence or comes to some kind of epiphany regarding existence.
7. Which of the following novels is a satire on the Russian Revolution?

Answer: "Animal Farm"

This is the story of farm animals who create and destroy a society parallel to that of the Russian Revolution.
8. Which of the following was written by Fyodor Dostoevsky?

Answer: "The Brothers Karamazov"

The others are works by Leo Tolstoy. "The Brothers Karamazov" is the last of Dostoevsky's great works. It is a story about three brothers and a patricide. Like most Dostoevsky works, the novel incorporates a lot of sorrow, soul searching, greed, and much more - what a great read!
9. What year was Orwell's "1984" published?

Answer: 1949

Good thing things didn't turn out that way- that would have been freaky. "Big Brother is watching you" is from this Orwell work.
10. What is evident in most books about utopias, especially those that have an existential motif?

Answer: the utopia turns out to be a dystopia

In all the utopian novels mentioned in the quiz, as well as many many others, we realize that the utopia created and maintained by the characters becomes the opposite of what they intended because of power and greed; hence, a dystopian world is created in place of it.
