There and Back Again: "The Hobbit" Quiz

My first quiz, so I did it on my favorite single novel by J.R.R Tolkien. I would advise you to have read the book before taking this quiz, as some questions are fairly specific. Take your time and have fun!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our friendly protagonist, Bilbo Baggins, wakes up on the first day of his grand adventure, unaware that he is going on any adventure at all. He is informed, however, by a note pointed out by Gandalf, placed where inside Bag End?

Answer: On the mantle

Bilbo is very much alarmed when, after reading the note, he realizes he has precious little time to meet the dwarves before they leave without him, and runs out of the house without so much as a pocket handkerchief.
2. Bilbo and company meet three trolls on their journey to Mount Erebor who plan to eat them. What are their names?

Answer: Tom, Bill and Bert

The dwarves lay very frightened in large sacks listening to the trolls debating how best to cook and eat them until Gandalf came to the rescue. Gandalf kept them arguing until the sun comes up, something that turns them to stone.
3. The company reaches Rivendell, last Homely House west of the mountains, which sits upon a narrow gorge of what river?

Answer: Bruinen

The Master of the house, Elrond, lived through all three ages, being born in Beleriand in the First Age.
4. Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves decide to cross one of their largest obstacles, The Misty Mountains, by which route?

Answer: The High Pass

The company did not know that this pass was guarded by goblins, who captured them as they slept in a cave on the mountain.
5. After being captured, the company is brought to the Goblin King, whose name is...?

Answer: The Great Goblin

What a surprise...

The Great Goblin is described as being an unusually large orc with a large head. He is enraged when he discovers that Bilbo's party wields 'Beater' and 'Biter', two feared swords.
6. Across the Misty Mountains and low on food, Gandalf decides to take the company to a shapeshifter named Beorn. What creature does the company's host transform into?

Answer: A huge bear

Beorn follows the company as a bear to make sure they remember their promise to return the ponies they borrowed from him. However, only the keen eyes of Bilbo and Gandalf pick him up, a speck in the distance.
7. In Mirkwood, one of the company's dwarven companions falls into a river, after which he sleeps for days. What is the name of the magical river he falls into, which also causes amnesia?

Answer: It is not given a proper name

The dwarf, Bombur, when he woke, could recall nothing after the company set out from the Shire, save one huge dream about a feast. He had a hard time believing their stories about the adventures they had.
8. How did the dwarves escape right from under the nose of the Elven King?

Answer: Bilbo saved them by packing them into barrels and sending them down the river

There was one flaw in Bilbo's plan though, he forgot to pack himself into a barrel! He had to jump down into the river, trying to stay above the water, until he climbed up onto a barrel and could float with his friends to the river men, waiting for their shipment of barrels to arrive.
9. Who killed the deadly dragon Smaug, freeing the Lonely Mountain and surrounding country from its shadow of evil?

Answer: Bard the Bowman

It was Bard the Bowman who heard about Smaug's weak spot from a thrush who overheard Bilbo talking about it after his conversation with the dragon.
10. Bonus: In the Battle of Five Armies at the end of the book, who killed Bolg, orc ruler of Moria? Also, who was Bolg's father, who had been slain by the dwarf Dain.

Answer: Beorn; Azog

Azog was a great (in the bad, evil sense) orc, who was very prominent in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.
