Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This young wizard is going by the name of Raistlin Majere and he has just passed the Test. While measuring him up for his robe, you notice the Test has left him with grey hair, golden skin and retinas in the shape of hourglasses. What colour robe do you hand him before he leaves the Tower of High Sorcery?

Answer: Red

Raistlin Majere, after completing the Test in the Tower of High Sorcery in Wayreth, dons the red robe. The Test has left some after effects on Raistlin that cause onlookers to shudder. It has made him physically weak with gold skin and silver hair, but these pale in comparison with his hourglass eyes.

These eyes make Raistlin see things as time would affect them. Mountains turn to dust, mighty trees rot and human flesh decomposes. This may sound terrible, but when I first read about Raistlin eyes in the book "Dragons of Autumn Twilight" in the late 80s at the age of 14 or 15. I thought it was the coolest thing ever and wanted a pair of them; sadly, my mother sad no.
2. This Death Knight was once a Knight of the Rose, one of the highest ranks in the Solamnic Knights order. You hear the clank of Lord Soth's armour and are soon looking deep into his fiery eyes. Just before his skeletal warriors attack and his banshees scream you hand him what colour robe?

Answer: No robe is given at all

While Lord Soth is a magic user, he is not mage trained, so no robe is given. His magic abilites are the use of power words and his command of skeletal warriors and banshees. These abilities stem from him being a death knight rather than from the incantations a mage would use. Lord Soth's demise is intertwined with the Cataclysm on the world of Krynn: he could have stopped the Cataclysm, but on the way to warn the Kingpriest of Istar, he had three elf-maids hinting at his wife's so-called infidelity. This caused him to head back home and, as the Cataclysm hit the world of Krynn, he watched his wife and son burn to death when he could have at least saved his son. As Lord Soth's wife died she cursed him, and he became a death knight, his followers in life became the skeletal warriors and the three elf-maids became banshees.

Lord Soth first appeared in the book "Dragons of Spring Dawning" which was the third book in the Dragonlance Chronicles series. Lord Soth's character has even appeared in the Ravenloft campaign setting and the book was called "Knight of the Black Rose"
3. This magic user is the head of the Conclave at the Tower of High Sorcery. Par-Salian, like many wizards, has suffered while undergoing the test, and feels the weight of decisions he has made. Knowing who he is and what god of magic he represents, what colour robe do you hand him?

Answer: White

Par-Salian wears the white robes and he is the head of the white robes and the head of the Conclave of wizards at the Tower of High Sorcery. Before Raistlin had taken the test, Par-Salian knew that dark forces were on the horizon and that Raistlin's skills as a wizard would be needed in the upcoming fight. He also knew that the long dead wizard, Fistandantilus, was also seeking a wizard's body to take over, but he took the gamble anyway as the need was so great. In hoping to teach Raistlin and his twin brother Caramon a lesson, he let Caramon witness the Test. During this Test Caramon, who had no magical abilities at all, was seen by Raistlin to hurl fireballs out of thin air. In a fit of rage Raistlin killed Caramon, but this was all just an illusion and part of the Test. As you can imagine, those events did have an effect on the twins' relationship afterwards. Beside the physical changes to Raistlin's body he received the Staff of Magius from Par-Salian.

For what Par-Salian did to Raistlin in the Test, Raistlin does have some revenge in the book "Test of The Twins", turning Par-Salian's lower half to marble so he has to watch the end of the world.
4. An elf comes towards you with his chest bared. Instead of admiring this beautiful person, you find yourself gawking at the weeping wounds in his chest. This elf goes by the name Dalamar, and he laughs at your discomfort. What colour robe do you hand him as he go back to the Tower of High Sorcery in the city of Palanthas?

Answer: Black

Dalamar is a Silvanesti elf, and he wears the black robes after swearing his allegiance to the god of dark magic, Nuitari. He was sent by the Conclave of wizards to spy on Raistlin Majere in the Tower of High Sorcery, Palanthas. Raistlin, in his supreme confidence, knew about this, and told Dalamar about his plans to become a god, so he could report back to the Conclave.

However, Dalamar's reward from Raistlin for doing this was the five gaping wounds in his chest. Raistlin, with his magic, was able to insert his fingers and thumb into the elf's chest, leaving Dalamar with seeping wounds that would never heal. Dalamar, despite being a wizard of the black robes, has helped the causes of good at times, even helping to thwart Raistlin's plans in the book "Test of the Twins".
5. A befuddled old wizard approaches and tells you his name is "Bond, James Bond". Noticing his companion is a kender, you check your pockets to find nothing missing. The kender is called Tasselhoff, and he tells you the wizard goes by the name of Fizban. Fizban tells you he wants the robe that he was wearing the day he first met the Heroes of the Lance. What colour robe do you give them to get the pair of them out of your sight before the wizard remembers the fireball spell?

Answer: White

When the Heroes of the Lance first encounter Fizban in the book "Dragons of Autumn Twilight", he is attacking a tree with his walking stick. The book describes his robe as a colour "that once might have been white". Now since Fizban in the Dragonlance books turns out to be the God of Good called Paladine, he uses the befuddled avatar appearance of Fizban to first interact with the Heroes. While in the prison cart on the way to Pax Tharkas, Raistlin, who was sick, seemed to recognize the old mage for who he really was, and he looked shocked and terrified until Fizban made him forget.

Since Fizban is a mage and also the chief God of Good, whether Fizban actually took The Test is unknown. His travels with the Heroes, and mainly Tasslehoff, meant that when the Kender species referred to Paladine they used the name Fizban.
6. Of all things to come up squawking, you find yourself talking to a seagull. You soon realise that this avatar belongs to a young mage by the name of Guerrand DiThon. What colour robe do you pass to the seagull before it deposits something nasty on the floor?

Answer: Red

Guerrand DiThon is the main character in the book "Night of The Eye", which is the first book in the "Defenders of Magic" trilogy. He was born in Northern Ergoth, and was secretly learning magic behind his brother's back, even managing to summon a familiar by the name of Zagarus, who is a seagull. Belize, the head of the red robes in the Tower of High Sorcery, suggests he should head to the Tower to further his studies and even become an apprentice to another magician. Due to his lack of teaching and his understanding of the orders of magic, he has it explained to him what each order of magic stands for.

After having this explained to him, Guerrand decides to wear the red robes and becomes an apprentice to the wizard Justarius. Belize, however, does not recognize Geurrand at the Tower of High Sorcery, and only suggested learning more magic to be rid of Geurrand from Northern Ergoth.
7. This mage has got you confused, as he has worn all the coloured robes at one point in his life. You are so confused you have even forgotten his name. Lucky for you he says "shirak" and he lights up the situation and you suddenly remember he was a close friend of the knight called Huma. What item do hand this mage which also bears his name?

Answer: Staff of Magius

Hopefully, with the clue "shirak" in the question, you were able to deduce that the item once belonged to the wizard Magius. The Staff of Magius has a crystal on it and, when the wizard who is using at the time says "shirak", the crystal glows, and stops glowing when the wizard says "Dulak". The staff was also a vital part of closing the Portal of the Abyss to stop the Dark Queen, Takhisis coming into the world of Krynn in the book "Dragons of Spring Dawning".

Magius during his Test was shown a vision of his death and he spent most of his life trying to ensure this did not happen. When he found that the restrictions of the three orders of magic was stopping him from averting his fate he became a renegade and served under another renegade wizard by the name of Galan Dracos. He tried to escape the clutches of Galen and in doing so met up with his childhood friend the Knight Huma. Magius towards the end of the book "Legend of Huma" wears the white robes and he does die, but his sacrifice does enable wizards to carry a weapon and from that day. When a wizards spells are depleted they have a small dagger which they can defend themselves with.
8. The next mage to come into my vision turns out to be the most feared of mages during the time of the Kingpriest. He goes by the name of Fistandantilus and, before he can mention the Cataclysm, he sees the cleric Denubis and wants his robe immediately. Not wanting to incur his wrath you quickly hand him what colour robe?

Answer: Black

Fistandantilus was one of the most feared wizards during the Age of Might, and he wears the black robes. Originally he did wear the red robes, but he could not find the path to immortality via them, and then switched to the black robes. By using the artifact known as the blood stone, Fistandantilus is able to remove the life energy from other mages to help sustain his long life.

He aided Raistlin Majere in passing The Test but this came back to haunt him; in the book "Time of the Twins", Raistlin cast a time travel spell and killed Fistandantilus. Raistlin should have been happy at this outcome, but he found that all he had done was to replace Fistandantilus and repeat his every move in the timeline.
9. This young mage has some impressive lineage, as he is related to three of the Heroes of the Lance. His mother by goes the name of Tika Majere. His father is called Caramon Majere, which, of course, leaves him with his famous or infamous uncle, Raistlin Majere. This young mage is called Palin and he has just passed the life threatening Test held in the Palanthas Tower of High Sorcery. So what colour robe do you hand him knowing that even in the Abyss, his uncle is watching him with pride?

Answer: White

Palin Majere first appears in the book "The Magic of Krynn", which is a collection of short stories. "The Legacy" recounts Palin's test in the Tower of High Sorcery, Palanthas. In his test he enters the Abyss through the portal and meets his uncle Raistlin. By summoning the illusion of Raistlin for the use of the Test, Dalamar has in fact summoned Raistlin, though Raistlin says it was his own choosing. Dalamar and Caramon, while waiting for Palin to recover from the test, are disturbed by one of tower guardians who hands the Staff of Magius to Palin with the regards of the true master of the tower. This event unnerves Dalamar, as he still thinks that Raistlin is confined in the Abyss. Due to the influence of his parents and his love for them, Palin decides that he can only wear the white robes.

Palin goes on in later books in the Dragonlance series to be one of the greatest wizards on the world Krynn, even fulfilling Raistlin's prophecy that he will become mightier than him. Palin also becomes the head of the Conclave of wizards, even meeting his uncle, Raistlin again.
10. The last mage you deal with on your shift in Tower of High Sorcery happens to be a high ranking elf. In fact, he is the Speaker of the Stars, and goes by the name Lorac. Before you can ask what he is doing with an orb, he asks for what coloured robe?

Answer: White

Lorac is the head of the Silvanesti elves, and is known as the Speaker of the Stars. Most elves are only allowed to study magic if they wear white robes. If an elf is spotted wearing a different colour robe theyare banished from their home city, which is what happened to Dalamar. During his test at the Tower of High Sorcery in Ishtar, the magical artifact known as a Dragon Orb spoke to Lorac about the upcoming Cataclysm, and he smuggled the orb back to Silvanesti.

It is revealed in the book "Dragons of Winter Night" that Lorac had used the Dragon Orb to repel the invading armies, but in doing so had lost his mind to the orb.

The orb then transformed the forest of Silvanesti into a reality that mirrored Lorac's worst nightmares.
