Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Stephanie was hired to find old Moses Bedemier, who'd gone FTA (failure to appear). Why had he needed Vinnie's bond money to begin with?

Answer: he'd been caught with a concealed handgun

Initially, Uncle Mo had been pulled over by a newbie cop named Benny Gaspick, better known as Officer Picky. Mo had been doing 35 mph in a 25 mph zone, which is a traffic violation. Then, Officer Picky realized Mo had a concealed weapon in his jacket pocket. Uncle Mo had owned a candy shop in town since 1958 and was beloved by practically all of the burg's citizens. Stephanie knew her work was cut out for her in locating such a cherished townie.

The early investigation led her to conclude that Mo wouldn't have even bother being FTA on such a minor incident, as concealeds were common in Trenton.

He could have easily appeared and been sentenced to a minor punishment.
2. Did Stephanie buy herself a vehicle?

Answer: Yes

She bought a little blue Nissan pickup, which broke down in less than 48 hours. Lula was driving it at the time, as the two had just recovered a young FTA named Stuart Baggett. He was a 22 year old kid working in the mall's hotdog shop. He and his buds had gone on a drunken ride one night and shot up some parked cars, two of which were police cars.

When the truck broke down, Stuart bolted away, as Lula and Stephanie were not watching him. Steph cursed herself for not handcuffing him. At least the continued search for him gave her something to do while Mo remained MIA.
3. Who is Stephanie's long time friend, who is also a cop and married to her cousin Shirley?

Answer: Eddie Gazarra

After Stephanie had illegally entered Mo's residence, two other entered it as well. One of these was a man named Ronald Anders. Anders saw Stephanie and knocked her unconscious. When she awoke, Ronald was dead and she was lying in a pool of his blood.

After calling Joe, making a statement, and seeing a doctor, Stephanie went home. The next morning her good friend Eddie came by with doughnuts and coffee and told her that some cops wanted to pin Ronald's death on Stephanie. Eddie wanted Stephanie to know that Vinnie was Ronald's bondsman on an earlier charge of drug selling and illegal arms possession.

He warned her to get her affairs straightened out in case she was charged with murder.
4. After losing Stuart Baggett and filing a report, Stephanie found this person at Vinnie's waiting for her to locate a missing man and a missing car.

Answer: Jackie

Jackie claimed she was less worried about her boyfriend Cameron Brown, than she was the car he'd taken when he left. It was a 1992 dark blue Chrysler LeBaron. Lula and Stephanie drove all over looking for it. And, in typically Plum fashion, it was when she stopped looking for it that it appeared to Stephanie.

It as parked at an apartment building in a nicer part of town, so Jackie went back there to sit in it and wait out Cameron. She wanted to shoot him when she caught him cheating red handed. But, as weird was the theme for this book, Cameron didn't make an appearance. Joe warned Stephanie off the case, but Steph claimed Jackie was her friend. Joe reminded her that a drug using hooker was no one's friend. Mentally she agreed, but Steph wasn't ready to give in just yet.. It turned out that Cameron was already dead inside the dumpster, and when Jackie found him, she shot a few more rounds into him for good measure!
5. Ranger decided to try and whip Stephanie into (physical) shape.

Answer: True

Stephanie turned to Ranger when young Gillian reported a light on inside Mo's place. Ranger went in, but Mo got away in Ranger's BMW 850 Ci. So, the two paired up to finish off the Mo manhunt, and Ranger needed/wanted Steph to be in better shape. He took her running, encouraged push-ups, and tried to get her to ingest nutritional food items.

She went along with some of it begrudgingly, but her heart wasn't into improving her health. Like she told Ranger, she didn't want to be in shape, she wanted to be adequate.

She changed her mind before the end of the book, after being shot at so many times!
6. After Joe changed his tactic with Stephanie, she decided to get highlights in her hair. What color did her hair turn, instead of achieving the nice red highlights she wanted?

Answer: orange

It was just her luck that while she sat in highlight foil she spotted her FTA, Stuart Baggett. She jumped up and chased him through the mall, but he once again evaded her capture. When she returned to the salon, her color had been on too long. The entirety of her hair had turned orange! I cannot even see how that is possible, as the mixture wasn't on her entire head of hair. She didn't correct the problem right off, and spent the rest of the book with orange hair. Like she mentioned after an attempt to brown it back, it wasn't like orange hair was Ebola or Dengue fever!

While reading about Joe's gentle and friendly treatment of Stephanie I knew the man had changed tactics to get her re-interested in him. He proved that very thing not much later, when he tricked her into drinking schnapps with him.
7. It was looking more and more like Uncle Mo was on an execution spree of local drug dealers. When the cops dug up his basement, how many bodies did they find?

Answer: 4

Stephanie had experienced a few rounds of harassment from three masked men. On one occasion they even tried to buy her off of the search for Mo. She refused money, ignored intimidation, and was finally traumatized beyond belief by them when they pepper sprayed her and burned her hand.

She kept at the hunt despite all of that, and she and Joe eventually discovered bodies in the candy store's basement. The recovered four bodies and Stephanie encountered four others in the pursuit of Mo.
8. Lula told Stephanie that she believed Ranger to be a superhero.

Answer: True

She pointed out to Stephanie that superheros were smart, mysterious and often hot. No one knew where Ranger lived, as his listed address was a vacant lot. Lula obviously had a thing for Ranger, and based on the man's description, what woman wouldn't? He's dark skinned, of Cuban descent, has long black hair and hard muscled body. Lula even went on one of the runs Ranger and Stephanie took, but she tired out quickly.

While he is practically monosyllabic most of the time, he's proven quite capable, smart and conscientious.

He even had dinner at the Plum house one night, quite impressing Grandma Mazur.
9. Where was Stuart Baggett working when Stephanie finally captured him?

Answer: Cluck in a Bucket

Stephanie had Lula looking for Stuart when she was out on an errand or getting lunch. Lula found him right away, and Stephanie came to the restaurant fully loaded in apprehension gear. Stuart gave fight and flight, but Steph tackled him inside the place.

The cops arrived on scene and made a few jokes about the capture, and Steph finally got her body receipt for Stuart. It didn't pay much, but at that point she wanted him caught as a matter of accomplishment.
10. Who helped Stephanie take down Uncle Mo at the house in the woods?

Answer: Ranger

Stephanie discovered that Mo had been making his own porno films in the house in the woods. He'd done it for years and made a lot of money doing so. Mo had used drug dealers to find him desperate young "talent", but he'd also used some kids Steph had gone to school with. When one of these dealers had started to blackmail Mo, he turned to the radical preacher of the Freedom Church. The preacher, Bill, had killed the drug dealer and developed a fast and easy taste for killing. He formed a local vigilante unit, and coerced Mo to give the names of more dealers and hardcore users. When Steph believed she'd located Mo, she called Ranger to meet her in the woods. He did, and took up the rear of the home as she entered the front. Initially Mo was relieved to see Steph and not Bill, who was looking to eliminate Mo. When she told him she knew about the movies, he became nervous and Ranger held a gun from behind to assure he didn't bolt. Right then Lula arrived on scene and was closely followed by reverend Bill. Bill used a rocket launcher to get his point across, killing Steph's Nissan in the process. She and Lula escorted Mo out the back of the house, while Ranger stayed to keep the vigilantes of the Freedom Church busy. The cops weren't far behind the killers, and Mo and Bill went to trial for their crimes.

The book ended with Joe offering to play a game in his garage with Stephanie.. some things never change! Look for a quiz on book four as well!
