Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three of these novels were written as first person narratives. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott

In a first person narrative the story is told by a character or group of characters, with the unfolding plot described from the narrator's particular point of view. An unreliable narrator is often used for dramatic effect to add surprise or uncertainty to the plot.

"Catcher in the Rye" was written from the perspective of the Holden Caulfield; "Great Expectations" was narrated by Pip Pirrip; and "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" was told from Huck's point of view. In contrast, while "Little Women" gave more attention to Jo March than her sisters, the narrative was third person.
2. Three of these novels are set in the future (or at least, what would have been the future when they were first published). Which is the odd one out?

Answer: "Gone With the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell

"Gone With the Wind" was published in 1936 and set during the US Civil War more than seven decades earlier.

"Brave New World" was first published in 1932. It is set in 2540, although in Huxley's future world the dating system refers to Henry Ford, so the year is 632 A.F.

"Fahrenheit 451" was published in 1953 and set in an unspecified year in the future.

"Nineteen Eighty-Four" was published in 1949 and set it...you guessed it, 1984!
3. Three of these novels are set in wartime. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Kesey

Ken Kesey's novel, later adapted into an Oscar-winning movie, was set in a psychiatric hospital.

Hemingway set "A Farewell to Arms" during the Italian campaign of the First World War. "Catch-22" also took place in Italy during a war, although this time it was World War II. "Schindler's Ark" (published in some countries as "Schindler's List") was based on the true account of Oskar Schindler's heroic actions in Germany and Poland during World War II.
4. Between the 16th and mid-20th centuries the Catholic Church maintained an Index of Prohibited Books. Three of the following books appeared on the Index at one time or another. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: "Das Kapital" by Karl Marx

The Index Librorum Prohibitorum aimed to shield the faithful from books containing theological errors or immorality. However, just because an author or book was not placed on the list, this does not mean that the works could be considered acceptable to the church. The Index was formally abolished in 1966 by Pope Paul VI.
5. Three of these popular novels have a female protagonist. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky

A novel's protagonist is its main character; often the character from whose perspective the story is told.

"Crime and Punishment" centres on a young man, Rodion Raskolnikov, and his psychological state after committing a murder. Published in 1866, it is considered one of the finest novels in Russian literature.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is told from the point of view of young Scout (Jean Louise) Finch while "A Wrinkle in Time" focuses on teenager Meg Murry. Hester Prynne is the central character of "The Scarlet Letter".
6. Three of these best sellers were first published in a language other than English. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: "Lolita" by Vladimir Nabokov

While Vladimir Nabokov wrote his first nine novels in his native Russian language, "Lolita" was written and published in English. Nabokov later translated his own work into Russian.

"The Name of the Rose" was originally written in Italian under the title "Il Nome Della Rosa".

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was written in Swedish. The literal translation of its Swedish title is "Men Who Hate Women".

"One Hundred Years of Solitude", which has been translated into more than three dozen languages, was originally written and published in Spanish.
7. Three of these books were published after their author's death. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: "The Plague" by Albert Camus

"The Plague" was published in 1947 when Camus was 34 years old. He died in a car accident aged 46. His uncompleted novel "The First Man" was published more than three decades later.

Jane Austen completed "Persuasion" in 1816 and died the next year, five months before its publication.

Franz Kafka, who died in 1924 at the age of 40, left instructions for all of his papers and unpublished works to be burned after his death. They were famously ignored and the world received "The Trial", "The Castle", "Amerika" and many short stories as well.

Anne Frank's diary was retrieved from the family's Amsterdam hiding place by Miep Gies when the family were captured by the Nazis in 1944. After the war Gies gave the diary to Anne's father, the only surviving member of the family. In her diary Anne wrote of wanting to publish a book based on her experience, so in 1947 the diary was first published under the title "Het Achterhuis" ("The Back House"). It has since been published into more than 60 languages.
8. Three of the following were cited by the Swedish Academy when awarding the Nobel Prize for Literature to their authors. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: "No Exit" by Jean-Paul Sartre

While the Academy does not usually award the Nobel Prize for individual works, instead recognising a writer's overall contribution, specific books have been singled out for attention on several occasions.

Sartre (who was related to dual Nobel laureate Albert Schweitzer) was awarded the Prize in 1964. The committee noted that his work "which, rich in ideas and filled with the spirit of freedom and the quest for truth, has exerted a far-reaching influence on our age." However, he declined the honour on principle, saying "a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution".
9. Three of these books are part of C.S. Lewis' series about Narnia. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: The Dark is Rising

"The Dark is Rising" is the second book in Susan Cooper's young adult fantasy series. It draws on Celtic and Norse mythology and old English legends about King Arthur. The book received the Newbery Honor in 1974; another book in the series, "The Grey King", won the Newbery Medal two years later.
10. Three of the following are major awards for outstanding literary works. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Fields Medal

The John Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for outstanding contributions to children's literature. It was instituted in 1922 and is named after an 18th century publisher of children's books.
