"Tipping the Velvet" Trivia Quiz

Hey, I've just read the book 'Tipping the Velvet' by Sarah Waters, and thought it was great. Please don't confuse the book with the T.V. series, as I never saw it and, although it's based on the book, I cannot guarantee it is all the same.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What type of food does Nancy's family restaurant specialise in?

Answer: Oysters

Nancy is especially skilled at preparing Oysters, and seems to make them for whoever she is trying to impress throughout the book.
2. What is the nickname Kitty uses for Nancy?

Answer: Nan.

Nancy is highly excited when she is given this nickname, because it makes her feel so special and helps her to think Kitty really likes her.
3. What is the name of Kitty's (and later Nancy's)manager?

Answer: Walter

Walter begins as a great friend to Nancy, but she then finds him in bed with Kitty, and she announces that they are to be married. Nancy's heart is broken, and she spends much of her time on the streets blaming and hating Walter.
4. What are the names of the woman and her daughter that Nancy boards with and becomes great friends with?

Answer: Mrs Milne and Gracie

I don't think Nancy really realises how much she liked Mrs Milne and Gracie until she had to leave and saw how heartbroken Gracie was. They are the first people she turns to when she is thrown back onto the streets, and she is horrified when they are no longer living there. However, this reaction may have something to do with the fact she is left homeless, pennyless and friendless!
5. What is the name of the estate where Diana lives?

Answer: Felicity Place

Felicity place is a wonderful home for Nancy, who has never had nice things or a big home. However, she soon grows bored of her new home.
6. What is the name of the young girl who Nancy is caught with, resulting in her eviction from Diana's home?

Answer: Zena

Zena appears to be very sweet and innocent, but she quickly turns nasty and leaves Nancy alone with nothing. At the same time, however, she had lost everything because of Nancy's desires to both have Zena and make Diana jealous! All is forgiven between the two by the end of the book.
7. What is the name of the street on which Nancy finds the mysterious Florence living on?

Answer: Quilter street

Nancy goes to the charity Florence (who she had met briefly years before) used to work at. The people there do not wish to give personal information out and encourage Nancy to write a letter, which they will send on. Nan convinces them that she can neither read nor write, and so the lady from the charity goes to get the address of the charity which Florence now works at, leaving Florence's personal details out on the desk. Nan, who can of course read, makes a mental note of the address and goes straight to Flo's home. Crafty little madam!
8. What relation is Ralph to Florence?

Answer: Brother

Florence lives with her brother, who has no problem with Florence's sexuality. Most of the rest of her family disapprove. Nan is amazed at how open the household is, and takes to wearing her trousers around the house, as they do not mind. She also has her hair cut short again, becoming a real 'Tom'(lesbian).
9. What is the name of the woman who Florence was secretly in love with?

Answer: Lillian

This story is so sad. Lillian was Flo's best friend and had no idea how she felt for her. Then, when everything was going well in their lives, Lillian had a baby and died in childbirth. The child, Cyril, lives with Flo, and he is a constant reminder of Lillian. Although she loves him very much, she sometimes cannot bear to be near him, as she lost Lillian because of him.
10. What is the name of the pub, open specially for 'Toms' that Florence takes Nancy to?

Answer: The Boy in the boat

It is in this pub that someone recognises Nancy as the stage star Nan King, and she surprises Florence (and herself!) by singing for her fans. When they get home, Florence is surprised further, as Nancy tells her all about her sordid past.
