Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Lothlorien mean?

Answer: "land of blossoms dreaming"

Another name for this forest is just plain Lorien. The Galadhrim or "tree-people" lived here. They were a very reclusive Elven race. Their king was the famous Celeborn and their queen was Galadriel, "lady of the light".
2. What does Henneth Annun mean?

Answer: "window of the sunset"

This was the greatest stronghold of the Rangers of Ithilien. It was a refuge of caves and tunnels behind a great waterfall that looked over the Vales of Anduin. The Rangers were a brotherhood of knights sent to reinforce Gondor's power in North Ithilien and their captain was Faramir, second son of Denethor.
3. Alright, here's an easy one: what does Ainur mean?

Answer: "the holy ones"

The Ainur were created by Iluvatar and he commanded them to create a great music. That music became the world, Arda, and the Ainur went to the earth and became its gods.
4. What does Alqualonde mean?

Answer: "the haven of the swans"

Alqualonde was built on Tol Eressea, "the lonely isle", by the Teleri. The Teleri were the most sea-faring of the Elves who went to the Undying Lands. They built Alqualonde and fashioned their ships to look like great swans. The gate to the city was an arch of sea-carved stone.
5. What does Celebrimbor mean?

Answer: "Hand of Silver"

Celebrimbor was the chief smith who fashioned the Three Rings given to the Elves. He was later slain by Sauron while trying to retrieve the One Ring from him.
6. What does Dagor Nirnaeth Arnoediad mean?

Answer: "Battle of Unnumbered Tears"

The Dagor Nirnaeth Arnoediad was fought during the First Age and was one of the bloodiest wars ever fought in Middle-Earth. It was the terrible fifth battle of the Wars of Beleriand. I really liked its translation so I added it in.
7. What does Anfauglir mean?

Answer: "Jaws of Thirst"

Anfauglir was the Hell-wolf sent by Morgoth out of Angband. It bit off the hand of Beren, who cut a Silmaril off of Morgoth's crown, and slew him. It went and ravaged the land until it slew and was slain by the great hound, Huan. The Silmaril was recovered from its stomach after its death. Also known as Carcharoth, "the Red Maw".
8. What does Imladris mean?

Answer: "Deep Dale of the Cleft"

Those of you who are Tolkien fanatics may recognize Imladris as the
Elven translation of "Rivendell". This last homely resting-place is run by Elrond and offers Frodo and his companions refuge during their quest to destroy the One Ring.
9. What does Uruloki mean?

Answer: "fire-drakes"

This is a really cool name for the dragons. Smaug was one of the Uruloki because he could fly and breathe sulphurous flames. The father of the dragons, Glaurung, was also a fire-drake.
10. A nice, easy one to end the quiz: what does Avari mean?

Answer: "the unwilling"

These were those Elves who did not want to follow Orome to the Undying Lands. They were "unwilling" to leave Middle-Earth and travel to an unknown land. They included the Nandor, the Falathrim, the Laiquendi, and the Sindar.
