Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the head of the last Homely House, son of Eärendil and Elwing?

Answer: Elrond

Elrond Halfelven was the herald of Gil-Galad at the last alliance of Elves and Men when Sauron was overthrown at the end of the Second Age. He wields the strongest of the elven-rings, Vilya. He rules the haven of Rivendell, and, through the powers of his ring, has strengthened the area. He is the father of Arwen Evenstar, and was the protector of Aragorn in his childhood.

Elrond, throughout the story of "Lord of the Rings", plays the role of the conservative. His wisdom is great, but he fears the change that is about to engulf the Middle-earth.
2. He was a companion to Frodo, and the son of Thranduil, King of the Green Elves, making him the Prince of the woodland elves. Can you name him?

Answer: Legolas

In the story of "Lord of the Rings", Legolas befriends Gimli the dwarf forging a friendship between Elves and Dwarves that had never before been, and will never be again; After the death of King Elessar it is said that Legolas built a ship and sailed with the body of Aragorn across the sea to Aman, and with him came Gimli, so strong was their friendship.

Legolas is a skilled archer, as can be seen throughout the story. He is fleet and strong, but loyal and thoughtful, always listening to everyone's council. Though immortal, he gets treated like a younger elf pretty often.
3. Name a female elf that wedded a mortal man.

Answer: Arwen

Lúthien Tinúviel wedded Beren the one-handed, the man who freed a Silmaril from the Iron Crown of Morgoth. Idril wedded Tuor, a great warrior and hero, in Gondolin. Arwen Evenstar wedded King Aragorn in Gondor at the end of the War of the Ring. Mithrellas wedded Imrazôr the Númenórean, father of the line of the Princes of Dol Amroth.
4. Keeper of the Grey Havens, first bearer of Narya, the red ring of the elves, who is the first to recognize Gandalf's greatness when the wizard arrives in the Middle-earth?

Answer: Cirdan

Círdan tended the Grey Havens and was one of the first (if not THE first) to greet the Istari when they arrived in the Middle-earth. It was said that he was gifted with fore-sight and when Gandalf first came to the Havens, Círdan saw that "he is destined to greater deeds than mine", and surrendered the red ring of the elves to him.

He was a Teleri elf that did not pass into the West when Ulmo led the Teleri there, instead he remained in Beleriand, moved to the Isle of Balar, and finally founded Mithlond, the Grey Havens.
5. Leader of the elves in the war against Sauron at the end of the Second Age, friend of Elendil, son of Fingon, can you name the wielder of the mightiest spear of the Last Aliiance of Elves and Men?

Answer: Gil-Galad

Slain by Sauron at the end of the Second Age, Gil-Galad wielded a bright spear called Aiglos. He was the last High King of the Noldor in the Middle-earth, and the only son of High King Fingon. Gil-Galad lived long in a kingdom of his own, Lindon, but when Sauron came back to the Middle-earth, Gil-Galad felt he had no choice but to set out to defeat him.

Allied with Elendil, they forged what later became known as the "Last Alliance of Elves and Men". Seeking to overthrow the evil that Sauron was wreaking, Gil-Galad ventured into Mordor to defeat Sauron, but also laid down his life in the effort.
6. Also known as 'The Mariner', this elf sails the heavens with a Silmaril on his brow?

Answer: Earendil

Eärendil wears the Silmaril that Beren returned from Angband on his brow as he sails the sky in his ship Vingilot. He is also known as the patron of all the exiled elves. He came out of the sky to slay the dragon Ancalagon the Black in the War of Wrath, casting the fell beast down on the towers of Thangorodrim.

Eärendil is actually only half-elven, as his father, Tuor, was a mortal man. However, due to his pure soul, Eärendil was given a choice as to which race to belong to, and chose to become immortal as the elves. He wed Elwing, herself a quarter human, as she was the granddaughter of Beren and Luthien.
7. The Lady of Lórien, wife of Celeborn and keeper of Nenya, the white ring of the elves, was a great Elf. Can you name her?

Answer: Galadriel

Galadriel is deemed by Gimli Elf-Friend to be the fairest in the East, and Frodo of the Shire almost gives her the One Ring. But in the end, she too sails over the sea.

She was the youngest child of Finarfin and Eärwen, and came to the Middle-earth with her main purpose to oppose her uncle Fëanor of the Noldor. She was banned from returning to Valinor after the War of Wrath as it was deemed that she was a part of the Kinslaying. Since Galadriel had a grudge with Fëanor that she wanted to settle, she defied the Doom of Mandos and her pride kept her with the Noldor for the journey to the Middle-earth.
8. Smith of the three elven rings, also drew the signs on the doors to Moria:

Answer: Celebrimbor

The only rings not to be sullied by the touch of Sauron were the three elven-rings. Grandson of Fëanor the skilled, and son of Curufin, Celebrimbor inherited much of the craftsmanship of his ancestors. Indeed, he was the greatest smith of Eregion.
9. King of Gondolin - the hidden Kingdom, father-in-law of Tuor:

Answer: Turgon

One of the mightiest of the Firstborn, his was the first stronghold to fall to Morgoth. He was the second son of Fingolfin, and father of Idril. Before coming to Gondolin, Turgon dwelled in Nevrast.
10. There are three kindreds of elves that answered the call to Valinor. Name one:

Answer: Noldor

The three kindreds were the Eldar, the elves that made the great journey. The Avari were the unwilling, they did not answer the call to Valinor. Thus these three kindreds managed to see the light of the Two Trees. Of these, the Vanyar (for the most part) never returned to the Middle-earth, while the Noldor and the Teleri did, and many of their deeds are recorded.
11. Wrought the Palantíri, leader of the elven rebellion against the Valar:

Answer: Feanor

Came to the Middle-earth with his followers and remained in exile until his death, because of a terrible oath that he and his sons swore. He died storming the gates of Angband demanding the Silmarils from Morgoth, but was mortally wounded by Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs. So powerful was his spirit, that when he finally passed away, his body was consumed by flame.
12. Captain of the host of Gondolin, one of the firstborn, also, captain of the host of Rivendell:

Answer: Glorfindel

Glorfindel saved Frodo at the fords of Bruinen; he is one of the greatest elven lords, but never plays more than a minor role after the fall of Gondolin. There is dispute if it is the same Glorfindel, but nevertheless they do bear the same name... The first Glorfindel fell into an abyss fighting a Balrog following the fall of Gondolin, but as we saw with Gandalf, falling into an abyss doesn't necessarily mean that you die. Additionally, elf souls are reincarnated at the halls of Mandos, so he may have re-journeyed to the Middle-earth.
13. The Dark Elf, father of Maeglin, wrought Túrin's sword:

Answer: Eöl

Eöl was a skilful craftsman and master swordsmith. Ensnared Aredhel to take her as wife, and she bore him Maeglin. Later when Aredhel and Maeglin escaped, he pursued them and shot Aredhel with a poisoned dart, and as punishment for his crime, was cast over the cliffs of the Caragdûr.
14. Eldest son of Fëanor, also known as 'the tall':

Answer: Maedhros

The eldest of the Seven Sons of Fëanor, and considered to be their leader. In Valinor he swore the Oath of Fëanor, and followed his father back to Middle-earth, though of all Fëanor's sons, except perhaps Maglor, he seems to have regretted this the most.

He finally did lay his hands on a Silmaril, but for his sinful deeds it scorched his hands. He threw the Silmaril into a fissure in the earth, and then threw himself into the fissure.
15. Original elvish name of the elves:

Answer: Quendi

'Those who speak with voices' - this is the name the elves gave themselves as they awoke to find the world barren and silent, except for the washing of the waves at Cuiviénen.
