Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the hound of the Valar, who defeated the greatest wolf ever to live?

Answer: Huan

Huan was the faithful hound of Celegorm until Celegorm wronged Lúthien while in Nargothrond. From then on he was faithful to Beren and Lúthien, and aided them on the Quest of the Silmaril. He was fated to defeat the greatest wolf, which was not Sauron in wolf-form, but Carcharoth the 'Red Maw' who bit off Beren's hand. Huan defeated Sauron at the gates of Tol-in-Gaurhoth, because Sauron knew that Huan would not die until he encountered the greatest wolf that ever lived. Sauron tried to take this role, and took wolf-form, but fled in Vampire-form when defeated by Huan. Carcharoth was a wolf from the Pits of Angband, and bit off Beren's hand with the Silmaril in it.

The Silmaril's scorching heat drove Carcharoth crazy and this dread wolf ravaged Doriath. Huan managed to kill Carcharoth at the Hunting of the Wolf, but was also mortally wounded by him. Huan was permitted to speak three times before he died, and his words helped Lúthien on the Quest of the Silmaril.
2. Hathaldir was one of Barahir's outlaw companions. What surname did he gain while in the band?

Answer: the Young

Hathaldir was the youngest of Barahir's outlaw band. He was slain along with Barahir and all the remainder of his band, other than Beren who was away from camp that night, by an Orc band, on the highlands of Dorthonion. Gorlim, another of Barahir's companions, betrayed the position of the secret camp on Tarn Aeluin to Sauron, who promptly sent Orcs to kill them.
3. Which Ruling Steward of Gondor was the first to use the term 'Rohan' for the land of Calenardhon?

Answer: Hallas

Steward Hallas, son of Steward Cirion, was first ruler of Gondor while Cirion was fighting the Balchoth on the Field of Celebrant in 2510 T.A. He was present when the Oath of Cirion was spoken, and officially became the 13th Ruling Steward in 2567 T.A. when Cirion passed away. He was the first to call the land of the horse-lords 'Rohan' and the horse-lords themselves 'Rohirrim'.
4. Name the Golden-haired leader of the Third House of the Edain, after whom the house was named even though he was not its first leader:

Answer: Hador

Hador Lórindol, the Golden-haired leader of the House of Hador (Second House of the Edain) was the great-great-grandson of the first leader of the House, Marach. The House is often considered the most renowned of the three Houses, especially in the wars against Morgoth. He was made the first Lord of Dor-lómin by High King Fingolfin. Hador ruled until he was slain at Eithel Sirion at the Dagor Bragollach.

Hador was the first human bearer of the Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin. This helm was originally made of Azaghâl of Belegost, who embossed it with an emblem of Glaurung the Dragon. This helm was given to Maedhros as a gift who passed it to High-king Fingon. Fingon passed it on to Hador as a gift, as Hador was the only human that could bear its great weight. Hador made it an heirloom of his house, and the last known record of the Dragon-helm was when Túrin Turambar wore it to battle.
5. Who was the captain of King Théoden's guard at the time of Mithrandir's visit?

Answer: Háma

Háma was the loyal Captain of King Théoden's guard, who mistrusted Wormtongue but out of loyalty to his King did nothing about it. Háma would not let Gandalf and company enter the King's hall with their weapons, but permitted Gandalf's staff, which ultimately helped Gandalf break Saruman's spell over Théoden.

Háma was slain in the Battle of the Hornburg.
6. Herumor was a Númenórean that came to the Middle-earth during the rule of Ar-Pharazôn. Among which Middle-earth people did he become a mighty lord?

Answer: Harad

Herumor was a part of the Black Númenóreans, Númenóreans that became enamoured of Sauron when he was a 'prisoner' of Ar-Pharazôn. He removed to Harad along with another Númenórean called Fuinur, and they both became mighty among the Haradrim. Under their rule, the Haradrim would assail the newly founded Gondor, especially through the seas.

The Númenóreans brought with them much nautical knowledge and the Corsairs of Umbar were dreaded throughout the Third Age. Herumor was probably not his original name, but means 'Lord of the Dark' and he probably changed it because of his worship of Sauron.
7. Húrin (Thalion) was slain at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad after killing (at least) 70 orcs and maiming an unnumbered amount more.

Answer: False

Húrin was taken captive by Morgoth at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, standing alone at the end of the battle, overwhelmed by uncountable amounts of orcs, trolls, and balrogs. His men, the House of Hador, stood fifty strong, among them Húrin's brother Huor, and all fell in battle, Huor with a poisoned arrow in his eye, on the sixth day of battle.

Húrin stood alone before the troll-guard of Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs, and cast aside his shield. He wielded his axe two-handed, before the mighty armies of Morgoth. Each time he would slay an orc, he cried 'Aurë entuluva!' - 'day will come again!'. 70 times he uttered this cry before hundreds of orcs under Morgoth's command held him down, while Gothmog himself bound him and dragged him to Angband.
8. What is Húrin of Emyn Arnen known for?

Answer: founding the Stewardship of Gondor

Although Húrin may not have been the first Steward of Gondor, he certainly was the first to have done anything while in office to have it recorded in the Annals. He was Steward under King Minardil, and stayed in office when the King was slain by the Corsairs of Umbar, under the King's son - Telemnar. During the dark days of the Dark Plague, Steward Húrin took over many of the responsibilities of the King, as the new King Telemnar died of the Plague within two years of being crowned, along with the entire Royal family.
9. Who was the first leader of the Second House of the Edain?

Answer: Haldad

The men of the Second House of the Edain led a peaceful existance in the land of Thargelion, under the protection of Fëanor's son Caranthir. One day, a band of orcs descended upon these people and started to wreak havoc among them. Haldad took upon himself the mantle of leader and built a fortification between the rivers Gelion and Ascar. The men were besieged there for a long while until their food gave out. Haldad led an attack against the orcs, but was slain. His son Haldar led another attack to recover his father's body, and too was slain.

The House is named for Haldad's daughter Haleth, who led the people after her father's and brother's death, even after the forces of Caranthir freed them from the orc siege.
10. Name the first King of Rohan to die without an heir:

Answer: Helm

Helm was Rohan's ninth King, the son of King Gram. He was constantly in conflict with the Dunlendings, and usually victorious. One day, a claimant to the throne, but tainted with Dunlendish blood, by the name of Freca came to the Halls of Meduseld with an ultimatum. Freca demanded that Helm wed his daughter to Freca's son Wulf. Helm was so outraged that he smote Freca with his fist, and killed Freca instantly. Helm thus gained the surname 'Hammerhand'.

Wulf was declared an enemy of Rohan, and fled to the Dunlendings, where he spent four years. During that time, Wulf raised an army, and eventually marched on Edoras. Helm's eldest son, Haleth, was killed defending the gates, but Helm managed to flee to the mountains, whith his younger son Háma. Wulf claimed the throne, and set up court. Helm harried the men of Wulf throughout the time known as the long winter, going on guerilla sorties alone, especially after Háma was killed on a foraging party. One night, Helm never came back, but was seen from afar on a hilltop. When approached, it was found that Helm had frozen solid during the night.

The next Spring, Helm's nephew, Fréaláf, son of Helm's sister Hilde, reclaimed the throne of Rohan, with the help of Gondor. Fréaláf became Rohan's tenth rightful King, and the first King of the Second Line.
11. In which of the Great Wars of Beleriand was Huor son of Galdor slain?

Answer: Nirnaeth Arnoediad (Battle of Unnumbered Tears)

Huor was brother of Húrin Thalion, sons of Galdor and Hareth, and was the second-tallest of all the Edain (only his son Tuor was taller). Huor fought in a fringe battle of the Dagor Bragollach, although he was only 13 at the time. Huor was under the protection of Ulmo, and this Maia aided Huor and his brother, who were carried into the Hidden Kingdom, and were warmly welcomed by Turgon.

When Huor reached manhood, he wedded Rían, daughter of Belegund, and they concieved a son. But after only two months of marriage, Huor joined the mustering of armies, and went off to fight in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. The men of Dor-lómin fought bravely for five days, but on the sixth day, the tide of war turned in Morgoth's favour. Huor, Húrin and their men defended the Pass of Sirion, and enabled Turgon's forces to withdraw, but on the Fen of Serech they held their ground. There Huor met his death with a poisoned arrow through his eye.
12. What was the given name of King Hyarmendacil I of Gondor?

Answer: Ciryaher

When Ciryaher's father, King Ciryandil, was killed at the hands of the Haradrim, Ciryaher vowed to avenge him. He built a great army and conquered the land of Harad, totally. He then took the name Hyarmendacil, and ruled under that name. Hyarmendacil brought Gondor near the pinnacle of its power, and was the last of Gondor's four ship-kings. Hyarmendacil ruled Gondor for 134 years.
13. When Hirluin the Fair and his men marched to the defence of Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring, what colour were they clad in?

Answer: green

He led 300 men to the defence of Minas Tirith, and were the first to rush to the aid of Éomer and the Riders of Rohan in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Hirluin was slain in that battle.
14. What was the name of the kinsman of Aragorn Elessar that came to Aragorn's aid prior to the partaking of the Paths of the Dead?

Answer: Halbarad

Halbarad was a Ranger of the North, who was a kinsman of Aragorn. He rode with 29 of his fellow Rangers to the aid of Aragorn, and joined him just prior to the traversing of the Paths of the Dead. He gave Aragorn the black standard, to which Aragorn later called to him all of the soldiers of the dead. Halbarad met his death bravely, at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
