Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ossë was a Maia who was a spirit of the sea. Knowing this, which Vala was he a vassal of?

Answer: Ulmo

Ulmo was the Lord of the Seas, and Ossë was his aide. Ossë wed Uinen, Lady of the Seas, and it was said that she was the only one who could really calm him down when his mood got stormy. Ossë was briefly lured away from the service to Ulmo by Melkor, but Uinen prevailed over her husband and succeeded in bringing him back.

In that time, however, the seas were very wanton and many ships were said to have been lost.
2. When leaving Crickhollow and entering the Old Forest, the four hobbits in "Lord of the Rings" are set upon by an evil tree with evil intent. The name for the tree was "Old Man ______"?

Answer: Willow

Living by the River Withywindle, Old Man Willow was the heart of the evil that lurked in the Old Forest. Luckily for the hobbits, Tom Bombadil was there in the area to save them from Old Man Willow's leafy clutch. As Tom described him: "his heart was rotten, but his strength was green; and he was cunning and a master of winds, and his song and thought ran through the woods on both sides of the river..."
3. The Watcher in the Water killed this dwarf, uncle of Gimli and a companion of Bilbo on his quest to the Lonely Mountain. What was his name?

Answer: Óin

Óin was the older brother of Glóin, and one of Thorin Oakenshield's thirteen companions on his quest to kill Smaug. Having survived the Battle of Five Armies (where Thorin perished), Óin grew wealthy but restless. Yearning for adventure, he followed his friend Balin and helped him reclaim Moria. Moria was a bit much for these dwarves to handle for too long, and Óin perished by the West-gate, taken by the same Watcher in the Water that attacked Frodo not too many years later.
4. Oromë the Vala was a hunter, and he ranged far and wide throughout Aman and the Middle-earth. What was he the first to find?

Answer: Elves

Oromë was an Ainu, one of the Lords of the Valar and, indeed, one of the Aratar, and the spouse of Vána. Oromë was also known as the Lord of the Forests, and the Trumpeter, due to the great horn Valaróma that he bore. When travelling through the Middle-earth, Oromë happened upon the Eldar, just freshly awakened, on the shores of Cuiviénen.

It was he who summoned the Elves to follow him back to Valinor.
5. Ostoher was the seventh King of Gondor. What was, perhaps, his greatest achievement?

Answer: Rebuilding Minas Anor

Ostoher's name mean's 'fortress lord', and this was likely given to him because he was the King of Gondor who rebuilt Minas Anor (later - Minas Tirith) and made it his summer residence. Ostoher ruled Gondor for 81 years which were largely uneventful, save towards the end of his rule.

At that time, Gondor was attacked by Easterlings. Ostoher was quite old at the time, and his son, Tarostar, was at the helm of Gondor's armies in defending the realm.
6. One of three survivors of the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, who brought back the shards of Elendil's sword?

Answer: Ohtar

Described as Isildur's squire, Ohtar escaped the ambush that befell Isildur's company at the Gladden Fields and was charged with saving the shards of Narsil, Elendil's sword, from the marauding orcs. He escaped the battle with one other companion and made his way to Rivendell where he delivered the heirloom that was eventually passed down to Aragorn.
7. Oakenshield was a surname that Thorin II acquired in battle. Which battle gained him this illustrious name?

Answer: Battle of Azanulbizar

When the Goblin King Azog killed Thrór and branded his severed head, that was all the cassius belli that the dwarves needed to muster an all-out war against the orcs of the Misty Mountains. It was in the final battle that young Thorin, grandson of King Thrór earned his name.

Azanulbizar was the valley before the East-gate of Moria, and the battle ensued there. Thorin's shield had shattered in battle, and he had no way of defending himself. In desperation, he hewed off a branch of an oak tree and used that as a shield gaining his name. The dwarves were victorious, but not without great losses. The goblin-horde had been broken, but the dwarves refused to re-enter Moria.
8. Odo is one loud outspoken hobbit, even when at his cousin Bilbo's birthday party. Having his large and extra-hairy feet on top of the table at the private event to cap off the celebrations, what is his surname?

Answer: Proudfoot

Bilbo Baggins and Odo Proudfoot were cousins, and Bilbo invited him to the exclusive event for 144 that he had at the end of his birthday party where he gave his farewell speech. Bilbo claimed that the plural of the last name was "Proudfoots", but Odo loudly insisted that it is "Proudfeet".

Odo had a grandson Sancho who went about Bag-End knocking holes in the walls looking for hidden treasure and 'jools'.
9. Olwë, elf Lord of Alqualondë, is the younger brother of which famous elven king?

Answer: Thingol

Elwë and Olwë were the joint kings of the Teleri elves, and they led them from Cuiviénen to Aman. However, along the way, Elwë met Melian the Maia and fell in love with her. Spellbound, Elwë was not found for many years, so Olwë took it upon himself to lead the large part of the Teleri (now Falmari) into Aman.

In Aman, Olwë is lord over Alqualondë and Tol Eressëa, and his Falmari are gifted shipwrights.
10. Finally, the great Gandalf's original name was one which started with an 'O'. Which of these was it?

Answer: Olórin

Gandalf was a Maia said to possess great wisdom. In his youth, probably in Aman, he was known as Olórin. When he came to the Middle-earth along with the rest of the Istari, Círdan was said to be there to greet them. Círdan recognized Curumo's (Saruman's) strength and power, but also recognized the wisdom in Olórin and chose to give him Narya, the red elven ring.
