Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the book begins, Jenny and Laura are fighting over a toy. What is it?

Answer: Skipping Rope

Jenny got the skipping rope for her birthday and Laura is determined to take it from her.
Laura is a spoiled selfish brat and never misses a chance to be mean to Jenny.
2. What does Laura steal from her mother near the beginning of the story?

Answer: Two pennies

Mary has put four pennies aside to feed the gas meter and discovers two of them are missing.
Eventually Laura admits to taking them and hiding them in her shoe.
3. Who is the "brainbox" at school who Laura tricks into doing her extra work for her?

Answer: Helen

Laura is late for school and the Headmistress sets her sums and lines to do as punishment. Laura tricks the class 'brain' Helen into doing them all for her and gets away with it.
4. Apart from a dress, what does Laura get for Christmas 1933 "from Santa"?

Answer: Stockings

Laura has left school and is starting her first job after Christmas so she is very pleased to get her first pair of long stockings for a present. It would be "dead embarrassing" to turn up for work in schoolgirl's socks.
5. At the New Years Eve party, Amy does her "turn" - she sings "If I could shimmy like my sister _____" who?

Answer: Kate

Amy has the party goers in fits of laughter with her Shimmy. She is as round as she is tall, and when she shimmies the room shakes! After her dance Stan and Seamus lift her up and treat the whole room to a view of her "blue fleecy lined bloomers."
6. Why is Mary on bad terms with her father Joe at the start of the story?

Answer: He married Celia

Mary hates Celia, the woman her father married.
Mary's mother had not been gone very long, and Celia is younger than Mary and is a "trollop." She took Joe in and 'conned' him into marriage before her true colours started to show.

Joe regrets ever meeting her but doesn't see anything he can do about his situation - he is stuck with Celia.
7. Who does Celia introduce Laura to at the dance?

Answer: Gary

Celia plans on using Laura to hurt Mary and decides to 'lead her astray,' so she persuades her to start smoking and takes her to a dance hall.
She introduces Gary to keep Laura occupied while Celia slips outside with her fancy man Charlie.
Laura and Gary fall in love and in the end they support each other and get out of Celia's blackmailing clutches together.
8. Who is Charlie's mother?

Answer: Hattie

Poor Hattie gets the shock of her life when Amy and Molly turn up on her doorstep to tell her that her son, Charlie has got Celia "in the family way."
The friends don't tell her that Celia is married to Joe, they say that Celia's family are religious and have thrown her on the streets because of the shame of her being unmarried and pregnant and hope that Hattie will take her in and make Charlie "do the right thing by her."
All they want is to get Celia out of Joe's life, but they don't see why Charlie should get off scott free.
9. How does Mary get Celia to get out of bed and open the door to her when she goes round to Joe's to evict her?

Answer: Breaks a window

Mary is determined to get Celia out of the house that was her mother's home. When Celia refuses to get out of bed and open the door, Mary smashes a window.
All her mother's old friends and neighbours gather round armed with stiff brooms and back Mary up as she gets Celia out of the house, then they follow her down the street to make sure she is really gone.
10. Who slaps Celia's face?

Answer: Laura

Once Mary and the rest of the family know all about Celia's attempts to blackmail Laura over the smoking etc, they get together and work out how to get her out of Joe's life for good.
When Mary and Laura go round to throw Celia out of Joe's house, Laura slaps her face when Celia calls Mary names.
