Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the S. in the author's name stand for?

Answer: Simon

Morgenstern's name is mentioned in Chapter 7 - "The Wedding". Ironically, the name Simon in Hebrew means to hear, to be heard.
2. If Morgenstern had actually written the unabridged version of "The Princess Bride", which is most likely when the book was published?

Answer: Before 1882

William "Billy" Goldman was born in 1931 and his father read the book to him when he was around 10 years old, which means the book was published before 1941. William Goldman's 'abridged' book was written and published between 1971 and 1973 because in the beginning story he mentions being 40 years old at the time.

In Chapter 7 - "The Wedding" Goldman mentions that Morgenstern's book was before Frank Baum wrote "The Wizard of Oz" which was published in 1900 and in Chapter 8 - "Honeymoon" Goldman says that Morgenstern's book was before Frank Stockton's short story "Lady or the Tiger" which was first published in 1882. So we do not know the exact year but we can gather that it was before 1882.
3. How does S. Morgenstern's book begin?

Answer: "The year Buttercup was born, the most beautiful woman in the world was a French scullery maid named Annette."

William Goldman shares in Chapter 1 - "The Bride" that the chapter is totally intact, meaning he had done no abridging to it.
4. In Morgenstern's pages when we read about Queen Bella, Prince Humperdinck's stepmother, going to Guilder with an invitation for Princess Noreena to join the royal family in Florin for a celebration, which took longer?

Answer: Princess Noreena packing

We are told in Chapter 3 - "The Courtship" that it took 11 pages for Queen Bella to pack, 23 pages for Princess Noreena to pack, 12 for her to unpack but just 1 page for the two royal ladies to return to Florin.
5. In S. Morgenstern's book, what is the longest single chapter?

Answer: Four - "The Preparations"

This is mentioned on the first and only page of Chapter 4 - "The Preparations".
6. In which chapter does S. Morgenstern dedicate eighteen pages to the cures the miracle man used to improve King Lotharon?

Answer: Four - "The Preparations"

William Goldman also mentions in Chapter 4 - "The Preparations" that Morgenstern hated doctors and didn't to much like when they outlawed miracle men from working in Florin, which is where Morgenstern is from.
7. Which of the following best describes S. Morgenstern's version of the ravine floor reunion between Westley and Buttercup?

Answer: Untold by the man himself

A wise man once said something like, "It will never mean as much to them". In Chapter 5 - "The Announcement" S. Morgenstern seems to agree. Nothing that could be written would have captured that moment, therefore nothing was written.
8. After Inigo reflects on the anguish of fleeting glory, how does S. Morgenstern say he got back to Florin City?

Answer: He finds a fisherman who sails him back to Florin City

When the job went wrong you went back to the beginning. In Chapter 6 - "The Festivities" that is what exactly what Inigo did, the beginning was the Thieves Quarter and that was located in Florin City.
9. What ingredients does S. Morgenstern's story have Inigo and Fezzik collecting for the Miracle Pill?

Answer: Frog dust and mud

We've all heard the saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover", well, in Chapter 7 - "The Wedding" we can learn not to judge a Miracle Pill by its chocolate coating.
10. How does S. Morgenstern end his book?

Answer: "And the night behind them was filled with the crescendoing sound of pursuit..."

S. Morgenstern's ending supports the saying "life isn't fair" as he closes his story in Chapter 8 - "Honeymoon" with no "happily ever after".
