Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The calendar that is currently in use in "The Wheel of Time" books is recorded in NE (New Era) years. What is the name of the calendar?

Answer: The Farede Calendar

Although created by Uren din Jubai Soaring Gull of the Sea Folk, its use was popularized by the Panarch Farede of Tarabon.
2. The 'New Era' calendar began recording dates as of the end of which war(s)?

Answer: The War of the Hundred Years

The War of the Hundred Years began after Artur Hawkwing's death, as his empire was carved up by power-hungry rulers. The date of the war's end was arbitrarily decided upon.
3. What were the dates of the Aiel War?

Answer: 976 - 978 NE

Only four clans of thirteen came over the Dragonwall to punish Laman, King of Cairhien, for his sin of cutting down Avendoraldera. To the Aiel, it was a punishment, but to the 'wetlanders' it was a full-blown war.
4. The calendar which was devised by Toma dur Ahmid recorded years AB. It began recording years approximately two hundred years after what event?

Answer: The last male Aes Sedai's death

Called the 'Toman Calendar', it recorded years AB (After the Breaking of the World).
5. In the calendar created by Tiam of Gazar, each year was recorded as FY. What does FY stand for?

Answer: Free Year

So many records had been destroyed during the Trolloc Wars, that nobody could be certain of the date AB. Thus, the new calendar was proposed, calling every year since the end of the Trolloc threat a Free Year.
6. Artur Hawkwing attempted to establish a calendar based on his rule. Years were recorded as FF, which stood for what?

Answer: From the Founding

As with most things from Artur's reign, the calendar was not used as it would remind the rulers following Artur that they could never be as powerful as he had been.
7. In the 'New Era' calendar, how many days are there in a week?

Answer: 10

The 10-day week is mainly just for time-recording purposes - people in 'Randland' live on a day-to-day basis, from festival day to festival day, not taking such arbitrary consdirations as 'weeks' into account.
8. In the 'New Era' calendar, how many months are there in a year?

Answer: 13

Even though the calendar records days, weeks, months, and years, to most of the population of 'Randland,' time is measured by festival days, solstices and equinoxes. Officially, a month in the Farede Calendar is 28 days.
9. What is the holiday called that falls on the shortest day of the year?

Answer: Feast of Lights

The Feast of Lights actually falls over two days, the last day of the year (the shortest day) and the first day of the new year. High Chasaline is held on the 12th day of the first month (called Taisham), and is a celebration of good fortune. Low Chasaline is held on the 18th day of Maigdhal (the ninth month), and it is a day of fasting. Sunday is the longest day of the year, occurring during Amadaine (the seventh month).
10. In what year was Rand al'Thor born?

Answer: 978 NE

He was born on the slopes of Dragonmount at the end of the Aiel War.
