Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of readers' favourite characters in the "Discworld" series is a rather incompetent and cowardly wizard. What is his name?

Answer: Rincewind

The rankings for wizards from the Unseen University range from one to eight. Rincewind is on level zero. The highest that he has ever scored in an examination is 2%, and that was for spelling his name correctly. Although it is not the best Rincewind story, I like "The Last Continent" because I find the way that Pratchett parodies Australia very amusing.
2. The wizard has a companion, Luggage, who accompanies and helps him in his many adventures and misadventures. How does Luggage get around?

Answer: Luggage has dozens of little feet

Luggage is a trunk made from sapient pearwood and, like the Tardis, is much bigger inside than outside. It arrived in Ankh-Morpork, with Twoflower, the tourist, in the first book and when he goes back to his home world he gives it to Rincewind. It is totally devoted to the wizard and follows him on its many little feet wherever he goes, often getting him out of sticky situations.
3. A coven of witches on earth is usually 13. How many witches make a coven on Discworld?

Answer: 3

We first see the witches as a group in "Wyrd Sisters". They represent the three witches in Macbeth, to which the story owes slight homage; however, the witches in Macbeth didn't have dialogue like this.
"As the cauldron bubbled an eldritch voice shrieked: 'When shall we three meet again?'
There was a pause.
Finally another voice said, in far more ordinary tones: 'Well, I can do next Tuesday.'"
The three also personify the classic archetypes of maid, mother and crone.
4. What is the name of the witch who represents the mother figure in "The Wyrd Sisters", the first book that features these wonderful characters?

Answer: Nanny Ogg

Nanny Ogg is one of the most straightforward characters on Discworld. She is a grandmother who loves a drink and a good laugh. It is she who gets the most out of life. Her large family is not a burden to her; her daughters-in-law do all the housework, washing, ironing, cooking and all the men and boys do her bidding as well.
5. Which of her special powers does Granny Weatherwax use to make sure that she knows all that is going on in her neighbourhood?

Answer: She 'borrows' the body of a bird or animal

Granny Weatherwax is the dominant figure in the coven, in fact, she is the most powerful witch on Discworld, although Magrat is a better doctor and Nanny Ogg is a better midwife. Granny's main areas of expertise are 'headology', 'borrowing' and brewing potions.

She 'borrows' the bodies of birds and animals, travelling with them for a time, using their senses and other attributes. She repays them with food and shelter. The locals know not to mistreat animals as Granny might be in the mind of the animal or watching from close by.
6. In "Wyrd Sisters", when King Verence I is murdered by his brother, Felmet, his son, Tomjon, is spirited away by the witches and goes to live with a travelling theatre troupe to protect him from his uncle. When Felmet is killed why doesn't the prince become king?

Answer: Tomjon doesn't want to be king

At first Tomjon is bewildered as he didn't know his true origins, but then he realises that he can be a ruler and is delighted at the thought of the power that he will have. He tries on the crown and realises that the only sensation he feels is its weight. He decides that he wants to stay with the theatre group and its members who have become his family. The crown is then offered to his half-brother, who has been the Court Fool, but now becomes Verence II.
7. The Librarian at Unseen University was turned into an animal by a magical accident in 'The Light Fantastic' that altered his genes. What kind of animal is he now?

Answer: Orangutan

The librarian, whose name the other wizards either don't know or have forgotten, has refused all attempts to turn him back to a human. He has found that having 300 pounds of muscle, large yellow fangs, a strong desire to protect his territory and a hair-trigger temper mean that his department never has budget cuts.

He also finds that having the ability to climb to the highest shelves, and to use his very long arms to both file and extract books, makes his job much easier.
8. Sam Vimes, Commander of the City Watch, sees very clearly that the realities of life are very harsh, which makes him a rather depressed character. What is his condition, the opposite of drunk, usually only achieved on Discworld by drinking Klatchian coffee, called?

Answer: Knurd

The word 'knurd' is, of course, the opposite of drunk.
Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch was born in extreme poverty. He enlisted in the Watch as a young man and gradually rose through the ranks to his present position. His rise was accompanied by increased cynicism and frustration and he has become a frequent drinker to deaden his pain.
9. The Nac Mac Feegles, with their shaggy red hair, blue tattoos and blue paint in their clan patterns and wearing leather loincloths or kilts are among the fiercest warriors on Discworld. What makes it so amazing that they are such successful fighters?

Answer: They are 6 inches tall

Terry Pratchett, when asked why the Nac Mac Feegles are so insanely courageous when they are so tiny had this to say: he explained that they think that they are dead already and are now in their equivalent to Valhalla. They believe their constant drinking and fighting are quite normal as this is their idea of heaven.
10. In "Reaper Man", Death discovers that he, too, has a limited temporal existence. Where does he go when he leaves his domain to wait for his own end?

Answer: Miss Renata Flitworth's farm

The scene where Death first comes to Miss Flitworth's farm is very funny. He is unable to give her his name so after several abortive attempts they settle on 'Bill Door'. He agrees to work for sixpence a week. His employer is rather surprised that when he scythes the hay-meadow he does it one blade at a time, but as he finishes in record time she feels she should not comment.
