1. What game is Bobby Jones playing at the beginning of the novel?

Answer: Golf

The mystery starts in Marchbolt, Wales. Bobby Jones is playing golf with his friend, Doctor Thomas. He comes across a dying man at the base of a cliff. The man's dying words are "Why didn't they ask Evans?"
2. Who does Bobby Jones meet on a train journey?

Answer: Lady Frances Derwent

There was a photograph of a beautiful woman in the dead man's pocket. Bobby leaves the dying man with a stranger while he goes to assist his father, the Vicar of Marchbolt. The stranger introduces himself as Roger Bassington-ffrench. Lady Frances is a childhood friend of Bobby's. The dead man is apparently an Alex Pritchard.
3. Where is the job that Bobby is offered?

Answer: Buenos Aires

The inquest on Alex Pritchard is held. It is possible that he committed suicide, or accidentally walked over the cliff. Mrs Amelia Cayman, Pritchard's sister, tells how her brother had recently returned from the East. Mr and Mrs Cayman come to see Bobby, to see if Pritchard had left any message for his sister. Later, Bobby writes to them, telling them the man's last words. Bobby is offered the job, a thousand pounds a year.

However he intends to take up his friend's, Badger Beadon's, offer of running a garage. Badger's ventures never seem to work out.
4. What sort of poison was in Bobby's beer?

Answer: Morphia

Bobby goes on a picnic by himself. His beer is poisoned. There was eight grains of morphia in it, Bobby is lucky to be alive. Bobby realises the picture in Pritchard's pocket had been changed to a photograph of Mrs Cayman. It must have been done by the mysterious Roger Bassington-ffrench.
5. Whereabouts in England does Roger Bassington-ffrench live?

Answer: Hampshire

It seems possible that Mrs Cayman might not be Pritchard's sister. The Caymans tried to get rid of Bobby by giving him a job opportunity. When this failed, they tried to poison him. Bobby and Frankie have to find out more about Roger Bassington-ffrench.
6. What is the home of Henry Bassington-ffrench called?

Answer: Merroway Court

Frankie introduces Bobby to Doctor George Arbuthnot. She plans to have a car accident near the home of the Bassington-ffrenches. Doctor Arbuthnot will be nearby and insist that Frankie must stay with the Bassington-ffrenches for a few days. The accident is staged and goes off without a hitch. Merroway Court is the home of Roger Bassington-ffrench's brother, Henry.
7. What nationality is Doctor Nicholson?

Answer: Canadian

Henry Bassington-ffrench's wife is called Sylvia, and they have a son, Tommy. Sylvia seems to appreciate Frankie's company. Roger Bassington-ffrench lives at Merroway Court too. Frankie thinks Henry might be a drug fiend. Roger would like his brother in a nursing home, run by a Doctor Nicholson.
8. Who comes to see Bobby at the Angler's Arms?

Answer: Moira Nicholson

Sylvia mentions that the photograph of Alex Pritchard looked like an Alan Carstairs, whom she knew slightly. Frankie is convinced the dead man is Carstairs and not Pritchard. She meets the mysterious Doctor Nicholson and his wife, Moira. Bobby comes down to see Frankie, as her chauffeur. Later he goes exploring Doctor Nicholson's nursing home, The Grange.

He meets a woman who looks terrified. Later, the woman comes to see Bobby. She is Moira Nicholson, and Bobby recognises her as the original of Carstairs' photograph.

She tells Bobby that she thinks her husband is in love with Sylvia Bassington-ffrench and wants to kill her. Her husband is trying to get Henry Bassington-ffrench into the Grange as a patient.
9. How does Henry Bassington-ffrench die?

Answer: Shot

Roger thinks his brother should go to the Grange. He admits to Frankie that he removed the picture of Moira from Carstairs' pocket. He didn't know it was Carstairs, as a handkerchief covered his face. Frankie tells him that she thinks Doctor Nicholson is a dangerous criminal. Carstairs was carrying around the picture of Mrs Cayman for a reason.
10. Where does Henry Bassington-ffrench die?

Answer: Study

Sylvia is determined her husband should go to the Grange, after confronting her husband about his addiction. Henry apparently commits suicide; he feels it is the best way out. Doctor Nicholson comes to Merroway Court shortly after the suicide.
11. How did John Savage commit suicide?

Answer: Overdose of chloral

John Savage was a good friend of Alan Carstairs. He left seven hundred thousand pounds to a Mrs Templeton, whom he met during a ship voyage. Mrs Templeton was a married woman. Savage committed suicide when a doctor told him he had cancer. Carstairs wasn't happy with the will. Carstairs said he was going somewhere called Chipping Somerton.
12. What school did Roger Bassington-ffrench go to?

Answer: Oxford

Bobby and Frankie are tricked and tied up. They are convinced Doctor Nicholson is responsible for their imprisonment. Bobby realises it is someone impersonating Nicholson - Roger Bassington-ffrench. Badger Beadon rescues Frankie and Bobby.
13. Where does Gladys Evans - or Gladys Roberts - work now?

Answer: The vicarage

Everything begins to fall into place. John Savage did not make the will - it was Roger Bassington-ffrench pretending to be Savage. Evans was the house parlourmaid at the Templetons'. She saw the real Savage; this was why she was not asked to witness the will. Gladys now works at the Vicarage, Bobby's home.
14. Who committed the murders?

Answer: Roger Bassington-ffench

Roger writes to Frankie. He has escaped justice. Moira assisted him with the murders, although she did not actually perform them. He explains how they killed John Savage, Alan Carstairs and Henry Bassington-ffrench.
