Literature Quiz: Wuthering Heights: 10 Questions | Bronte Sisters

This is one of my favorite novels, written by the wonderful Emily Brontė one year before her death. None of the questions have to do with any of the movie versions. Enjoy! P.S. Catherine refers to the first generation, Cathy refers to her daughter.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The main female character, Catherine Earnshaw, is Heathcliff's only friend after Mr. Earnshaw dies. What is the name of Catherine's brother, who nothing short of detests Heathcliff?

Answer: Hindley

After Mr. Earnshaw brings Heathcliff home from a trip, Hindley immediately dislikes him. Catherine, however, is instantly friends with him, and they constantly explore the surrounding marshy area. However, after Mr. Earnshaw dies, Hindley takes possession of the house, and kicks Heathcliff out to become a servant, while Catherine still hangs out with him occasionally.
2. Nelly, the housekeeper first at Wuthering Heights, then at Thrushcross Grange, then back at Wuthering Heights, is telling the story to Mr. Lockwood. Why is Mr. Lockwood able to sit and listen to the story for so long?

Answer: He is sick in bed

Mr. Lockwood, while staying at Thrushcross Grange, develops a severe cold, and Nelly, the current housekeeper there, begins to tell her story, after Lockwood's inquiries, about Heathcliff and the others at Wuthering Heights.
3. Which of the following describes Catherine's feelings towards Heathcliff?

Answer: She loves him, but does not want to marry him

Although Catherine is, in fact, madly in love with Heathcliff, she feels that because of Hindley placing him so low, she would be degrading herself to marry him, and so goes for her friend at Thrushcross Grange, Edgar Linton, instead.
4. What is the name of Isabella and Heathcliff's son?

Answer: Linton

Isabella is temporarily obsessed with Heathcliff, thinking she is in love with him. However, after they are married, she realizes how horrible he really is, and runs away from him. But, soon afterwards she has a son, whom she names Linton, which is weird because that is her maiden name.
5. How does Catherine die?

Answer: Having Cathy, following an unnamed sickness

After Edgar and Heathcliff have a sort of falling out, Catherine refuses to leave her room for days, not eating or drinking anything, which causes months of a slowly worsening sickness not named in the book. She dies a few hours after having her daughter, whom Edgar names Catherine, but calls Cathy.
6. How do Cathy and Linton first meet?

Answer: He is brought to Thrushcross Grange to live

Originally, Edgar has Linton brought to Thrushcross Grange to live, after the death of his mother, Isabella. However, Heathcliff soon finds out about his son, and has him brought to Wuthering Heights the next day.
7. Where is Heathcliff when Catherine is pouring her heart out to Nelly about Edgar?

Answer: Right outside the door

Heathcliff sadly happens to be right outside the door, listening to every word Catherine and Nelly say. He is soon so deeply saddened and hurt by what he hears that he leaves, not to return for three years.
8. Who does Cathy end up with in the end?

Answer: Hareton

Heathcliff first forces Linton and Cathy to marry, so he can get Thrushcross Grange when Edgar dies, but, since Linton is sickly, he soon dies, and Cathy and Hareton, Hindley's son, fall in love, and it is implied that they get married at the end of the book.
9. What is the name of the area of England where the story takes place?

Answer: Yorkshire

The story takes place in the marshes of Yorkshire, much like where the author, Emily Brontė, lived for most of her life. In fact, much of Wuthering Heights is based on Brontė's life, which is kind of depressing.
10. What happens to Heathcliff at the end of the book?

Answer: He dies, and his "ghost" wanders the marshes with Catherine's

Presumably from a lack of a will to live, Heathcliff dies not long before the end of the story, and it is said his and Catherine's ghosts can be seen walking along the marshes together.
