Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book opened with four pilots running a scenario in the simulator. Who was not in the simulator at the beginning of the book?

Answer: Wedge Antilles

Corran Horn and Ooryl Qrygg were wingmates in the simulator. They were joined by Nawara Ven and Rhysati Ynr to make up a flight of four fighters.

Tycho Celchu was the anonymous pilot flying against the trainees. Tycho had a long and distinguished career as an Alliance pilot, and piloting skills were on par with Wedge's.
2. Rogue Squadron moved to the planet Talasea to be closer to Coruscant. Imperial Intelligence was able to deduce their location, and sent a strike team to infiltrate the base and sabotage it. Which pilot was killed in the Imperial attack on the squadron's base?

Answer: Lujayne Forge

Rogue Squadron moved their base from Folor to Talasea to be closer to Coruscant when the time came to take the capitol. Kirtin Loor, an Imperial Intelligence agent, and Corran Horn's personal enemy, figured out where the Rogues were hiding. A strike team was sent to sabotage the base. The base's sentries were killed, along with Lujayne Forge, who was murdered in her sleep.

The loss of Lujayne hit the squadron hard. She had been the emotional glue and soul of the squadron, and the fact that she was killed in her sleep rather than fighting made it even more difficult to take.
3. The "X-Wing" novel series was inspired by the "X-Wing" computer game series. According to the books and the computer games, how many pilots make up a squadron?

Answer: Twelve

Each pair of fighters was a set of wingmates. Four fighters made up a flight, and twelve fighters were a squadron. Rogue Squadron was made up of three flights, aptly named one flight, two flight, and three flight. Corran Horn was Rogue Nine, commanding three flight, which consisted of him, Ooryl Qrygg (Rogue Ten), Lujayne Forge (Rogue Eleven), and Andoorni Hui (Rogue Twelve).
4. Which planet was code-named "Blackmoon" by the New Republic and Rogue Squadron?

Answer: Borleias

Code names were often used in military situations to hide the real names of targets from enemy intelligence. "Blackmoon" was the code name for Borleias. The First Battle of Borleias was the newly-reformed Rogue Squadron's first major defeat. The Second Battle of Borleias was one of their greatest victories.

Coruscant was the seat of the galactic government, and a planet-wide city near the centre of the galaxy.

Sullus was the Sullistan's homeworld. Sullus was where the Rebel Alliance gathered before launching the Battle of Endor. Lando Calrissian's co-pilot during the Battle of Endor was a Sullistan.

Yavin IV was the moon of Yavin that the Rebel Alliance launched their fighters from during the Battle of Yavin, in which Luke Skywalker destroyed the first Death Star.
5. Who was the captain of the freighter "Pulsar Skate"?

Answer: Mirax Terrik

Mirax Terrik was a childhood friend of Wedge's and began helping the Rogues by running supplies to them.

Booster Terrik was Mirax's father, and Liat Tsayv was Mirax's co-pilot. Han Solo was just some Corellian smuggler.

Despit both being Corellian, Mirax and Corran Horn did not get along. Mirax's was a smuggler, like her father, while Corran Horn came from law enforcement, like his father. To make matters worse, their respective fathers were personal enemies. Hal Horn, Corran's father, was responsible for putting Booster Terrik on the prison world of Kessel.

Despite the tension between the two families, Corran and Mirax eventually learned to live peacefully with each other.
6. The New Republic pilots had different nicknames for the different classes of TIE starcraft. Which kind of TIEs were nicknamed "Squints"?

Answer: TIE Interceptors

The Rogues had their own slang terms for each of the commonly encountered Imperial spacecraft.

TIE Fighters were "Eyeballs", TIE Bombers were "Dupes", TIE Interceptors were "Squints", and TIE Advances were "Brights".

While TIE Fighters, Bombers, and Interceptors were all common enough, TIE Advances were rare and dangerous. The TIE Advance, or TIE Avenger, was introduced in the "Star Wars: TIE Fighter" computer game, which served as an inspiration for this novel series. While most Imperial ships were inferior to their Rebel counterparts on account of having no shields, the TIE Advance gave Imperial pilots more than a fighting chance. They came with four laser cannons, shields, and had speeds faster than Rebel A-Wings. Darth Vader had a custom-made TIE Advance made for himself, which he used during the Battle of Yavin.
7. The New Republic was not nearly as human-centric as the Imperial Government and Military. Many different species were able to participate in the same fighter squadrons. What was one species that was not in Rogue Squadron during this book?

Answer: Wookiee

The full roster at the beginning of the book looked like this:

Rogue One/Leader: Wedge Antilles (human)
Rogue Two: Peshk Vri'syk (bothan)
Rogue Three: Nawara Ven (twi'lek)
Rogue Four: Bror Jace (human)
Rogue Five: Gavin Darklighter (human)
Rogue Six: Riv Shiel (shistavanen)
Rogue Seven: Rhysati Ynr (human)
Rogue Eight: Erisi Dlarit (human)
Rogue Nine: Corran Horn (human)
Rogue Ten: Ooryl Qrygg (gand)
Rogue Eleven: Lujayne Forge (human)
Rogue Twelve: Andoorni Hui (rodian)

There were no wookiees in Rogue Squadron.
8. When Wedge reformed the legendary Rogue Squadron, what kind of pilots did he look for?

Answer: The most skilled

Rogue Squadron was originally formed by Luke Skywalker after the Battle of Yavin. It comprised the best pilots in the Rebel Alliance, including Wedge Antilles, Wes Jenson, Derek Klivian. They quickly gained a reputation for pulling off near-impossible missions, and were respected and feared by Imperial fighter squadrons. Rogue Squadron notably flew Snowspeeders during the Battle of Hoth.

Wedge wanted to rebuild the squadron to its former glory, two years after the Battle of Endor, and started by recruiting the best pilots he could find.
9. All the blasters in the "Star Wars" universe seemed to have two settings. What were they?

Answer: Kill and Stun

Most blasters in Star Wars have two settings: kill and stun. Lethal blaster bolts are often brightly coloured beams that are seen plenty in the movies. Stun emits a set of blue rings that merely knock out the target. Stormtroopers on the Tantive IV set their blasters to stun when they shot Princess Leia.

When the Rebel Base was attacked, Corran told Gavin to set the blaster from its first setting (stun) to its second (kill).
10. The standard X-Wing fighter came with four laser cannons which could be linked in different ways to give different firing rates and damage. Which one of these settings could not be chosen for the X-wing laser cannons?

Answer: Three-at-a-time

These laser-linking options are a direct port from the "X-Wing" computer game. Each laser cannon cycled at a specific speed. Firing them one-at-a-time (single fire) would increase the firing rate of the X-Wing, but it had much less impact on the target. Four at a time, or "quad lasers" was used on close-range targets with a sure shot.

It was meant to take out enemies thoroughly. Firing two lasers at once (dual fire) was a compromise between the two extreme settings.
