Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the sickness that was killing off Coruscant's alien population?

Answer: Krytos Virus

Isard had the Krytos virus created by General Derricote. Derricote formerly ran the base on Borleias that the Rogues took in "Rogue Squadron". He was also a keen scientist, and was brought to Imperial Center (Coruscant) to create the virus. Derricote was unable to create a virus that came close enough to Isard's specifications, and he was put into Lusankya as punishment.

Many non-humans disliked the Empire because it was a human-centric government. Isard planned to let the Rebel Alliance take Coruscant, but only after she had infected a significant population with her virus. The virus only affected certain non-human species, and could be cured by bacta. This was meant to cause tension between the humans in the Rebel Alliance and their non-human allies, while simultaneously bankrupting the Rebel Alliance by forcing them to buy large amounts of bacta to fight the spread of the virus.

Kirtan Loor, in "Wedge's Gamble", was charged with preventing the Rebels from taking Coruscant before it had been properly infected. The Rogues helped take Coruscant a week before Isard wanted them to, and their strategy involved destroying a water reservoir. Isard had been using the water supply to spread the virus, so destroying the reservoir drastically slowed the spread of the virus. As a result, the virus did not do as much damage as Isard had hoped it would, and it never managed to escape Imperial Center.
2. Who was on trial for treason and the murder of Corran Horn during "The Krytos Trap"?

Answer: Tycho Celchu

Tycho Celchu had been under a lot of scrutiny since the beginning of the "X-Wing" series, and a lot of circumstantial evidence piled up against him during the capture of Imperial Center and Corran's presumed death.

He had been captured by Imperial forces while on a covert scouting mission to Imperial Center a year before the events in "The Krytos Trap". He was sent to Lusankya, a facility known for turning out brainwashed Imperial sleeper agents. After his escape from Imperial custody, many people had misgivings about him. Only Wedge remained convinced that Tycho was not an Imperial agent.

Tycho saved the Rogues numerous times, often flying unarmed shuttles or having some similar disadvantage, and was instrumental in capturing Imperial Center. Despite this, the prosecution just claimed those actions were part of an elaborate and convincing ruse. The prosecutor was Halla Ettyk, who was, like Tycho, from Alderaan.

Nawara Ven was a twi'lek pilot in Rogue Squadron, and former lawyer. He became Tycho's lawyer for the trial, while still attempting to participate in his squadron's assignments. All of Rogue Squadron was convinced of Tycho's innocence, and were treated as hostile witnesses.

Kirtan Loor was an Imperial Intelligence Officer, and once liaised with CorSec while Corran Horn and Iella Wessiri worked there. Corran and Kirtan strongly disliked each other. Corran was convinced that he saw Tycho talking to Loor in a bar while on Imperial Center, before the Rebels captured it. Corran told Wedge this, and even told Tycho, promising to reveal the spy in Rogue Squadron. Tycho said he had nothing to fear because he was not the spy. It was Corran's promise and the circumstantial evidence that surrounded it that greatly hurt Tycho's case.

Tycho admitted to being in the bar that Corran saw him in, but insisted that he was talking to a duros named Lai Nootka about acquiring starfighter parts for the squadron.

Lai Nootka was never found, but Kirtan Loor, after realising that he would be killed by his Imperial colleagues, decided to defect to the Rebel Alliance. He offered to testify that he had never met Tycho. He also offered the location of all Imperial cells still on Coruscant in exchange for credits, a new identity, and safe passage off of Coruscant.
3. While most of Corran Horn's friends thought he was dead, he was actually captured and held in Lusankya. Which of the following was Lusankya NOT?

Answer: A facility on Kessel

The first Super Star Destroyer made was Darth Vader's personal ship, the Executor. Curiously, though, two separate shipyards claimed to make it. The Fondor shipyards made the Executor, while the the ship built at Kuat turned out to be the Lusankya.

The Lusankya was moved to Coruscant, where it was buried, and hastily hidden by buildings above it. There it became Isard's personal prison, where she broke captured Rebels, turning them into agents that could be activated at any time to carry out tasks for her. Most people did not know anything about Lusankya, and many that did just called it a legend. Those that did believe its existence did not know where it was.

Prisoners that could not be converted were sent to the general population, where they mined rocks into gravel as make-work. Corran was given two rounds in a flight simulator, but refused both times to fire on X-wings bearing the Rogue Squadron crest. He was then interrogated (tortured) by Isard before being thrown into the maximum security part of the general prison.
4. There was an Imperial mole in Rogue Squadron since its recreation in the first book ("Rogue Squadron"). In "The Krytos Trap" we finally learned who the mole was. Who was the Imperial spy in Rogue Squadron?

Answer: Erisi Dlarit

Corran first figured out who the mole was while in Lusankya, but was unable to tell anyone. Wedge also figured out who the mole was during the Lusankya's escape. Both men ended up telling General Cracken at the same time. Cracken was the head of New Republic Intelligence, and was indirectly Isard's rival.

Erisi Dlarit was from Thyferra, the location of 95% of the galaxy's bacta production and distribution. These operations were owned and run by two companies, Xucphra and Zeltin. While there was once fierce competition in the bacta market, the Empire destroyed all the other companies, and let the remaining two have a monopoly. Thyferra did its best to stay neutral during the civil war so they could sell bacta to both sides.

When Rogue Squadron was remade, it was filled with people from a variety of different home planets to appease the current and potential members of the Rebel Alliance. Two pilots came from Thyferra: Erisi Dlarit and Bror Jace. They came from different companies so it would not appear as if the Alliance was playing favorites.

Because the bacta cartels were set up and maintained by the Empire, Erisi did her best to protect her family, which worked for Xucphra. When Bror Jace traveled back to Thyferra to see his dying uncle, Erisi relayed his flight plans to the Empire. As a result, the Interdictor Black Asp was able to intercept and destroy him.

Erisi was the only person other than Tycho to check over Corran's Z-95 Headhunter before he flew it during the capture of Imperial Center. She was able to relay its codes to Isard, letting her take remote control of the ship. Everyone saw Corran disappear into the surface of Imperial Center in the middle of a storm, and presumed he died. In actuality, he was flown to Lusankya. They deactivated his inertial compensators, and the extreme centripetal forces caused him to black out.

Erisi also told Isard about the secret bacta convoy that the Rogues were to rendezvous with at Alderaan, well ahead of when Kirtan Loor intended to let Isard know. Part of her motivation was that Mirax Terrik was leading the convoy. Even though Erisi had betrayed Corran, she had been vying for his affections against Mirax. Seeing Mirax "win" the competition, Erisi became petty and vengeful, even though Mirax thought Corran was dead.

Erisi was fine with letting Tycho take the heat as the suspected mole in Rogue Squadron. This false sense of security was actually planned by General Cracken.

Rhysati Ynr was Erisi's wing, but was unaware of Erisi's true affiliation. Gavin Darklighter was a young and naive pilot in Rogue Squadron, but also one of the most talented.
5. Bacta was the miracle healing agent used throughout the galaxy. It could help repair almost any tissues, and help fight any disease. What ingredients were used to create bacta?

Answer: Alazhi and Kavam

Bacta was a healing agent that could help many different species heal a variety of injuries, including trauma and disease. Luke Skywalker was seen floating in a tank of bacta in "The Empire Strikes Back" after he was rescued by Han Solo on Hoth.

Bacta was made by the native species on Thyferra, the Vratix. The selling and shipping of bacta was handled by human-dominated corporations that became very wealthy. The number of humans on Thyferra amounted to only about ten thousand, but they controlled the entire economy of the planet.

The Vratix took great pride in their work, and enjoyed creating bacta. When humans first came and created the bacta industry, they were happy because they got to practice their trade even more.

The Vratix worked in groups called Verachin, which shared a hive-mind, in the most limited sense.

The Vratix combined alazhi and kavam to make bacta. Kavam was a compound made from other sources, while alazhi was a plant grown primarily on Thyferra. A number of factors, including rain, temperature, and soil composition could affect the grade of the alazhi, and in turn, the quality of the bacta made from it.

Ashern was the name of a group of Vratix that had become irritated with the human control of their world. Erisi called the Ashern group "terrorists". Kolto was the name of another healing agent in the "Star Wars" universe. It appeared primarily in "Knights of the Old Republic" and "The Old Republic" video games, which took place three thousand years before the "Star Wars" movies. Bacta was superior to kolto, and kolto was mostly replaced by the newer healing agent. Kor was a designation given to ryll. Ryll kor was the most potent form of ryll.
6. New Republic Intelligence was working around the clock to find a cure for Krytos. They were working in the very same lab that it had been created in. They discovered that a combination of ryll and bacta could be particularly effective. Which planet did the substance ryll come from?

Answer: Ryloth

Qlaern Hirf was a Vratix belonging to the Ashern group that contacted Wedge. Qlaern requested that Wedge present the Ashern's case to the Provisional Council (the ruling body of first the Rebel Alliance, and then the New Republic). Qlaern had already given the New Republic a batch of very good quality, though it was temporarily stolen by Warlord Zsinj. Qlaern offered to help find a cure for the Krytos virus that was ravaging Coruscant.

Qlaern determined that a combination of bacta and ryll created a particularly potent cure. Only the highest grade ryll, ryll kor, was useful. Ryll came from Ryloth, and the native twi'leks usually only sold the lowest grades to offworlders. Rogue Squadron was sent to Ryloth to negotiate a deal. Their exploits, and one of their members also being a twi'lek lawyer, greatly increased their chances.

Ryll kor and bacta were combined to make rylca at the captured Alderaan Biotics facility on Borleias, which the Rogues had liberated in "Rogue Squadron".
7. What did Corran Horn learn while exploring Lusankya?

Answer: That Tycho could not be converted into an Imperial agent.

While in Lusankya, Corran was still convinced that Tycho had betrayed him. His fellow prisoners had told him that Tycho had been with them at one point, which usually indicated that they were unsuitable for conversion, but Corran remained unconvinced.

Corran managed to escape the prisoner's quarters, and while looking around Lusankya, decided to use a holo terminal. He found that the previous user had only deactivated the holo projector (equivalent to a monitor), but had not logged off or powered down the computer.

Corran decided to look up his file, and found a "CStatus: R1", which indicated that he was unsuitable for conversion. He then decided to look up Tycho's file to finally get proof of Tycho's guilt. Instead, Corran found the same rating. Finally accepting that Tycho was innocent, Corran was able to puzzle out who the real mole was.

Lai Nootka was a duros starship captain, and not an alias for Kirtan Loor. Neither Rhysati Ynr nor Nawara Ven were ever Imperial agents in any sense.
8. While Corran Horn was trapped in Lusankya, he threw a rock at the ceiling. Instead of falling, it stuck there. Why?

Answer: Because it was caught by gravity, proving that Corran was upside down.

Corran's first escape attempt was cut short when he was pulled over and beaten by a guard. Corran was stunned in the resulting scuffle, but he did not lose consciousness. He was taken to a medical facility, and was dumped on the ground. While his ear was pressed up against the floor, he heard what sounded like marching on the ceiling on the floor below him.

Once he was back with the other prisoners, Corran theorized that he and his fellow prisoners were all upside down. He had the other prisoners start a riot as a distraction while he threw a rock at the ceiling of the mining cavern, thirty meters away. Rock nestled in and did not fall back.

The prisoners were kept upside down to make escape harder. Anyone in a mine would naturally think that the surface (and freedom) would lie upwards. If they did escape and move "upwards", they would just be moving themselves father away and give the guards more time to realise that someone was missing.
9. Who was the last witness called in the trial?

Answer: Corran Horn

The first witness called in Tycho's trial was Pash Cracken. Pash was the son of General Airen Cracken, head of New Republic Intelligence. Pash did his best to defend Tycho, but was forced to reveal information that hurt the case. The prosecution had decided that all the Rogues would be treated as hostile witnesses.

Wedge Antilles was called as a witness part way through the trial. Despite his convictions of Tycho's innocence, like Pash, he was forced to answer questions that made it sound as though Tycho was guilty.

Kirtan Loor was on his way to the courtroom to be the trial's last witness, and prove Tycho's innocence, but he and his escort were ambushed by one of Isard's agents. Kirtan Loor was killed in the attack.

Most thought that the trial was over, and Tycho was willing to testify himself, without his lawyer around (Nawara Ven had been escorting Kirtan Loor and was injured). However, Corran had escaped Lusankya and realised that he was on Coruscant. Corran, with the help of Whistler, made his way to the courtroom. He was sworn in and was about to explain why Tycho was not guilty when Lusankya distracted everyone by lifting off. It was revealed by Corran and Wedge at the same time that the mole was actually Erisi Dlarit.

Halla Ettyk, the prosecutor, dropped the murder and treason charges against Tycho, and Tycho joined Rogue Squadron as a pilot.
10. How did the spy in Rogue Squadron escape to Imperial forces?

Answer: He/She pretended to be caught in a tractor beam

The Rogues were in the middle of a dogfight on Coruscant when Lusankya began to rise. They were trying to protect a large bacta storage facility from saboteurs, when suddenly a large number of TIE starcraft appeared. As Lusankya was leaving Coruscant, the TIEs turned to dock with the Super Star Destroyer. TIEs did not carry hyperdrives, and would have been stuck if the big ship left without them.

The Rogues chased the TIEs as far as they could while staying out of range of the Lusankya's guns. Wedge eventually called off the Rogues to keep his people alive, but Erisi continued to chase her target. When she finally got her kill, she was too close to the Lusankya, and was "caught in a tractor beam."

After Corran had "died", Wedge had special code installed on the squadron's astromechs. They would relay flight data back to him when requested. Wedge got a feed from Erisi's astromech and saw that the data did not match her story. Wedge was able to determine who the mole in Rogue Squadron was just as she escaped back to her true loyalties.
