Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book "Z for Zachariah" tells of a teenage girl and a man who, as far as they know, are the last people left alive in the world. Is the man actually named Zachariah in the story? (yes/no)

Answer: No

Written by Robert C. O'Brien, who also wrote "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH", "Z for Zachariah" was actually published posthumously after he died leaving it partly written.
It was published in 1974 after his widow and daughter used his notes to complete the manuscript.
The girl in the story is named Ann Burden, and the man is John Loomis. The title features in the book when Ann is thinking over their desperate situation and thinks "As Adam was the first man on Earth, so this must be Zachariah, the last".
2. Mark Tufo's episodic serial "The Book of Riley" is set in the same world as his "White Flag of the Dead" series. The story tells us how Riley and Ben-Ben try to keep young Jessie and her baby brother Zachary alive during the zombie apocalypse and its aftermath. Why is Riley unusual?

Answer: Riley is a bulldog

Riley is an American bulldog, and Ben-Ben is a tiny Yorkshire terrier. Although Riley has always despised Ben-Ben and Patches the cat, when their comfortable domestic lives are ended, they all pull together to keep Jessie and baby Zachary safe. The books are written from the point of view of Riley and are an unusual change from ordinary "run of the mill" zombie stories.
3. In "Doctor Who and the Zarbi", by Bill Sutton, which animal do the alien Zarbi most resemble?

Answer: Ants

The evil Zarbi look like giant metallic coloured ants, with huge sharp pincer claws. The Doctor lands on the planet Vortis and is soon fighting to rescue his two captured companions from the clutches of the Zarbi.
One of "The First Doctor" series of books based on the original television series, "Doctor Who and the Zarbi" was first published in paperback in 1979.
4. We first meet Robert A. Heinlein's character Zeb Carter in "The Number of the Beast" as he sweeps the beautiful Deety off her feet. Why do all the males in Zeb's family have the initial Z?

Answer: A clause in an ancestor's will

Zeb tells Deety that he was given a 'Z' name because his grandfather insisted upon it for any of his male descendents who wanted to inherit a share of his large fortune.
As Zeb says "luckily he told us well before he died" as obviously, the various sets of parents needed to know that they must choose a Z name for their sons.
Zeb is originally invited to the party where he and Deety meet because her father gets him mixed up with his cousin, who is also Z. Carter.
"The Number of the Beast" was first published in 1980.
5. In Anne McCaffrey's "Red Star Rising" (entitled "Dragonseye" in the USA) we meet Weyrwoman Zulaya and Weyrleader K'Vin. Which of the Weyrs of Pern do they the lead in the fight against the deadly Thread?

Answer: Telgar

Although "Red Star Rising" was the fourteenth book of the "Dragonriders of Pern" series to be published, in 1996, it is set before some of the others chronologically.
It tells the story of the preparations for the Second Pass of the Red Star and the return of Thread after an interval of some 200+ years.
6. When he was a small boy, Zack Hartley disappeared for over a year, and then returned to his family "changed" in several ways, not the least of which was that he was insane. Now eighteen, Zack finally finds a job, and the title of this book by P S Power tells us how he gets to work; what is it called?

Answer: Shortcuts

Although Zack is technically insane, and has no recollection of where he spent the missing months of his life, he is also desperate to function as "normally" as he can. Tired of living on his only friend's sofa, he is thrilled when he actually finds a job that he thinks he can do and not be sacked from within a week.
The "Shortcuts" of the title are sort of tunnels or astral paths connecting places, and supernatural beings can use them to move instantly around the world. Zack turns out to be able to travel almost effortlessly through them, and soon discovers this is a very valuable skill...
"Shortcuts", book one of the "Other Places" series, was first published in 2012, and is set in the same universe as Powers' "Mistress of Souls" series.
7. What is the "Z" name of the being with two heads and three arms, who steals the spaceship Heart of Gold in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series? (______ Beeblebrox)

Answer: Zaphod

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" was originally written as a radio play, by Douglas Adams, in 1978. It has since been published in book form and made into television series and films.
Although they are referred to as a trilogy, there are actually six books in the "Hitchhiker's Guide" series. The first five were all by Douglas Adams, but after he passed away, the sixth volume, "And Another Thing..." (2009) was written by Eoin Colfer.
8. In Katharine Kerr's epic "Deverry Sequence" we hear the story of Zaklof the Priest who starves himself to death rather than renounce his faith in his (false) Goddess. Who is this would be Goddess, who causes a war that lasts over fifty years?

Answer: Alshandra

Alshandra is one of the Guardians, spirits who have never been born into ordinary mortal bodies. When her daughter decides to relinquish immortality and be born as one of the Westfolk, Alshandra sets herself up as a Goddess and makes her worshippers wage war on the Westfolk and their allies.
Katharine Kerr's series about Deverry began with "Daggerspell" (1986) and ended with "The Silver Mage" (2009), much to the relief of the fans who had been waiting patiently all those years to find out what happened in the end!
9. In Storm Constantine's "Wraeththu Chronicles" we learn how Calanthe betrayed his beloved Zackala and left him behind to be killed while he escaped alone. What word do the Wraeththu use to describe a couple who are "soul mates" and deeply in love with each other?

Answer: Chesna

When a couple declare themselves to be "chesna" or "chesnari" it is the deepest commitment they can possibly make, and many pairs cement their relationship in a blood bond where they actually exchange blood with each other.
The fact that Calanthe could actually leave his chesnari behind to what seemed like a certain death, while he fled to save his own skin, marks him out as "damaged" emotionally.
We do eventually find out that Zackala survived, and the couple meet again years later and Calanthe faces up to what he did.
The three books of the "Chronicles" trilogy were first published between 1987 and 1989.
10. Which of Sherrilyn Kenyon's "Dark Hunter" series tells the story of Zarek, who was once a Roman slave?

Answer: Dance With the Devil

Zarek's story was the third of the popular "Dark Hunter" novels, and was first published in 2003.
The Dark Hunters are warriors who, after being killed by someone they loved who betrayed them, cry out to the Goddess Artemis for vengeance. She has the power to take their souls into her keeping, and grant them immortality and various supernatural powers, which they must then use in her service, to protect humanity from various demons and evil doers who would prey on it.
