Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the crooked U.S. Senator, played by actor G.D. Spradlin in "The Godfather: Part II"?

Answer: Pat Geary

It has not been unusual for Nevada politicians to befriend persons of questionable character. At the time of the 1974 release of "The Godfather: Part II", Senators Alan Bible and Howard Cannon and Governor Grant Sawyer were on friendly terms with casino and brothel operators as well as the Teamsters Union.

It has been suggested that the unscrupulous Senator Geary character was based on the real-life Senator Patrick A. McCarran who represented the state of Nevada in the United State Senate from 1933 until 1954.
2. What was the occasion of the Senator's first appearance in "The Godfather: Part II"?

Answer: First Communion party

Numerous photographers' flash bulbs popped as the Senator and his beautiful wife took full advantage of the large gathering at the celebration to publicly accept Michael's donation to a local college. While not dislosing the exact amount of the gift, the Senator characterized it as magnanimous.
3. While addressing a group of people, the Senator mistakenly referred to Michael Corleone's wife by the wrong name. Instead of Kay, what name did the Senator use?

Answer: Pat

Michael's long-suffering and dutiful wife Kay was played by actress Diane Keaton. Not only did the Senator refer to Kay as Pat, but he also butchered the pronunciation of "Vito" and "Corleone".
4. In a private meeting, the Senator was asked by Michael Corleone for his assistance and influence in a business matter. What was the subject matter?

Answer: Gaming license

After moving to Nevada from New York, the Corleone family had acquired control of several casinos. They were having trouble with the state gambling authorities in obtaining a license for another casino and sought the Senator's assistance. The corrupt Senator advised Michael that he intended to 'squeeze' the Corleone family and agreed to help for a bribe of $250,000 plus 5% of the gross revenues of all of the Corleone casinos.
5. As the Senator was leaving the private meeting he admonished Michael Corleone to not contact him directly. What was the name of the contact person that the Senator instructed be used as the go-between?

Answer: Turnbull

After hearing the Senator's demand for a quarter of a million dollars and a percentage of gross revenues, Michael replied that a license fee was only $20,000. The Senator responded by insulting Michael and his family and giving Michael one day to give an answer and instructing him to deal with a man named Turnbull. Michael stated that he would offer the Senator nothing, and that he would like the Senator to personally pay the $20,000 license fee.
6. Later in the film, the Senator found himself in a very compromising situation. Where was he?

Answer: Brothel

The Senator awoke from a drunken blackout to find himself in bed with a bloody prostitute who was handcuffed to the headboard. He admitted to having done it with the woman before, but had no recollection of what had happened. One of Michael Corleone's henchmen was seen washing his hands in an adjoining bathroom, implying the girl's death had been orchestrated to embarrass the Senator.
7. Who flew in by private plane, to help the Senator in his personal crisis?

Answer: Tom

Tom Hagen explained to the Senator that fortunately for him, the brothel was owned by Michael Corleone's brother Fredo and that the girl had no family. It was implied that the Senator's loyalty was obtained by Michael's arranging for the tragedy to be kept quiet.
8. The Senator was among a group of politicians celebrating New Year's Eve in Havana, Cuba. What was the name of the night club singer who caught the Senator's eye?

Answer: Yolanda

The Senator was smitten with the sultry night club singer, whom he referred to as the "Red-headed Yolanda". The lovely songstress was portrayed by the beautiful actress Ivonne Coll, who was 1967's Miss Puerto Rico and competed in the Miss Universe contest.
9. The Senator, along with Michael and Fredo Corleone and others, left the night club for other entertainment. Where did the group go?

Answer: Sex show

Earlier in the evening, Michael had introduced his brother Fredo to Johnny Ola. Fredo acted as if he had never met the man, but later at the sex show exclaimed to the group that he and Ola had previously partied in Havana. Michael then knew that it was his brother who had betrayed him, and Fredo's fate was sealed.
10. While Michael Corleone was testifying before a Senate Committee, the Senator excused himself from the proceeding. What reason did he give?

Answer: He was the chair of another committee that was meeting.

As the Senate subcommittee was about to hear testimony of Michael Corleone's criminal activities, the Senator excused himself, claiming that he had an important meeting of his own committee. Before leaving, he lauded his Italian-American constituents and condemned the stereotyping of them as criminals.
