The men bully David and go so far as to rape Amy. David decides to fight back and the conflict quickly escalates to a bloody and violent climax. The film garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Dramatic Score.

Jon Voight plays a young white teacher named Pat Conroy, who is assigned to teach at a school on an isolated island off the coast of South Carolina, populated mostly by poor African American families. He quickly finds that most of the neglected children are illiterate and have little interest in learning about anything outside their island.

The children know so little of the outside world that they virtually develop their own language, and "Conrack" is their way of saying his name, Conroy. He tries to find a way to get through to the children and educate them with what they will need to know to succeed in life.

"The Gambler" follows a gifted literature professor named Axel Freed (Caan), who is addicted to gambling. The film chronicles his descent into gambling addiction, with his compulsion driving him to borrow money from his girlfriend, his mother, and then a local gangster named Hips, played by Paul Sorvino. Freed's addiction prevents him from simply paying off his debts when he wins, with his wagers becoming larger and more dangerous, to the point that he owes more than he can possibly repay.

Peter Finch plays Howard Beale, the anchor of the network's evening news program, who threatens to commit suicide during a live broadcast, after he is fired due to low ratings. O'Neal plays Oliver Barrett IV, a Harvard Law student who comes from a long line of wealthy and well-respected Harvard alumni. Oliver meets and falls in love with a girl named Jennifer Cavilleri (Ali MacGraw), a working-class student attending Radcliffe College, whom his father disapproves of.

When the couple decides to get married against the wishes of Oliver's father, they are cut off financially from him and they have to struggle to make it on their own. Oliver is able to graduate third in his class and lands a position at a New York law firm, with Jennifer teaching at a private school. Things are going well for the couple until they decide to try to have a child.

After numerous failed attempts to conceive, they consult a physician and are informed that Jennifer is terminally ill and will soon die.

The film garnered seven Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Original Score.
