Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the end of the movie, the character of Paul, played by Sean Penn, explains the eerie meaning of the title, "21 Grams." What does it mean?

Answer: The amount of weight a person loses immediately upon their death

This movie is told in part in flashback sequence, and it is difficult at first to tell what is currently happening, and what has already happened.
2. Why could the hospital not use Christina's blood, after she donated it to Paul?

Answer: She had too many illegal substances in her blood

The doctor told Christina that in her condition she needed to be careful of the way she treated her body. When Christina asked what that meant, she was told she was pregnant.
3. Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, and Benicio Del Toro were all nominated for Academy Awards for their roles in "21 Grams".

Answer: False

Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro were both nominated, but Sean Penn was not nominated for his part in this film. He did, however, get nominated, and won the Oscar, for his role in "Mystic River".
4. What kind of party was Jack's wife having when he told her of the accident?

Answer: a birthday party for Jack

Since Jack was a recovering alcoholic, there was no alcohol at the party. However, Jacks's sister snuck in a beer that she shared with Jack's wife, Marianne.
5. Jack's wife did not want him to turn himself in to the police, but he did so anyway and was sent to prison. When he was released, his wife and minister were waiting for him outside the prison. How did he greet them?

Answer: He did not greet them at all. He walked in the other direction

Jack's wife was so against him turning himself in that she went so far as to wash the blood off of the front of his car, so there would be no evidence. Marianne seemed to be the type of woman who was dedicated to her husband, no matter how he treated her. However, it was obvious that when he did not want to see her after leaving the prison, she was at the end of her rope.
6. Paul Rivers was a man who was in need of a transplant, or he would die. Michael Peck's death allowed him to get this transplant. What organ was it that Paul needed?

Answer: heart

Once Paul received Michael's heart, he still continued to abuse it by smoking. His body eventually rejected the heart, and he died anyway.
7. What was the first symptom that Paul experienced, to let him know that his body was rejecting the heart?

Answer: Vomiting

Paul was in his car following Christina, and all of a sudden he began vomiting on his steering wheel. His doctor told him that this was a sign that the heart was not working in his body, and that he would eventually go in to heart failure if he didn't get another transplant. Paul refused to have another transplant, and decided to live out the rest of his life away from the hospital and treatment.
8. Jack Jordan shot Paul in the hotel room.

Answer: False

Midway through the movie, in a flashback sequence, we see Jack telling the police that he shot Paul. However, when we see it actually happening later on in the movie, we see that Paul shot himself.
9. Paul and his wife Mary were having marital troubles. They had been separated before he got sick, but she came back to take care of him. What did Paul find out about Mary that made him realize that their marriage could not work?

Answer: She had an abortion

Mary and Paul were in her doctor's office when the doctor said that because of her abortion, she might not be able to have children. Paul did not know that his wife had an abortion and was furious. I would think that this was a direct violation of doctor/patient confidentiality, but this was not addressed in the movie.
10. At the end of the movie, just before Paul dies, Christina finds out she is pregnant with his child. This is very ironic for one particular reason. What is the reason?

Answer: Paul's wife had been trying to get pregnant for some time but was unable to

Christina lost everything that was dear to her in her life. First she lost her husband and daughters, and then she lost Paul, with whom she had fallen in love with. I thought it was a fitting end to have her become pregnant so that she could have someone in her life to love after all of the loss and tragedy she suffered.
