Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original book involving a trip to a fantasy land left it unclear where the heroine had 'really' gone, but the 1939 movie famously showed her trip as being a full-colour dream, in stark contrast to the black-and-white reality of Kansas. Which family favourite is this film?

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy and Toto escape their troubles when a twister transports them 'Over the Rainbow' to Oz. Or when Dorothy is knocked unconscious by storm debris and starts to dream - take your pick. The film was nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, but lost to "Gone With the Wind".

While fairly successful at the time of release, the film barely managed to recoup its lavish budget, and was more of a critical than a popular success. Television screenings starting in 1956 led to a dramatically-increased popular awareness of the movie, which is now considered one of the classics of twentieth-century film.
2. Kevin Costner stars in this drama about the power of dreams in shaping our lives. He portrays Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer who hears the phrase "If you build it, he will come" and feels compelled to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield. What is the name of this 1989 hit?

Answer: Field of Dreams

"Field of Dreams" tells the story of a man who pursues his dream, builds a baseball field, then waits to see what happens. While subsequent events help a number of people fulfill their dreams, it is not until the end of the film that the audience realises that the 'he' promised at the start is Ray's estranged father, and that the film is about healing as much as it is about dreaming. "Field of Dreams" was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, but did not win any.
3. Dennis Quaid stars with Max von Sydow in a 1984 film about a government-funded research project involving the use of psychics to enter and manipulate other people's dreams. When he discovers that this power is being used to assassinate the dreamers rather than to free them from nightmares, Quaid's character has to try and save the President. What dreamy movie is this?

Answer: Dreamscape

Alex Gardner (Dennis Quaid) is forced to join Dr Paul Novotny (Max von Sydow) in his project on 'dreamlinking', a technique that allows psychics to project themselves into the dreams of troubled individuals and help them alleviate their nightmares. But the project has been hijacked and turned into a potential way of assassinating the President who is seen by some as a security risk because of his fears regarding a post-apocalyptic world he sees in nightmares.

The President is saved, the bad guy gets what he had planned for the President, and Gardner gets the girl.
4. Claire Cooper (Annette Benning) has visions of her daughter's murderer, a cross-dressing serial killer of children named Vivian Thompson (Robert Downey, Jr.), and tries to prevent his next attack. In which 1999 film with a Roy Orbison song playing during the titles does this occur?

Answer: In Dreams

"In Dreams" shows how Claire's life falls apart after her daughter's brutal murder. Her visions of the killer are seen as signs of psychotic delusions, and she is institutionalised, escaping to try and prevent yet another murder after she has a vision of Thompson kidnapping another little girl.

The Roy Orbison song "In Dreams" plays during the credits. The film was not a critical success, and is perhaps best remembered as the last film Robert Downey, Jr. completed before spending time in Corcoran State Prison on drug charges.
5. 'Tevye's Dream' is a song in which the Russian milkman Tevye pretends to have wakened from a nightmare, which he describes so that his wife Golde can interpret it. Of course, he has carefully fabricated the details so as to manipulate the outcome. In which 1971 movie, adapted from a stage musical of the same name, is this scene seen?

Answer: Fiddler on the Roof

"Fiddler on the Roof" tells the story of the family of Tevye, a milkman in the Jewish village of Anatevka in Tsarist Russia, set in 1905. His daughters' marriages form the focal point of the the balance between tradition and new ways which lies at the heart of the movie. Just before the scene with 'Tevye's Dream', his oldest daughter Tzeitel convinces Tevye to let her marry her childhood sweetheart, the tailor Motel, rather than the elderly, but wealthy, butcher Lazar Wolf with whom a marriage has been arranged through Yente the matchmaker. To get Tzeitel out of the agreement without losing face, Tevye resorts to pretending to have had a dream portending dire consequences should the wedding go ahead. Golde then agrees to the change, and the plot moves on to the other daughters.
6. Harrison Ford stars in a 1982 science fiction film whose scipt was based loosely on the Philip K. Dick novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". What is the name of this film, in which retired police officer Rick Deckard is in pursuit of 'replicants' who have come to Earth illegally?

Answer: Blade Runner

"Blade Runner" is set in a dystopian Los Angeles in the year 2019, when genetically engineered entities called 'replicants' have been banned from Earth after an uprising and sent to work on off-world sites. When they sneak back, they are hunted down by police assassins known as 'blade runners'. Harrison Ford's character, Rick Deckard, is allocated the task of 'retiring' four replicants who have come to earth in an attempt to extend their artificially-imposed four-year life span.

In the novel, the character comes to wonder whether he is human or replicant, but that issue is played down in the film's original release, which does show a replicant who has had false memories implanted so that she thinks she is human, and with whom Deckard becomes romantically involved. "Blade Runner" has been described as a leading example of the film genre neo-noir, due to its inclusion of a femme fatale and a hero of questionable moral outlook, its use of shadowy cinematography and its references to a range of themes found in other works of film and literature.
7. In this 2009 fantasy film, 'The Patient' is forced to relive painful dreams as part of his treatment. What is the name of this film, and also the name of the mind-expanding drug which is being tested experimentally on 'The Patient'?

Answer: Psychotropica

In "Psychotropica", 'The Patient' is forced to relive his most painful dreams on a daily basis, under the supervision of 'The Doctor', who bolsters the effect of the dream recall sessions by the use of the experimental drug psychotropica. The film leaps around in time, leaving the audience uncertain what is real, what is hallucination, and what is something in-between as we join the voyage through the subconscious mind of 'The Patient'.

The movie's tagline was "It will blow your mind".
8. One of Federico Fellini's films uses flashbacks and dreams to show film director Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroainni) as he struggles to overcome 'director's block' and complete his latest film. Of which masterpiece is this a description?

Answer: 8 1/2

The title of "8 1/2" was a reference to the fact that Fellini had previously (as of 1963) completed 6 feature films, 2 shorts, and a collaboration with Alberto Lattuada - 6 plus three halves totaled 7 1/2 , making the next one number 8 1/2. Fellini was heavily influenced by the writings of Carl Jung, and worked a number of Jung's ideas (especially archetypes and the collective unconscious) into his films.
9. Johnny Depp's feature film debut saw him playing Glen Lantz, one of a group of teenagers who will be killed in their dreams if they fall asleep, resulting in their death in reality. What is the title of this 1984 slasher film from director Wes Craven, the first in a series?

Answer: A Nightmare on Elm Street

All four of these titles are classics of the slasher genre, but it is "A Nightmare on Elm street" in which Freddy Krueger kills teenagers both in their dreams and in reality, raising the question of how to distinguish between the two. It has been followed by a number of sequels, a television series, and a 2010 remake, as well as a number of other spin-offs, including a parody episode of "The Simpsons". Robert Englund played Freddy Krueger; Nick Castle brought us Michael Myers in "Halloween" (1978); Ari Lehman created Jason Voorhees in "Friday the 13th" (1980); Gunnar Hansen portrayed Leatherface in "The Texas Cahinsaw Massacre" (1974).
10. One of the most famous cartoon dream sequences featured Mickey Mouse in an adaptation of Goethe's poem "Der Zauberlehrling". What is the name of this sequence in the 1940 Walt Disney classic "Fantasia"?

Answer: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

"Fantasia" was an ambitious collection of short films set to classical music, which is considered by many to have established animation as an art form, not just a diversion. In "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", Mickey is an ambitious but lazy apprentice to the wizard Yen Sid (anagram of Disney) who tries to use the wizard's hat to accomplish magic feats of which he is not yet capable.

After creating a magic broom and setting it to work on his chores, he falls asleep and dreams that he is an all-powerful wizard, then awakes to find the room in a state of chaos and the broom totally out of control.

He is ultimately rescued by the wizard. The music for the sequence was written by Paul Dukas in 1897, and was performed for the movie by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Leopold Stokowski, who is seen in silhouette shaking hands with Mickey after the music ends.
