Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the master of the house? It is also the Latin word for 'old man'.

Answer: Senex

It is clear that Senex is scared of his wife, Domina. He isn't free to make his own decisions. Every time he tries to get a look at Marcus Lycus's girls, Domina sharply brings him back. He breaks the nose of her bust on their way to Domina's mother, so he can go back to the girls. Senex is played by Michael Hordern.
2. Which one of the slaves is corpulent and clever?

Answer: Pseudolus

Pseudolus is played by Zero Mostel. The character is very cunning. He tricks people when gambling. He is very convincing! He puts up a good act when pretending to be Marcus Lycus.

Hysterium, on the other hand, is Domina's 'good slave'. He takes Domina's orders to heart.
3. Whose only son and daughter had been taken by pirates? Hint: He is practically blind.

Answer: Erronious

To keep Senex away from his house for a while, Pseudolus tells him to take a bath in Erronious's house, since he is away trying to find his children. Unfortunately, Erronious comes back that day. He hears Senex singing in the bath, and thinks it's a spirit.
Psuedolus comes to him in the form of a sooth-sayer. He finds out that Erronious's children each have a ring on their finger, with at least seven geese engraved on it. Pseudolus tells him to run around the Seven Hills, seven times, and the ghost will go away (plus he will find his children).
4. What is the name of the Syrian captain who has bought the virgin slave?

Answer: Miles Gloriosus

In the end, we find out that Miles Gloriosus and Philia (the virgin slave) are actually brother and sister, the only children of Erronious.

Miles Gloriosus is played by Leon Greene.
5. What is the name of the virgin slave who Hero is in love with?

Answer: Philia

Philia is a good slave. Since she has been sold to Miles Gloriosus, she is determined to go with him, even though she likes Hero. Then, after she realizes that he had destroyed her country, she doesn't want to go.

Here is one of Pseudolus's funny quotes I remember from the movie. He is describing Philia to Miles Gloriosus.

"A face so fair, a heart so pure; Sir, if you had been born a woman, you would have been she!"
6. Why didn't Philia want to go with the captain, once she saw him?

Answer: He destroyed her country, Thrace, three times.

Miles Gloriousus sang a song called 'Bring Me My Bride'. He said that if his bride was not brought to him, he would burn down Marcus Lycus's house (this was when he thought Pseudolus was Marcus Lycus). Pseudolus was trying to stall as much as he could. On top of that, Philia wanted to go with him. Then after she saw him, she realized that he was the captain who had destroyed her country.
Here's the funny dialogue:

Philia: That's the brute that raped my country, Thrace!
Pseudolus: He raped Thrace?
Philia: Then he came and did it again! And then again!
Pseudolus: He raped Thrace thrice?
7. What ingredient did Pseudolus tell Hero to get for Hysterium's sleeping potion?

Answer: mare's sweat

Hero got the sweat in a cup, but someone along the way took it and drank it without asking, and he fell down, unconscious, immediately. Later, he got some more sweat, but his father mistook it for passion fruit potion, and he fell down, unconscious, immediately after also. Guess it was a pretty strong sleeping potion!
8. Who played the part of Hero?

Answer: Michael Crawford

Erronious was played by Buster Keaton. Pseudolus was played by Zero Mostel, and Marcus Lycus was played by Phil Silvers.

Michael Crawford played the White Rabbit in the 1972 reproduction of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. He also played Michael Tremayne in the 1967 movie 'The Jokers'.
9. Who played the part of Philia?

Answer: Annette Andre

Helen Funai played Tintabula, the slave-girl with the bells. Patricia Jessel played Domina, and Jennifer Baker played one of the twin slaves.

Annette Andre was born on June 24, 1939, in Sydney, Australia. She played Sarah Alexander in the British T.V. series 'Crossroads'. The show ran for 4510 episodes!
10. What was the name of the body snatcher?

Answer: Gusto

Pseudolus needed a dead body so he could tell Miles Gloriousus that Philia was dead, so Hysterium suggested that he get one from Gusto the Body Snatcher. Pseudolus told him that Gusto died yesterday. Hysterium asked, "What about HIS body?"
And Pseudolus replied, "Someone snatched it."

This movie was directed by Richard Lester. It won an Oscar for best music, and it was nominated for best motion picture in the Music/Comedy category.
