Question 1 of 10
1. You're not planning to rent anything, but you decide to browse through the titles. You never knew they could fill a whole store up with movies like this! The polite gentleman behind the counter offers you a latte while you shop, but you have some coffee already and courteously decline. Let's look around. The first tape you pick up stars Stephen Caffrey, Patrick Cassidy and the actor who was Oscar nominated for his role in it. Besides the coffee, what film is in your hands? (Oh, my gosh, you realize! This is a store geared for gay and lesbian themes! But you are open minded about things.) Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The next film you glance at is a bit of an oldie. It's based on a play by Lillian Hellman and concerns two schoolteachers accused of a lesbian relationship by a rather horribly bratty student. "Mean little kid," you think as you read the blurb. One of the teachers hangs themselves at the end. Which movie is this? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Your next stop is at another movie made in the 60's, about a fellow struggling to deal with his fierce resignation that he is really not homosexual. It came out in 1968. And, yikes! Frank Sinatra is in it! What's the film? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Two snickering chums enter the store, just when you thought you were alone in here. They want to see the "dirty videos." "This store does not deal in pornography," the manager says. "You're in the wrong neighborhood." The young men leave in a huff. Good riddance. The next shelf in the store has Susan Sarandon's face on it! You're thinking "Bull Durham" or "Atlantic City"---in which movie, tinged in gay themes, did she participate in 1983? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. This next film you pick up has that girl from "Friends" in it. She plays an unexpectedly pregnant lady who hooks up with a roommate who proves to be a great companion and a potentially perfect father. Problem is, he likes other guys. Maybe a good stand-in Dad, but not exactly a love match for her. Which film have you got? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The next film you notice is another one from the 60s (1968, to be exact). Anne Heywood and Sandy Dennis play rather hibernative lovers and then a seaman washes up on shore where they live. Not good news for him! You look at the clerk, whose opinion you have now come to value about his wares. He shakes his head. "That one is a bummer", he says. What movie did you quickly put back on the shelf? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Ah, the next cassette you notice, you remember hearing about. It broke some new ground in 1970. It's about a birthday party with a group of gay friends who do nothing but verbally assault each other and pass a few jokes in along the way. You remember an old friend saying to you about this one: "Joan Rivers would have fit right in!" Which movie are you looking at? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The next one that catches your eye is called "Personal Best," made in 1982. The story sounds fascinating, since it deals with a sport. Which sport is that? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. And then, a few racks down, yet another movie with a gay male lead and a pregnant friend. But this time, he is a drag queen and she is schizophrenic. It was made in Canada. What's that film you are looking at? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Now you're surprised! Who in this film or what does the film have to do with being gay? It's one of your favorites, though. Always has been AND you like this store so you sign up and rent it. The manager gives you his discount because you seem like a nice person, too. You take home the film "Some Like It Hot"; one of the belly laugh final lines in it was? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
But you are open minded about things.)

Answer: Longtime Companion

Bruce Davison was Oscar nominated for this film in 1990, in the Best Supporting Actor category. The movie was about a group of new and old friendships, all being affected by the disease AIDS in their lives. One of the actors in it, Campbell Scott, is the son of the late Colleen Dewhurst and George C. Scott.

The salesperson nods as you look at it and offers, "It's not the cheeriest piece of entertainment, but it's all about the power of friends sticking together."

Answer: The Children's Hour

"The Children's Hour" starred Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine, neither of whose character quite admitted what their sexuality was in the 1962 film. It was originally filmed as "These Three" in 1936, with Merle Oberon and Miriam Hopkins. Exactly what was going on was even murkier back then.

The smiling guy at the register says, "That one is about betrayal and gossip. Pretty good movies, both."
3. Your next stop is at another movie made in the 60's, about a fellow struggling to deal with his fierce resignation that he is really not homosexual. It came out in 1968. And, yikes! Frank Sinatra is in it! What's the film?

Answer: The Detective

William Windom is the "bad" guy in this one. He struggles terribly, but eventually commits a terrible crime as he goes. Jacqueline Bissett had one of her first roles in this film. You wonder as you look at it: "Do all gay people end up murderers or crazy?" "No," the merchant assures you, "they do not."

Answer: The Hunger

"The Hunger" really had to do more with vampires. David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve were more worried about blood than they were gender. "Rocky Horror", made in 1975, had all kinds of unusual stuff in it and "Thelma and Louise", in 1991, didn't clarify the nature of the two leads beyond an intense friendship.

Answer: The Object Of My Affection

Jennifer Aniston plays the soon-to-be mother in this serio-comedy. Paul Rudd plays her roommate who loves her, but "just not in that way." "That's a nice one," the store employee says, "it's about loyalty and trust."

Answer: The Fox

I saw this film once and didn't quite like it. The women seemed neurotic to nearly the point of psychosis and poor Kier Dullea, who played the "visitor," was a "sitting duck" from the start.

Answer: The Boys In The Band

This one was actually not only a controversial movie, but a good one. Such kvetching back and forth, though! Some party! The "party boy" was not thrilled at his landmark occasion, and the "party boys" who gathered to celebrate were less than cordial about any of it. The clerk looks up and wags his finger. "Find a happier one," he says. You decide to look onward.
8. The next one that catches your eye is called "Personal Best," made in 1982. The story sounds fascinating, since it deals with a sport. Which sport is that?

Answer: Track

Mariel Hemingway and Patrice Donnelly play competitors in a track competition. May the best girl win. The film came out in 1982, raised a bit of a stir, then disappeared mostly. The manager, always with his eye on you, smiles. "You might like that one.

It's about competition and not so much about the ladies involved." You puff up. You're just looking for a good movie, not some sort of cheap thrill. You like this manager dude!
9. And then, a few racks down, yet another movie with a gay male lead and a pregnant friend. But this time, he is a drag queen and she is schizophrenic. It was made in Canada. What's that film you are looking at?

Answer: Outrageous!

"Outrageous!" came out in 1977, starring the famous female impersonator Craig Russell. Or at least he was famous back then. Hollis McLaren played his expectant friend. The film was obviously made on a small budget but there is a definite charm to it and the performances, despite the movie's title, were very low-key.

Answer: Well, nobody's perfect!

That one was probably easy. The feeling has returned in your mouth now so you're ready to hail a cab. You say goodbye to the kind merchant and he shakes your hand. "I think I get it now", you say. "It's all about the human condition, isn't it?". He smiles as you dash out into a sudden afternoon downpour. It's been a good day.
