Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the tagline for this film?

Answer: You've got a very important date.

Alice's adventures as a little girl began when she saw the white rabbit running and saying that he was late for 'a very important date'. It also suggests that you should make a date to see the film. I enjoyed this play on words.
2. After Alice has gained entrance to Wonderland again, she learns that a girl called Alice will be called upon to undertake a task on a special day in the near future. What is the name of this special day? (It is a day mentioned in one of Lewis Carroll's poems.)

Answer: Frabjous Day

The expression 'Frabjous Day' comes from Carroll's nonsense poem, "The Jabberwocky". This is the day when Alice is expected to slay the Jabberwocky, a fierce flying creature, somewhat resembling a dragon, which is the evil Red Queen's champion.
3. Where is Alice when she sees the white rabbit, earnestly checking his watch, again?

Answer: Attending her engagement party

Although Alice doesn't know it, she has been brought by her mother to a large garden party, where a very unattractive young lord is planning to propose to her. The engagement party will follow her acceptance.
4. After shrinking and growing, then shrinking again, Alice is able use the little key to get into a large garden. On meeting her, which animal, voiced by Barbara Windsor, insists that she is the wrong Alice?

Answer: The Dormouse

The dormouse is quite sure that Alice is not the right 'Alice' for the task ahead. Alice is taken to Absolom, the Caterpillar, who consults a scroll, while she maintains that she is sure she is not the one that they want. An attack by the Red Knave stops all conversation and the animals flee.
5. Why does Alice think that the Bandersnatch can't hurt her?

Answer: She thinks she is in a dream.

After her first visit to Wonderland as a child Alice, nightly, had frightening dreams about her experiences. Her father always reassured her that the whole thing was just a dream. As a young woman she seems to have grown out of her fear, and when she falls down the rabbit hole she thinks that she is dreaming again and will wake up.

She is badly scratched by the Bandersnatch, but manages to escape.
6. Who offers to heal Alice's wounds?

Answer: The Cheshire Cat

The Cheshire Cat tells Alice that if she doesn't have something pure to heal her wounds they will fester and she will fall ill. She refuses anything more than a light bandage. The wound eventually does fester but, after doing a kindness for the Bandersnatch, he licks her arm and takes away the infection.
7. As when she was a child, Alice goes to a tea party with the Mad Hatter, the Dormouse and the March Hare. Which star of "Pirates of the Caribbean" plays the Mad Hatter?

Answer: Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp was born in Kentucky on 9th June, 1963. He wanted to be a rock musician but this did not work out. It was Nicolas Cage who talked him into being an actor. Depp always relishes a part where he can wear exotic makeup and fancy dress while playing a character of extreme eccentricity. He is perfect for the role.
8. Where does the Mad Hatter hide Alice when the Red Knave turns up with a bloodhound, Bayard, and a pack of red card soldiers?

Answer: In his teapot

The Mad Hatter makes Alice drink some more of the shrinking potion so that she will fit into the teapot. Although the bloodhound, Bayard, senses that she is there, he does not betray her. The dog is being forced to work for the Red Queen, who is holding his wife and children hostage. His real loyalties lie with the White Queen, the Red Queen's good sister.
9. The Mad Hatter tells Alice that she is expected to kill the ultimate weapon of the Red Queen, a vicious beast with incredible claws. With what must Alice kill it?

Answer: The Vorpal Sword

It has been foretold in the scroll, which Absolom consulted, that Alice is the only one who can kill the Jabberwocky with the Vorpal Sword. The Vorpal Sword is the mortal enemy of the Jaberwocky. It was stolen from the White Queen by the Red Knave and hidden in the Red Queen's Castle. Alice recovers it from its hiding place in the Baldersnatch's home and returns it to the White Queen.
10. Why is Alice reluctant to slay this beast?

Answer: She says she can't slay anything.

Alice is a well brought up young woman from Victorian England. She cannot imagine a situation in which she would take the life of another, even if that other were evil.
11. The Tweedles are played by which actor from the UK comedy show, "Little Britain"?

Answer: Matt Lucas

Matt Lucas was born on 5th March, 1974, in Paddington, London. He studied Drama at Bristol University and has constantly been in work. He achieved international fame through his roles in "Little Britain". He will enhance his reputation by his fine performance in this film.
12. The Mad Hatter is captured by the Red Knave and sentenced to be beheaded by the Red Queen. Who helps him to escape as he is about to be executed?

Answer: The Cheshire Cat

The Cheshire Cat comes to visit the Hatter while he is locked up awaiting execution. He asks if he may have the Hatter's hat as he won't be needing it any longer. The Hatter refuses indignantly, saying he wants to be well dressed for his execution. The Hatter walks to the block with his head down and asks whether he may he keep his hat on. The executioner agrees but as the axe comes down the hat flies into the air. The Cat has been wearing it all along!
13. At last the special day arrives and a number of the White Queen's subjects immediately offer to be her champion. Is Alice one of them?

Answer: No

The White Queen tells Alice that only she can succeed in the coming battle, but Alice runs off. In another part of the palace she talks to the caterpillar, Absolom. He tells her that she is 'almost' Alice, not quite as good as the original. The implication is that the younger Alice had more courage.

She is taken aback by this criticism and at last she realises that her dreams were memories and that she is in a real situation. She returns to the Queen, dressed and ready for battle.
14. What kind of battlefield are the Red and White Armies lined up on?

Answer: Chess board

Although the Red Queen has card soldiers, the White Queen has chess pieces in her army, so perhaps that is why the director chose a chessboard as the field of battle. At first the battle is only between Alice and the Jabberwocky, but when it knocks her sword from her hand, the Hatter intervenes and stabs the giant creature in the tail.

The Red Queen then calls on all her forces to attack and the white soldiers respond.
15. What does the White Queen give Alice to return her to her own world?

Answer: Blood from the dead Champion

After a fierce battle Alice finally defeats the Jabberwocky, by cutting off its head. The White Queen gathers some purple blood coming from the dead creature's mouth into a little phial and gives it to Alice. Although the Hatter asks her to stay, Alice decides to return to her own world and drinks the blood.
