Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The only thing that worried me was the actual killing."

Answer: Salieri

Salieri is confessing his plot to kill Mozart to Father Vogler. His plan didn't exactly work out the way he envisioned it. Mozart died before he could finish the funeral mass, and although he didn't physically kill Mozart, Salieri still feels responsible for his death.
2. "I asked you if we could start rehearsals next week, and you said yes."

Answer: Schikaneder

Mozart's friend is pressuring him for the score for the "vaudeville" piece Mozart agreed to write for him. (This "vaudeville" piece turns out to be Mozart's strange opera "The Magic Flute.") Mozart says that it's done in his head, and that the rest is just "scribbling and bibbling."
3. "You monster! No one exists but you, do they?"

Answer: Frau Weber

Mozart's mother-in-law is taking him to task for neglecting Constanze, his wife. It actually turns into a funny scene, with the mother-in-law screeching hysterically at him, which inspires his next opera.
4. "I see you brought your manager with you."

Answer: Schikaneder

When Schikaneder proposes that Mozart write an opera for his theatre group, Constanze asks him how much he will pay Mozart for it. Schikaneder responds with this line.
5. "Would you like me to drag you around Europe, doing tricks like a circus freak?"

Answer: Salieri's father

A young Salieri tries to impress upon his father how important music is to him, but his father is very unimpressed by Mozart and music in general. He views Mozart as a freak, while young Salieri recognizes him for the genius he is.
6. "A young man trying to impress beyond his abilities."

Answer: Count Orsini-Rosenberg

The Count is constantly belittling Mozart and his music. During a discussion with the Emperor about Mozart, Baron Van Swieten mentions a Mozart opera and describes it as brilliant, to which Orsini-Rosenberg responds with a scathing criticism that includes this line.
7. "Gentlemen, please. A little less enthusiasm, I beg you."

Answer: Emperor Joseph

The Emperor modestly downplays the enthusiastic response he receives from his advisors after he plays the welcome march that Salieri composed in honor of Mozart's arrival in Vienna. Mozart himself would have never said something so modest! Salieri would have said it, but not meant it.
8. "Do you really think that subject is quite appropriate for a national theatre?"

Answer: Baron Van Swieten

When the Emperor commissions an opera from Mozart, Mozart suggests a libretto that is set in a brothel in Turkey. The idea is strongly opposed by the Emperor's advisors, even Van Swieten, one of Mozart's supporters.
9. "My hairdresser said that everything this year is going to be Turkish."

Answer: Madame Cavalieri

Madame Cavalieri arrives for her singing lessons with Salieri, decked out in a garish Turkish outfit that Salieri finds very amusing. Rumors of Mozart's new opera have already begun to leak out in the musical community in Vienna, and the ambitious and aggressive Cavalieri is determined to claim a leading role in the production.
10. "My dear fellow, there are in fact only so many notes an ear can hear in the course of an evening."

Answer: Emperor Joseph

The Emperor is trying to explain a deficiency in Mozart's new opera, but can't seem to find the right words. Orsini-Rosenberg suggests that it has "too many notes," an explanation the Emperor then seizes upon and attempts to defend.
11. "Your son is an unprincipled, spoiled, conceited brat!"

Answer: Archbishop Colloredo

Mozart's father is trying to convince the Archbishop to re-hire Mozart, and the Archbishop is furiously opposed to the idea at first. After a bit of grovelling, the Archbishop gives Leopold permission to attempt to talk Amadeus back into employment with him. Unknown to him, however, Mozart has already married against his father's wishes, and does not wish to work for the Archbishop again.
12. "You're not the only composer in Vienna."

Answer: Chamberlain Strack

Mozart is livid that he must submit copies of his work to compete with other composers for the royal appointment to teach the Emperor's niece. When told he isn't the only composer in Vienna, he responds in his characteristically arrogant manner by saying, "No, but I'm the best!"
13. "The poor man can't concentrate for more than an hour. You gave him four."

Answer: Salieri

Mozart complains to Salieri when his opera "The Marriage of Figaro" is withdrawn from the national theatre after only nine performances. This is in large part due to the fact that the Emperor yawned while attending a performance of it, and Salieri is trying to explain to Mozart why the Emperor didn't like it.
14. "All men are equal in God's eyes."

Answer: Father Vogler

This is the Father's unsatisfying response to Salieri's unhappiness over the lack of musical talent God gave him. Salieri attacks this response with a vengeance, detailing at length how God had indeed made himself and Mozart quite unequally.
15. "Please, please. It's not a holy relic."

Answer: Emperor Joseph

When Mozart arrives in Vienna and meets the Emperor, he kneels before him and kisses his hand, to which the Emperor responds with this funny line. Salieri also utters this line to Mozart near the end of the movie, when Mozart kisses his hand in thanks for what he thought was Salieri's influence in having the ballet portion of his opera restored by the Emperor.
