Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Halloween" (1978), what was Michael Myer's motivation to go on a killing spree?

Answer: It was not revealed.

The reasons behind Michael's homicidal wrath were never explained in the movie. After 15 years of observation, psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis may have summed it up the best way possible: "I met him fifteen years ago; I was told there was nothing left, no reason, no conscience, no understanding, or even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, of good or evil, right or wrong. I met this six-year-old child, with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and the blackest eyes... the devil's eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up because I realized that what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... evil." This could very well have been the most terrifying aspect of the movie.
2. Who was Ghostface in "Scream" (1996)?

Answer: Billy and Stuart

Billy's father, Hank had an affair with Sydney's mom, Maureen, a year before the events of the film. Billy's father convinced him to kill Maureen because she was the reason his mother had left them both. Obviously twisted, Billy couldn't seem to differentiate between fantasy and reality.

It was implied that he used peer pressure to pull Stu into the mayhem. Poor Stuart, he was just trying to make friends, not kill people. Many common slasher tropes were visited in this film. It managed to spoof as well as pay homage to many beloved horror movies.

It was a nice balance that revitalized the slasher flick.
3. In "Hellraiser" (1987) who said this, "Oh, no tears please. It's a waste of good suffering!"?

Answer: Pinhead

Pinhead loved suffering, especially inflicting it upon others. He was a chilling character indeed. He was talking to Kirsty Cotton after she solved the puzzle box. She had no idea what horrors she had unleashed. Be careful what you play with kids!
4. Hannibal Lecter was apprehended at the end of "Silence of the Lambs" (1991).

Answer: False

Don't cross Hannibal Lecter, or Clarice Starling. He will make you pay for it, and he might try your liver with a nice Chianti and some fava beans. (slurp slurp).

The final scene showed Dr. Lecter, in somewhat of a disguise, calling Clarice to let her know he wouldn't be coming after her. "The world is more interesting with you in it." Besides, he had more important things to do. He was "having an old friend over for dinner."
5. In "Aliens" (1986) why did Ripley not want Bishop on the mission?

Answer: He was an android.

Ripley had a bad time with androids in "Alien" (1979). After her initial repulsion to Bishop, she soon learned that was a valuable member of the team. Always go with the 341-B model, you can trust them. And, as Bishop himself put it, "I may be synthetic, but I'm not stupid."
6. In "28 Days Later" (2002) which virus was used as a delivery system for The Rage virus or, more simply, The Virus?

Answer: Ebola

It was a simple chemical experiment on monkeys to discover the neurochemical causes of anger and aggression. Unfortunately, when the AFF broke in to set the monkeys free, it was obviously not going to end well. Clive explained how the virus was introduced after he quit the project. Understandably he was upset.
The infection spread at a rapid pace, and soon all of Britain, if not the world, was infected. The fast moving, extremely angry infected were certainly terrifying!
This film may not, technically, be a zombie movie. However, there is no doubt that it helped to revive the genre.
7. What film was Sam Raimi's feature film directorial debut?

Answer: The Evil Dead

"The Gift" (2000) was a nice psychological thriller, but filmed 19 years after "Evil Dead".
"Darkman" (1990) was an overlooked super hero movie.
"It's Murder!"(1977) was a short, and a funny one at that.
Hence, "The Evil Dead" (1981) was Raimi's first foray into feature length film directing. Made on the less than a shoestring budget of around $375,000, the movie has made millions of dollars, and has become a cult classic.

It followed the unfortunate story of Ash, just a guy trying to have a party in a cabin. "The Book of the Dead" was found and read and, one by one, Ash's friends were possessed. Luckily, the evil tree didn't target Ash! Long live the Fake Shemps!
8. In "An American Werewolf in London" (1981), what was the unfortunate name of the pub that David and Jack visited in the village?

Answer: The Slaughtered Lamb

The pair did not receive a warm welcome in The Slaughtered Lamb. David and Jack did not stay in the pub long, but the patrons there were nice enough to warn them to stay on the road, and not venture into the moors. It's too bad that the fog was so thick that our intrepid adventurers could no longer see the road.

After a werewolf attacked the duo, David woke up in a London hospital. Jack didn't make it through the attack, but he still showed up to give David advice after death.

This was a well-made flick, with great special effects for the time - a horror-comedy that all werewolf fanatics should see.
9. In "Dead Alive" (1992) ("Braindead" was the original title in New Zealand), what creature infected Lionel's mother, Vera?

Answer: Sumatran Rat-Monkey

Lionel Cosgrove's domineering mother, Vera, was spying on him at the zoo with his new lady friend. Unfortunately, she ventured too close to the rat-monkey's cage in the process. She eventually succumbed to her injury and passed away. That was when the real carnage began. Vera was a zombie. She began infecting other people and animals. Lionel, still trying to take care of his mother, finally decided that he must put an end to it all. It had to be hard for a mamma's boy to turn against his mommy.

One of the goriest films of the time, Peter Jackson went all out with this one. Most will have mixed feelings about the lawnmower scene.
10. Who was Regan's Ouija Board friend in "The Exorcist" (1973)?

Answer: Captain Howdy

Regan, a precocious 12-year old offered to show her mother Chis how to play with the Ouiga board. She attempted to introduce Chris to her friend, Captain Howdy. Chris asked who Captain Howdy was. Regan replied, "You know, I make the questions and he does the answers." Captain Howdy apparently wasn't in a talkative mood that night, as the planchette slid across the board away from Chris, and Regan could not get Captain Howdy to answer any questions.

Regan began to display frightening and erratic behavior, and a psychiatrist was called in to see if he could determine what was causing it. Under hypnosis, Regan confided in the doctor that she felt that sometimes someone was inside her. He asked if it was Captain Howdy, and she said she didn't know. When the psychiatrist attempted to speak directly to whomever was inside Regan, she attacked him. After that, Chris was convinced to call in the aid of two priests, Father Merrin and Father Karras.

Captain Howdy was not referenced any further in the film, as it became apparent to the priests that a demon had possessed Regan. The rest of the movie was a disturbing and terrifying journey as the two priests attempted to get rid of the demon and save her, and themselves.
