Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 2003 movie, "Open Range", Robert Duvall (Boss) purchased some candy before the final shoot-out. What kind of candy did he buy?

Answer: Dark chocolate bars

Chocolate contains antioxidents which can aid in cardiovascular health. Some researchers believe dark chocolate contains more antioxidants than milk chocolate.
2. In 1994's, "Pulp Fiction", Vincent (John Travolta) ate pancakes in the final scene. What was the side item he offered Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) a taste of?

Answer: Bacon

"You're probably familiar with the phrase "bring home the bacon." In the twelfth century, a church in the English town of Dunmow promised a side of bacon to any married man who could swear before the congregation and God that he had not quarreled with his wife for a year and a day.

A husband who could bring home the bacon was held in high esteem by the community for his forebearance." - from http://homecooking.about.com/library/weekly/aa082701a.htm
3. In "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier", (1989) Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) cooked a meal over a camp fire. He said the receipe was handed down to him. What did he cook?

Answer: Beans

"Beans have been an important part of the human diet for thousands of years. In fact, the Bible makes reference to bean consumption, and beans have even been found in pre-Columbian tombs and the Egyptian pyramids. It's been said that the Egyptians had temples dedicated to beans, worshipping them as a symbol of life." - from http://www.centralbean.com/Story_of_Beans.html
4. In 1999's "The Green Mile" John Coffey (Micheal Clarke Duncan)'s last meal consisted of meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy, okra and some _________ specially made by Paul (Tom Hanks)'s wife.

Answer: cornbread

Cornbread as we know it today was invented by the earliest European settlers in America. Due to its simplicity, it may have been consumed by ancient people, who grew corn as a staple.
5. In "Pink Floyd The Wall" (1982) Pink (as a boy) came home from school one day and fixed himself a sandwich. What kind of sandwich did he prepare?

Answer: Peanut butter and jelly

The pairing of bread and jelly have been around since the two were invented hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago. Peanut butter was invented in 1890. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches didn't become trendy until after the second World War. American soldiers' rations included peanut butter and jelly.
6. In 1992's "Bram Stoker's Dracula" Gary Oldman (Dracula) seduced Mina (Wynonna Rider) with a potent cocktail. What was it?

Answer: Absinthe

Absinthe has a bad reputation in many Western countries and is currently banned in many of them. In its purest form, absinthe contains about 75% alcohol and small amounts of thujone (a hallucinogin similar to THC found in marijuana). Absinthe was said to cause delirium, suicidal tendancies, and overall madness.
7. In 1991's "Silence of the Lambs", Dr. Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) had previously assaulted a nurse and eaten one of her body parts. What part of her anatomy did he consume?

Answer: Tongue

Beef tongue is common for some households. Receipes can include: Corned Tongue, Tongue with Brussel Sprouts, Tongue with Lentils, or Boiled Calves' Tongues.
8. In 1994's "Forrest Gump" what was Forrest (Tom Hanks)'s favorite soda?

Answer: Dr. Pepper

Dr. Pepper was invented in 1885 by Charles Alderton in Waco, Texas. He worked in a pharmacy with a soda fountain. His boss named the soft drink after a friend, Dr. Charles Pepper. The period in "Dr." was dropped in the 1950's.
9. In the concert film, "Bill Cosby, Himself" (1983) we are told of the Cosby children. Bill said he was forced (by his wife) to fix breakfast for his children. What did he serve them?

Answer: Chocolate cake

Modern cakes have been around since humans learned how to make flour. The most well known chocolate cake is the German Chocolate Cake, which is not German at all. The first known recipe was published in 1957 in a Dallas, Texas newspaper. It was called "German's Chocolate Cake" because the brand of chocolate bars used was 'German's'.
10. In 1991's "The Fisher King" we saw all the main characters out on a double date. They ate Chinese food. What item did Anne and Lydia (Mercedes Ruehl and Amanda Plummer) love the most?

Answer: Steamed dumplings

Steamed dumplings are apart of a dining custom referred to as 'dim sum', which means "to touch your heart". These appetizers (usually served with hot tea) began on the famed Silk Road in China. Dim sum is a meal in itself, with several items offered in courses.

It is believed by some culinary historians that the 19th century Chinese immigrants inspired 'brunch' in America; dim sum is traditionally offered in mid-morning or lunch hours, thus combining breakfast and lunch into one meal.
