Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these stories was NOT featured in the Japanese film "Kwaidan"?

Answer: The Samurai

1964's "Kwaidan" is one of my favorite anthology films. It is visually stunning. The sound effects and score add to the surreal atmosphere of each story. "The Black Hair" tells the story of a man who leaves real love in pursuit of money and suffers a horrifying consequence when he returns to his wife. "Woman of the Snow" is a story about a man who pays the ultimate price for breaking a promise. "Hoichi the Earless" is about a blind musician who tries to protect himself from ghosts but forgets two things, hence the title of the story. "In a Cup of Tea" is the final segment in "Kwaidan" and tells the story of a samurai whose visions manifest in a cup of tea.
2. Which story in the horror anthology "Asylum" is about a man whose wife seeks revenge despite her physical state?

Answer: Frozen Fear

In "Frozen Fear" a man's wife comes back to life, piece by piece, and goes after her husband and his lover. "The Weird Tailor" is a story about a tailor who is asked to make a suit that has magical qualities in its fabric. "Lucy Comes to Stay" tells the story of a special relationship between one of the asylum patients and her frequent visitor. "Mannikins of Horror" was the final story in this popular film and it features quite the malicious doll. Let me just say the laugh from the doctor at the end of this movie is truly insane! "Asylum" is a British film from 1972.

It is also known as "House of Crazies".
3. Does the Vault Keeper serve as host to the five people whose nightmares are depicted in "Vault of Horror"?

Answer: No

There is no Vault Keeper in "Vault of Horror". Each story is told by five strangers gathered in the basement of a London office. After the stories are shared, the strangers are left to a morbid fate. The stories included are "Midnight Mess", "The Neat Job", "This Trick'll Kill You", "Bargain in Death", and "Drawn and Quartered".

The first story, "Midnight Mess", finds a man amidst a restaurant full of hungry vampires. "The Neat Job" is about a woman who grows tired of her husband's complaints about her housekeeping and takes action to end it. "This Trick'll Kill You" shows what happens to a couple who steal an Indian magic trick. The fourth story, "Bargain in Death", is about an insurance scam that goes awry for a con artist. "Drawn and Quartered" is about a painter who gets revenge on art dealers who took advantage of his talent.

"Vault of Horror" was released in 1973 by Amicus productions and features stories from "E C comic series", "Tales from the Crypt" and "Shock SupsenStories".
4. What is the name of the Tennessee town where the movie "From a Whisper to a Scream" takes place?

Answer: Oldfield

"From a Whisper to a Scream" tells the story of a reporter who goes to see the librarian of a town called Oldfield, Tennessee. She has witnessed the execution of his niece and is covering the story. She goes to Oldfield for more information and meets Julian White who is played by horror movie icon Vincent Price. He tells her Oldfield has a "foundation of human suffering" and hands her a journal that chronicles the town's evil history. The first story is about a grocery clerk who tries to date his boss and the outcome is deadly. The second story is about a man on the run from gangsters. He meets a practitioner of black magic and discovers an excruciating meaning of everlasting life. In the third story a woman falls in love with a glass-eating carnival performer, but the jealous owner of the circus finds out and gets revenge by adding her to the sideshow. The final story is about lawless war soldiers who stumble across a group of parentless children who answer to "the magistrate" and make them prisoners.

"From a Whisper to a Scream" is also known as "Offspring" and was released in 1987.
5. Which of the following subjects is NOT featured in "Dead of Night"?

Answer: Fishing trip

There is no story about a fishing trip in "Dead of Night". The movie tells the story of a man who attends a party where the guests are all people he has seen in a dream. In the hearse driver segment, a race car driver predicts a bus crash resulting in death.

In the haunter mirror segment, a man looks into a mirror and keeps seeing himself in another dimension and he becomes obsessed with the mirror. The ventriloquist dummy segment deals with a man who thinks his dummy is alive. There is another story in "Dead of Night" that is about two golfing buddies competing for the affection of a woman with results that are both ghastly and comical.

A few of the stories in "Dead of Night" have clearly inspired later horror movies or film shorts, especially the ventriloquist dummy and the haunted mirror.
6. What was the name of the character Stephen King played in "Creepshow"?

Answer: Jordy Verrill

Stephen King played the dim-witted Jordy Verrill who is overtaken by alien plant life in the film's second story, "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill". There were five stories animatedly presented by The Creep in 1982's "Creepshow". George Romero directed the movie whose screenplay was written by Stephen King. Stories include a vengeful patriarch seeking his Father's Day cake, wild weeds from outer space, two lovers' watery revenge, an ancient creature contained in a crate, and an infestation of cockroaches.
7. Which story in the Asian horror trilogy "Three Extremes" is about how far an aging actress will go to maintain her youthful appearance?

Answer: Dumplings

"Dumplings" is an "extreme" tale of what lengths a woman will go to achieve lasting youth and beauty. Afraid of losing her husband's love, an actress seeks the services of a woman who makes dumplings that have a unique quality. At first the dumplings are working, but the effects are drastic after continued use. This story was directed by Fruit Chan of Hong Kong and is probably the most unsettling in its theme.

Each of the directors of "Three Extremes" came from three countries. "Cut" was directed by Chan-Woo Park of Korea and is about a film director and his wife who are being held captive by a deranged extra from one of his movies. "Box" was directed by Japan's Takashi Miike and is a haunting story about a writer who keeps having recurring dreams about her twin sister. "Sphere" is not a story that is part of this film. "Three Extremes" is the sequel to "Three" which came out in 2002. The first film featured lesser known directors.
8. Which story in "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie" starred actress Rae Dawn Chong?

Answer: Lover's Vow

Rae Dawn Chong played Carola, a character based on a story told in the Japanese horror film "Kwaidan". In both stories, a man's life is spared if he promises not tell the circumstance of his ordeal. If the promise is broken, the consequence is not a good one.

"Lot 249" tells the story of a reanimated mummy terrorizing students on a college campus. "Cat from Hell" follows the trail of a vengeful feline. "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie" was released in 1990.
9. What two actors were singing to the song "Midnight Special" during the opening scene of "Twilight Zone: The Movie"?

Answer: Albert Brooks and Dan Aykroyd

The opening scene introduces Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks driving along a dark, lonely highway and playing a game of naming TV show theme songs. Aykroyd is famous for being an original "Saturday Night Live" cast member. He also acted in the movies "Blues Brothers" and "Ghostbusters", and appears at the end of the "Twilight Zone" movie as an ambulance driver in the final segment. Albert Brooks is a comedian and actor who has voiced characters on "The Simpsons" and also directed several short films for "Saturday Night Live". Unlike Aykroyd, Albert Brooks does not appear again in the "Twilight Zone" movie.

"Twilight Zone: The Movie" features three remakes of original "Twilight Zone" episodes and one original story. "Kick the Can", "It's a Good Life" and "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" are the stories featured in the film. Burgess Meredith served as narrator of the stories. Meredith starred in several of the original "Twilight Zone" episodes, one of which is the iconic "Time Enough at Last".
10. In the 1964 horror anthology film "Black Sabbath", which story involves a nurse that steals a ring from the finger of a deceased woman she is preparing for burial?

Answer: The Drop of Water

"The Drop of Water" is the final story in "Black Sabbath". This segment has probably one of the creepiest looking corpses in movie history. A nurse steals a ring from a corpse she is preparing for burial, and is later haunted by it as the sound of water dripping persists until the ring is reclaimed. The ring owner, Madame Perkins, is no joke. Watch this if you dare.

The two other stories in this film cover harassing phone calls in "The Telephone" and relative vampires in "The Wurdalak". "The Ring" is not a story in this particular film. "Black Sabbath" is hosted by the legendary Boris Karloff.
