Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain" tells of a disaster that occurred in the city of Bhopal in 1984. In what nation is Bhopal?

Answer: India

Bhopal, nicknamed "City of Lakes", is the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The disaster in Bhopal in 1984 is estimated to have killed more than 20,000 people.
2. At which company's chemical plant did the disaster in "Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain" occur?

Answer: Union Carbide

Union Carbide became a subsidiary of Dow Chemical Company in 2001. Unfortunately the Bhopal disaster was not the first catastrophic accident for Union Carbide. Between 1927 and 1932 workers creating a tunnel for Union Carbide were exposed to silica dust causing more than 400 deaths.
3. What patriarch of an acting family played the part of Warren Anderson, the Chief Executive Officer of the chemical company responsible for the leak in "Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain"?

Answer: Martin Sheen

Martin Sheen is actually the stage name of Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez. Some of Martin Sheen's notable roles include Josiah Bartlett in "The West Wing" and Robert E. Lee in "Gettysburg". Shortly after the Bhopal tragedy Warren Anderson returned to the United States. The government of India unsuccessfully attempted to extradite him to stand trial.
4. A cab driver gives Eva critical reasons as to why the chemical company chose Bhopal as the site for its operations. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: No taxes on profits earned in India

The film also shows that Union Carbide personnel used monetary bribes to obtain favors from the local government. Interestingly these bribes came after the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977 that specifically prohibits U.S. multinational firms from engaging in such conduct. Subsidizing certain industries is a way that some countries attract foreign investment and promote economic development.
5. Prior to the leak several chemical plant workers had died from exposure to a toxic substance. One of the workers asks his supervisor if they are safe. How does the supervisor respond?

Answer: Wanna keep your job?

The workers at the Union Carbide plant knew about the dangers of working with such toxic chemicals. Unfortunately, in a poor economic area like Bhopal people are compelled to take any job they can in spite of the risks.
6. What acronym was used to describe the deadly toxin that was leaked in "Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain"?

Answer: MIC

Methyl isocyanate (MIC) is a chemical compound that is primarily used for insecticides. At the Union Carbide plant Tank 610 contained more than the allowable limit of MIC. When water breached the tank a reaction occurred that caused a breach in the tank and the expelling of toxic gas.
7. Eva was able to dig up information about the chemical plant and its hazardous impacts on Bhopal by confronting its CEO Warren Anderson. What nationality was Eva and what was her profession?

Answer: She was an American journalist.

The fictitious character Eva Gascon was played by Mischa Barton. Mischa was born in London but also spent time in Ireland and the United States. She was one of the main characters in the television series "The O.C." and had a small role in "The Sixth Sense".
8. What type of event are Dilip and his family attending when they fall victim to the toxic gas that leaked from the chemical plant?

Answer: A wedding

Dilip's sister's wedding was a joyous time for his family that ended tragically for those involved. The terror felt by the people realizing that they have been exposed to toxic fumes is very difficult to watch.
9. The director of "Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain" actually grew up near the site of the Bhopal disaster. What native son directed the film "A Prayer for Rain"?

Answer: Ravi Kumar

Although Rami Kumar was born in India, he attended film school in the United States and also lived in the United Kingdom. When Kumar returned home to India he realized that the younger generation did not know about the tragedy that occurred in Bhopal in 1984.

Interestingly "Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain" is one of the first movies about the disaster despite being released almost 30 years later.
10. Why did the inhabitants of Bhopal pray for rain after the chemical leak?

Answer: Rain would have reduced the number of fatalities.

Sadly rather than there being rain in Bhopal after the leak the conditions were windy which contributed to the spread of the poisonous gases. Rain would have helped neutralize the potency and dissipate the MIC that was released.
